Amused

Chapter 5: The Video I Was Never Supposed To See

The scream coming from Vanessa’s phone froze the entire room.

Not because it was loud.

Because I recognized the voice.

Even after three years.

Even after time had tried to bury the memories.

I knew that voice.

Lily’s mother.

Emma.

The woman I once loved.

The woman I believed had walked away from us.

The woman my daughter still asked about before going to sleep.

I stared at the phone screen.

A dark room appeared.

The video was shaky, like whoever recorded it had been moving quickly.

For a few seconds, there was only noise.

A door closing.

Heavy breathing.

Then Emma’s voice.

“Vanessa, what are you doing?””

My eyes moved toward my wife.

She stood completely still.

No anger.

No explanation.

Just watching.

Like she had watched this video many times before.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Where did you get this video?””

She looked at the phone.

Then back at me.

“I told you. There are things you don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

I pointed at the screen.

“Play it.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then pressed the screen.

The video continued.

Emma’s voice became clearer.

“You’re scaring Lily.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at my daughter.

She was sitting on the couch, holding her blanket.

She didn’t know what was happening.

She only knew adults were talking about her.

Vanessa noticed me looking at Lily.

“You need to hear everything.””

I looked back at the phone.

The video showed only a small part of a living room.

But I recognized it.

It was Emma’s old apartment.

The place where she and Lily had lived before everything changed.

Emma’s voice shook.

“Why are you here?””

Vanessa answered.

Her voice was younger.

But I recognized it immediately.

Cold.

Controlled.

“You need to stop making things difficult.””

My stomach tightened.

Emma laughed nervously.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you need to accept reality.””

“What reality?””

“That Michael has moved on.””

I froze.

The words felt strange.

Because at that time, I hadn’t moved on.

I had been desperately trying to save my relationship with Emma.

Trying to convince her to get help.

Trying to understand why she had become distant.

Vanessa continued in the video.

“He deserves someone stable.””

Emma’s voice rose.

“You’re talking about him like he’s yours.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“Maybe he should be.””

I felt the room tilt.

Mason looked at me.

He heard it too.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Michael—”

“Don’t.””

I didn’t take my eyes off the screen.

The video continued.

Emma sounded angry now.

“You’re insane.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“No. I’m realistic.””

“You came here to threaten me?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I came here to give you a chance.””

“A chance to do what?””

“To leave.””

My hands curled into fists.

Emma’s voice became quiet.

“And if I don’t?””

The video went silent for several seconds.

Then Vanessa answered.

“You’ll regret it.””

Lily suddenly covered her ears.

“Daddy.””

I immediately stopped.

I looked at her.

“It’s okay.””

“No.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I don’t like it.””

I turned the phone away.

“You don’t have to listen.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“See?””

Her voice was almost pleading.

“She remembers.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mason?””

The boy looked nervous.

“What?””

“You knew about this?””

He shook his head quickly.

“Not the video.””

“Then what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She told me Lily’s mom was dangerous.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“A long time ago.””

“And you believed her?””

Mason looked down.

“I was little.””

The words hurt.

Because he was still little.

All this time, both children had been trapped in a world created by adults.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“Why did you show me this?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Because you needed to know Emma wasn’t innocent.””

I looked at her.

“Then why hide it?””

She didn’t respond.

“Why tell me she left?””

“Because she did.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You said she wasn’t ready to be a mother.””

“She wasn’t.””

“Did she abandon Lily?””

Vanessa looked away.

That pause was everything.

I stepped closer.

“Did she?””

Her silence answered.

“No.””

The word came out broken.

“No, she didn’t.””

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

“She was unstable.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

“She made dangerous choices.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“Did Emma leave Lily willingly?””

Vanessa stared at me.

Finally, she whispered:

“No.””

The truth landed harder than I expected.

Because part of me had prepared for lies.

I had not prepared for confirmation.

My daughter’s mother didn’t leave.

She was taken from our lives.

I sat down slowly.

My mind was racing through every memory.

The last conversation with Emma.

The final phone call.

The message saying she needed space.

The letter I found afterward.

The one saying she was sorry.

I had thought she wrote it because she didn’t want us.

But what if she had written it because she was afraid?

“What happened after this video?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked nervous.

“I don’t remember.””

I laughed quietly.

“You don’t remember?””

“It was years ago.””

“You recorded her.””

Her face changed.

“I recorded it because I wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That she was unstable.””

I stared at her.

“You came into her home.””

“She attacked me.””

“You threatened her.””

“She threatened me.””

“Where is she?””

Vanessa went silent.

Again.

And that silence was becoming unbearable.

“Where is Emma?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I haven’t seen her since that night.””

“But you know what happened.””

“No.””

Her answer was too fast.

I looked at her.

She corrected herself.

“I know what she did.””

“What did she do?””

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

Then lowered her voice.

“She tried to take Lily and run.””

My heart stopped.

“Run where?””

“Away.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Because she thought I was going to take Lily from her.””

I looked around.

At the locked pantry.

The hidden box.

The pictures.

The fear.

And something didn’t add up.

If Emma had been the dangerous one…

Why did my daughter act afraid of Vanessa?

Why did Mason?

“Why does Lily fear you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Why does your own son look terrified when you speak?””

Still nothing.

I stepped closer.

“You keep showing me pieces of the story.””

I pointed at the phone.

“Only the pieces that make you look innocent.””

Her face hardened.

“You think I’m a monster.””

“I think you’re hiding something.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Mason suddenly walked toward the table.

“Dad.””

I turned.

He was holding something.

A small envelope.

Where had he gotten it?

“What is that?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“I found it.””

Her expression changed instantly.

“Mason.””

The fear returned.

But this time, it wasn’t fear of being caught.

It was fear of what he was about to reveal.

“Where did you find it?”” I asked.

“In Mom’s closet.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

Mason held it behind his back.

“No.””

“Now.””

“No!””

The shout surprised everyone.

Mason started crying.

“I kept it because I thought maybe someday Dad would believe us.””

My heart tightened.

“Believe what?””

He handed me the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

The ink was faded.

But I knew the handwriting immediately.

Emma.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You had this?””

She looked terrified.

“I can explain.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Only three sentences.

My hands started shaking as I read them.

*Michael, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect Lily.*

I swallowed.

The second sentence made my blood run cold.

*Do not trust Vanessa. She will tell you I left, but I never chose to leave my daughter.*

And the final sentence…

May you like

The final sentence changed everything.

*The reason I disappeared is because I found out what Vanessa was planning to do to Lily.*
