Amused

Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Never Gone

For three years, I had imagined what I would say if I ever heard Emma’s voice again.

I imagined anger.

I imagined questions.

I imagined demanding answers for every night Lily cried herself to sleep asking where her mother was.

I imagined asking why she left.

Why she chose silence.

Why she abandoned us.

But when I heard her say, *“I’m alive,”* all those words disappeared.

Because the truth was standing in front of me.

Or rather, speaking through my phone.

Emma had never left.

She had been somewhere.

Waiting.

Hiding.

Surviving.

“Michael,” she whispered.

I couldn’t speak.

My eyes stayed locked on Vanessa.

She stood in the doorway, frozen.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Terrified.

“Where are you?”” I finally asked.

Emma took a shaky breath.

“I can’t tell you yet.””

“Yet?””

“I need to know if you’re alone.””

I looked behind me.

Vanessa was watching every movement I made.

“She’s here.””

There was silence.

Then Emma whispered:

“Michael, hang up.””

“What?””

“Hang up right now.””

Her voice changed.

Urgent.

Afraid.

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa knows I contacted you, she’ll move faster.””

My heart started pounding.

“Move faster with what?””

Another pause.

The kind of pause people make when they’re deciding how much truth they can survive hearing.

Then Emma said:

“With Lily.””

The world went quiet.

I looked toward the living room.

My daughter was sitting beside Mason, wrapped in her blanket.

Safe.

At least for the moment.

“What do you mean?””

“Michael, listen to me.””

Her voice cracked.

“She never wanted you to have Lily.””

I closed my eyes.

“I don’t understand.””

“I tried to tell you.””

“When?””

“Before I disappeared.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You left me a letter.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I wrote you a letter, but I never sent it.””

The cold feeling returned.

“The letter I found?””

“I don’t know what you found.””

I looked at Vanessa.

My wife.

The woman who had been standing beside me while I grieved.

The woman who had comforted me.

The woman who knew exactly what I believed.

“Vanessa gave me a letter.””

Emma went silent.

Then:

“She found it.””

Those three words felt like a knife.

“She found it?””

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw her take it.””

My chest tightened.

“From where?””

“My apartment.””

I looked around the house.

Everything suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The walls.

The furniture.

The memories.

Like I had been living inside a story someone else wrote.

“Emma, tell me everything.””

“I don’t have time.””

“You have three years of my life to explain.””

Silence.

Then softly:

“I know.””

There was pain in her voice.

Real pain.

Not an excuse.

Not a performance.

“I know what I did to you.””

My anger rose.

“You didn’t just hurt me.””

“I know.””

“You hurt Lily.””

“I know.””

“You let her grow up believing you abandoned her.””

A long silence followed.

Then I heard something.

Crying.

Emma was crying.

“I thought I was protecting her.””

I looked away.

“From what?””

“From Vanessa.””

I stared at my wife.

Vanessa noticed.

Her expression changed.

She knew I was hearing something important.

“She threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The week before I disappeared.””

I walked farther from the house.

Away from Vanessa.

Away from the children.

“Tell me.””

Emma took a breath.

“She came to my apartment.””

“Like in the video?””

“No.””

Her voice dropped.

“That wasn’t the first time.””

My stomach turned.

“How many times?””

“Three.””

I felt dizzy.

“She came to me and told me Michael was unhappy.””

“That wasn’t true.””

“I know that now.””

“What did she want?””

“She wanted me to sign papers.””

“What papers?””

“Temporary custody papers.””

I went silent.

“She said if I didn’t sign them, she would make sure you believed I was unstable.””

My jaw tightened.

“How?””

“She had recordings.””

“Of what?””

“Arguments.””

I frowned.

“Arguments?””

“She would come to my apartment, push me until I got angry, then record only my reaction.””

My heart sank.

A pattern.

A plan.

Pieces finally connecting.

“She was building a case.””

“Yes.””

“For custody.””

“Yes.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was no longer standing still.

She was walking toward me.

I stepped away.

“Emma.””

“What?””

“She’s coming closer.””

“Michael, you need to leave.””

“I’m not leaving without answers.””

“You need to leave with Lily.””

The urgency in her voice scared me.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Silence.

Then:

“The night I disappeared…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“What happened?””

“She came to my apartment.””

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“She wasn’t alone.””

My entire body went cold.

“Who was with her?””

“I don’t know his name.””

“Then who?””

“A man.””

“What man?””

“I don’t know.””

Her breathing became shaky.

“He was carrying documents.””

“What documents?””

“Adoption papers.””

The word hit me.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head even though she couldn’t see me.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Vanessa wasn’t even married to me.””

“I know.””

“She couldn’t just take Lily.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because she wasn’t trying to take her legally.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Emma’s voice became barely audible.

“She wanted to make it look like I was the problem.””

I looked toward the house.

Vanessa was now standing near the door.

Watching me.

“Emma.””

“What?””

“Why did you disappear?””

The silence that followed was painful.

Then she answered.

“Because that night, I saw what she was willing to do.””

I waited.

“She told me if I didn’t leave, Lily would be taken away from both of us.””

My throat tightened.

“She threatened Lily?””

“Yes.””

“And you ran?””

“I hid.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought if I disappeared, she would stop.””

I closed my eyes.

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

The pain in her voice was overwhelming.

“She married you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She got closer.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

Emma was quiet.

Then:

“Because every time I got close, Vanessa knew.””

The air left my lungs.

“She was watching me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked around.

Every memory felt suspicious now.

Every coincidence.

Every moment.

“How did you contact me tonight?””

“I found Mason’s old school records.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I knew he might still be near you.””

I looked toward the living room.

Mason.

The boy who had been silently carrying the truth.

“You knew about Mason?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because he was the only person who tried to help Lily.””

My heart broke.

A seven-year-old child had been trying to protect my daughter.

While adults failed.

The phone suddenly crackled.

Emma’s breathing changed.

“Michael.””

“What?””

“You need to leave.””

“Why?””

“Because someone is outside my building.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I think she found me.””

My blood ran cold.

“Emma, where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“You have to.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Listen to me.””

I waited.

“If Vanessa knows I contacted you, she won’t go after me first.””

My stomach tightened.

“She’ll go after Lily.””

Behind me, a floorboard creaked.

I turned.

Vanessa was standing there.

Too close.

“Who are you talking to?””

I stared at her.

My phone was still pressed to my ear.

Emma whispered:

“Michael.””

“What?””

“Don’t let her know you believe me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Who is on the phone?””

I had seconds.

One wrong answer.

One wrong move.

And I knew exactly what Emma meant.

Vanessa wasn’t afraid because I knew the truth.

She was afraid because I finally knew where to look.

I lowered the phone slightly.

And before I could answer, Emma said one final thing:

“Michael… check the security cameras from the night I disappeared.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

Emma’s voice trembled.

“Because the person who helped Vanessa erase me from your life…”

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“…was someone you trusted more than anyone.””
