Chapter 9: The Truth on the Tape

The video played.

And my own voice filled the cabin.

“I can’t do this anymore.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Lily looked at me.

I couldn’t move.

Because I remembered that night.

But not this.

Not the recording.

Marcus watched our reactions carefully.

A predator waiting for the moment his prey understands the trap.

“You see?”” he said quietly.

Ethan looked at him.

“What is this?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He let the video continue.

My younger voice cried.

“I’m not strong enough.””

A pause.

“I’m scared.””

Lily’s eyes filled.

She looked at me.

“Mom?””

I couldn’t explain.

Not yet.

Because I needed to hear it too.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know if I can be a mother.””

My knees almost gave out.

Because those words were real.

I had said them.

But Marcus had removed everything around them.

The reason.

The pain.

The truth.

Ethan looked devastated.

“You said that?””

I whispered:

“Yes.””

His face fell.

“Why?””

I looked at him.

“Because I was breaking.””

Marcus smiled slightly.

“Exactly.””

I turned toward him.

“Stop.””

He ignored me.

“Ethan, your mother wants everyone to believe I stole your sister.””

“You did.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She was struggling. She admitted it herself.””

Lily looked between us.

“Is that true?””

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.””

Her expression changed.

“But not the way he wants you to think.””

I stepped closer.

“That recording was from the worst night of my life.””

Ethan waited.

I had no choice anymore.

“I had just found out Marcus was cheating.””

Silence.

Marcus’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A crack.

“You were pregnant with Lily?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I was trying to save our family.””

Lily stared.

“What happened?””

I swallowed.

“That night, Marcus told me I was a terrible mother.””

Ethan looked at me.

“He said that?””

I nodded.

“He told me Lily would be better without me.””

Marcus scoffed.

“That’s not what happened.””

“It is.””

I looked at him.

“And you recorded me after you pushed me until I broke.””

Evelyn spoke quietly.

“She’s telling the truth.””

Marcus turned.

“You don’t get to speak.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I should have spoken twenty-four years ago.””

That was the first time Marcus looked afraid.

Ethan noticed.

“So the video is fake?””

“Not fake.””

I answered.

“Edited.””

Ethan looked confused.

“How do you know?””

“Because there is a sentence missing.””

I looked at Marcus.

“The sentence right before that.””

Marcus said nothing.

I continued.

“I said, ‘I can’t do this anymore if you keep threatening to take Lily away from me.’”

Lily froze.

Marcus’s expression changed.

Evelyn reached into her bag.

“I have the original.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“What?””

She pulled out a small drive.

“The full recording.””

The room became chaos.

Marcus moved forward.

But Ethan stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

For the first time, Marcus looked at his son.

Really looked.

And maybe he realized.

He had lost him.

Not because of a mistake.

Because of the truth.

Evelyn connected the drive.

The original recording played.

My voice.

Then Marcus’s.

“You know nobody will believe you.””

A pause.

“You’re emotional.””

Another pause.

“You’re unstable.””

Ethan’s face went pale.

Lily covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Marcus said:

“I can make everyone think you left.””

My younger voice cried.

“Why would you do this?””

His answer was quiet.

Cold.

“Because people believe me.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked defeated.

But then he smiled.

A small smile.

A dangerous one.

“You think this changes everything?””

Ethan stared.

“It does.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped back.

“Because you still don’t know the biggest secret.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What now?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at Ethan.

Then at me.

“Your mother didn’t lose Lily because of me.””

A pause.

“She lost Lily because someone else betrayed her.””

Everyone looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn went completely still.

Marcus smiled.

“And she knows exactly who.””

Ethan turned.

“Grandma?””

Evelyn’s face broke.

Because she couldn’t deny it.

Marcus walked toward the door.

“You wanted the truth.””

He looked back.

“Now you have to survive all of it.””

Then he left.

And inside that cabin, with twenty-four years of secrets finally exposed…

Evelyn whispered the words none of us expected.

“I was the one who gave Lily away.””

May you like

Lily stared at her.

“What did you just say?””
