Chapter 8: The Secret Everyone Protected

Nobody knew what to say.

The woman standing in front of us was supposed to be dead.

But she wasn’t.

And somehow, she was apologizing to me.

Not Lily.

Me.

Evelyn.

That was the name Lily whispered after several seconds.

“My grandmother’s name is Evelyn.””

The woman nodded.

“I know.””

Lily stared.

“How?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because I was there.””

The words made the room colder.

“There when what happened?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“When Marcus took Lily.””

Lily’s face changed.

“You knew?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The anger came instantly.

“You knew my whole life I thought my mother abandoned me?””

“I know.””

“No.””

Lily stepped forward.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Her voice cracked.

“You raised me.””

Evelyn cried silently.

“I know.””

“Then how could you?””

“I was scared.””

Lily laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was scared.””

She pointed around the room.

“Everyone except me.””

That sentence broke something.

Because she was right.

Everyone had made decisions for Lily.

Everyone had chosen what she should know.

Except Lily herself.

Ethan moved beside her.

“What happened?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You’re Ethan.””

He nodded.

She looked at me.

“You kept him.””

The words sounded strange.

Almost like admiration.

“Yes.””

She smiled sadly.

“You always were a better mother than people gave you credit for.””

I swallowed.

“Then why did you help Marcus?””

She looked away.

“Because I thought I was protecting Lily.””

The room went silent.

“From what?””

Evelyn sat down.

“From Marcus.””

Lily frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

She took a deep breath.

“Marcus was not the man you thought he was.””

Ethan gave a bitter smile.

“We already know that.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You don’t.””

That frightened me.

Because there was still another layer.

“What else did he do?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Marcus was involved with people who could destroy him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What people?””

She hesitated.

“People who paid him.””

“For what?””

“Information.””

Silence.

Ethan stared.

“You mean he was spying?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Business information. Personal information. Anything valuable.””

I felt sick.

“That’s why he took Lily?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he found out I had evidence.””

Lily looked confused.

“What evidence?””

Evelyn reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a small key.

“I hid it.””

She placed it on the table.

“Because Marcus was looking for it.””

Ethan picked it up.

“A key to what?””

“A safety deposit box.””

I stared.

“What’s inside?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Her voice became quiet.

“That Marcus planned everything.””

Lily covered her mouth.

“All these years…”

Evelyn nodded.

“He created the story that your mother abandoned you.””

She looked at me.

“He convinced people you were unstable.””

My eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You don’t know the worst part.””

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“Marcus had help.””

Ethan immediately looked at her.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked down.

Then she said:

“Someone close to you.””

My heart dropped.

“Who?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then the door behind us opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

A man I recognized immediately.

Marcus.

He looked older.

But the same confidence remained.

The same calm expression.

The same smile.

“Evelyn.””

Her face went pale.

“You found us.””

Marcus stepped inside.

“You really thought you could disappear forever?””

Ethan moved in front of me.

“What are you doing here?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Son.””

Ethan laughed.

“No.””

The word was sharp.

“You don’t get to call me that right now.””

Marcus ignored him.

His eyes moved to Lily.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Lily stared.

“You knew?””

Marcus sighed.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“Protect me?””

Her voice shook.

“You stole my life.””

Marcus looked hurt.

Almost convincing.

Almost.

“I made mistakes.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Mistakes?””

His voice rose.

“You destroyed Mom.””

Marcus looked at me.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She destroyed herself.””

My chest tightened.

Even now.

Even here.

He was still doing it.

Still rewriting reality.

“You always loved being the victim.””

I stared at him.

For years, I wondered if he truly believed his own lies.

Now I knew.

Maybe he did.

Or maybe he was just that good.

Marcus reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a phone.

“I have something you should see.””

Ethan didn’t move.

“What?””

Marcus pressed a button.

A video appeared.

My face appeared on the screen.

My heart stopped.

Because it was me.

Twenty-four years ago.

And I was saying words I had never said.

Words that made Lily gasp.

May you like

Words that made Ethan step back.

Words that made me realize Marcus had been preparing this moment for decades.
