Chapter 5: The Second Disappearance
For twenty-four years, I had carried the weight of losing Lily.
But I had never told anyone about the second time.
Not Ethan.
Not my friends.
Not even myself.
Because some memories are so painful that your mind locks them away.
It convinces you that silence is survival.
But when Marcus said those words, the door opened.
And everything I buried came rushing back.
Ethan stared at me.
“Second time?””
I couldn’t look at him.
“Mom.””
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“Tell me.””
Lily stood completely still.
Her face was unreadable.
“What does he mean?””
I sat down slowly.
Because my legs couldn’t hold me anymore.
“After Marcus took you…”
I looked at Lily.
“I found you once.””
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
Ethan leaned forward.
“You found her?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you bring her home?””
The question destroyed me.
Because I had asked myself that every day.
“I tried.””
Lily stared.
“What happened?””
I closed my eyes.
“I found you in another state.””
The memory came back clearly.
The small apartment.
The peeling paint.
The woman who opened the door.
The little girl hiding behind her legs.
My little girl.
“You were four years old.””
Lily covered her mouth.
“I remember…”
I looked at her.
“You do?””
She nodded slowly.
“I remember a woman crying outside a door.””
My heart shattered.
“That was me.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Why didn’t you take me?””
I couldn’t answer immediately.
Because the truth was complicated.
Because sometimes love wasn’t enough.
“I did take you.””
Lily froze.
“What?””
“I picked you up.””
Ethan stared.
“You never told me this.””
“I know.””
I looked at my son.
“Because I failed.””
The room was silent.
“I picked Lily up and took her with me.””
Lily’s breathing became uneven.
“Then what?””
I looked down at my hands.
“Marcus called the police.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“He called the police?””
I nodded.
“He told them I had kidnapped my own daughter.””
Lily shook her head.
“That’s insane.””
“It was.””
“What happened?””
I swallowed.
“The police took you back.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I remember.””
The words were barely audible.
“I remember someone pulling me away from you.””
My heart stopped.
Because I remembered too.
Her tiny hands reaching for me.
Her screaming.
Her asking why I wouldn’t come with her.
And me promising:
I’ll find you.
I promise.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Lily looked at me.
For the first time, the anger in her eyes softened.
“You didn’t leave me.””
“No.””
“Someone took me.””
“Yes.””
She sat down.
Her entire body shaking.
Ethan looked between us.
“So Marcus lied.””
I nodded.
“He always said I abandoned her.””
Ethan stood and walked away.
He went to the window.
For several seconds, he didn’t say anything.
Then:
“I spent my whole life thinking Dad was the parent who stayed.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“And you were the one who lost everything.””
I looked at him.
“I didn’t want you to hate him.””
He turned around.
“Why?””
“Because you loved him.””
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“You should have let me know who he really was.””
The truth hurt.
But it was true.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
That broke something in him.
Because Ethan understood.
He always had.
He walked toward me.
But before he reached me, Lily’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“Who is it?”” Ethan asked.
She didn’t answer.
She just showed us.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?””
At first, there was only silence.
Then a man’s voice.
“Lily.””
She froze.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You don’t know me.””
Her face went pale.
“But I know exactly who you are.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Put it on speaker.””
She did.
The voice continued.
“I know you found your mother.””
Lily swallowed.
“Who are you?””
The man laughed softly.
“I’m someone who knows what Marcus did.””
My heart started racing.
“Why are you calling?””
The man hesitated.
“Because Marcus is going to destroy your family again.””
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
The voice became quieter.
“It means your father never wanted you gone because he hated you.””
A pause.
“He wanted you gone because you knew something.””
Nobody spoke.
Lily whispered:
“Something about what?””
The man answered:
“About the night Marcus made your mother disappear.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
The call ended.
Ethan looked at me.
“Mom?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because I knew what that meant.
Marcus hadn’t just stolen Lily.
He hadn’t just destroyed my family.
He had been hiding something bigger.
Something that started before either of my children understood the truth.
And the worst part?
May you like
I knew exactly where the answer was.
Hidden inside a box I had never opened in twenty-four years.
