Amused

Chapter 4: The Child I Lost

The handwriting on the back of the photograph was the handwriting I had spent twenty-four years trying to forget.

My fingers trembled as I traced the words.

*She was never supposed to find you.*

Ethan stood beside me, staring at the picture.

Lily stood across from us, waiting.

Waiting for an explanation.

Waiting for the truth.

And I realized something terrifying.

I had spent my entire life afraid of this moment.

Not because I didn’t love Lily.

Because I did.

Every single day.

But because I knew the truth would hurt everyone.

Especially my son.

“Mom?”” Ethan’s voice was quiet.

I looked up.

His eyes weren’t angry anymore.

They were hurt.

A different kind of hurt.

The kind that comes when someone realizes the person they trusted most has been carrying a secret alone.

“Who wrote this?”” he asked.

I looked at Lily.

“I don’t know.””

Lily let out a bitter laugh.

“That’s convenient.””

The words cut deep.

But I understood why she said them.

She had spent years believing a version of my story where I was the villain.

“Lily…”

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I’ve waited my whole life to hear you say my name.””

I froze.

“I have imagined this moment thousands of times.””

She stepped closer.

“I imagined you crying. I imagined you apologizing. I imagined you telling me you never stopped looking.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But you didn’t.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because I had looked.

I had searched.

I had called every number I could find.

I had knocked on doors.

I had spent nights sitting in my car outside places where I thought she might be.

But none of that mattered if she never knew.

“Lily, I did look for you.””

She stared at me.

“Then why did I grow up thinking my mother gave me away?””

The question was so painful I had to look down.

Ethan moved closer.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at Lily.

“Where did you grow up?””

She wiped her face.

“With my grandmother.””

“Your grandmother?””

“Yes.””

“What about your father?””

Lily went silent.

And that silence told us there was another secret.

“My father died when I was young.””

I looked at her.

“Lily…”

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Your father didn’t die.””

Her face changed.

“What did you say?””

The room went still.

Ethan looked at me.

“You know who her father is?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Lily’s voice became sharper.

“Then tell me.””

I looked toward the window.

The rain had started outside.

Small drops tapping against the glass.

A sound that reminded me of another night.

A night twenty-four years earlier.

A night when everything changed.

“Your father was Marcus.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Lily looked confused.

“Marcus?””

I nodded.

“Marcus Walker.””

The name hung in the air.

Ethan stepped back.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

“How?””

I looked at him.

“Because before he was your father…”

I swallowed.

“He was mine.””

Lily stared.

“You mean…”

“Yes.””

Her face turned pale.

“You’re saying Marcus is my father?””

I nodded.

The silence afterward felt endless.

Then Lily laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes people laugh when something hurts too much to process.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s true.””

She shook her head.

“No. My grandmother told me my parents didn’t want me.””

My heart broke.

“Lily, I wanted you.””

“Then why wasn’t I with you?””

I had no answer that would make twenty-four years disappear.

So I told her the truth.

“The night you were taken from me, Marcus said he was taking you to his parents’ house for the weekend.””

Ethan frowned.

“Wait.””

He looked at me.

“Taken?””

I nodded.

“He never brought you back.””

Lily stared.

“What happened?””

I closed my eyes.

“I called him. I went to his parents’ house. I went to the police.””

“And?””

“And Marcus told everyone I left.””

Lily’s expression changed.

“What?””

“He told people I was unstable. That I couldn’t handle being a mother.””

Ethan looked horrified.

“Dad said that?””

I nodded.

“Your father convinced everyone I abandoned you.””

Lily’s eyes filled.

“So you didn’t leave me?””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“I never left you.””

She covered her mouth.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Why didn’t you tell me about him?””

I looked at my son.

“Because I wanted you to have a father.””

He shook his head.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

“No, Mom.””

His eyes filled.

“You protected him.””

I looked down.

And that was the truth I couldn’t escape.

I had protected Marcus.

Not because he deserved it.

Because Ethan deserved a childhood without hatred.

But maybe I had been wrong.

Maybe hiding evil didn’t make it disappear.

It only gave it more time.

Lily slowly walked toward the table.

She picked up the photograph again.

“Who found this?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Who gave you this picture?””

I hesitated.

She noticed.

“Mom.””

That word.

Mom.

The first time she had said it.

Not with anger.

Not with accusation.

Just a question.

“My lawyer.””

Her eyebrows pulled together.

“You have a lawyer?””

I nodded.

“After Marcus left, I spent years trying to find evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

“That he lied.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Then why didn’t you win?””

Because I had lost.

Because people believed the charming man with the successful job and perfect smile.

Because everyone thought a woman like me couldn’t possibly be telling the truth.

“I didn’t have enough proof.””

Lily looked at the photograph.

“But someone did.””

The room went quiet.

Because she was right.

Someone had kept this.

Someone had hidden it.

Someone wanted the truth buried.

And then Ethan’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just turned the phone around.

The caller ID showed one name.

Marcus.

My heart dropped.

Ethan answered.

“Dad?””

The voice on the other end was calm.

Too calm.

“Son.””

Ethan put the phone on speaker.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“I know Lily is there.””

Everyone froze.

Ethan looked at me.

“How?””

Marcus continued.

“And I know your mother finally told you everything.””

Lily stepped forward.

“You knew?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he said something that made my blood turn cold.

“Ethan, before you believe her story…”

A pause.

“You need to ask your mother why Lily disappeared the second time.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Because all three of us understood the same thing.

May you like

There was another secret.

And this one was mine.
