Chapter 9: The Truth That Finally Returned
The warehouse was silent.
General Harris couldn’t move.
Not because of fear.
Because he was trying to understand.
His daughter had spent twelve years hiding.
She had protected Ruby.
She had disappeared.
And now she was saying someone he considered an enemy had saved her.
“Who?”” Harris asked.
Amelia looked at Victor.
Harris immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Victor said nothing.
That frightened him more.
“Victor saved me.””
The words felt impossible.
Harris looked at his former mentor.
“You?””
Victor lowered his eyes.
“For once, I did something right.””
Harris laughed bitterly.
“After everything?””
Amelia stepped forward.
“Dad, listen.””
He looked at her.
“I know what you believe.””
She swallowed.
“You believe Victor was the villain.””
“He was.””
“Yes.””
She paused.
“But he wasn’t the only one.””
Her eyes moved toward Voss.
Colonel Richard Voss remained calm.
Almost too calm.
“He was the one who planned everything.””
Harris stared.
Voss smiled.
“You finally understand.””
The general’s anger exploded.
“You manipulated my daughter.””
Voss shrugged.
“I gave her a choice.””
“You threatened her.””
“I gave her motivation.””
Amelia’s face hardened.
“You told me my father wanted me gone.””
Voss smiled.
“And you believed me.””
The cruelty of his answer made Harris sick.
Amelia continued.
“I was young.””
She looked at her father.
“And I was hurt.””
Harris lowered his eyes.
Because she was right.
She had been vulnerable.
And he had not been there.
Victor stepped forward.
“I tried to tell you.””
Harris looked at him.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“But you disappeared.””
Victor looked away.
“Because Voss had evidence against me too.””
The pieces finally connected.
Everyone had been trapped.
Everyone had been manipulated.
Except the person who caused it.
Voss.
He looked almost amused.
“You know what the funny thing is?””
Nobody answered.
“I never had to destroy this family.””
He smiled.
“They destroyed themselves.””
The words were designed to hurt.
And they did.
But Harris looked at Amelia.
Then at Ruby.
And realized something.
Voss’s greatest weapon had always been shame.
Making people believe they were beyond forgiveness.
Harris stepped forward.
“You’re wrong.””
Voss raised an eyebrow.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
The general’s voice became steady.
“You stole years from us.””
A pause.
“But you don’t get the rest.””
Voss’s expression changed.
Because for the first time, he looked uncertain.
The rescue team moved.
But Voss had expected it.
He grabbed a file from the table.
“Before you arrest me…”
He held it up.
“You should know what Amelia was protecting.””
Harris stared.
“What is that?””
Voss smiled.
“The reason Ruby exists.””
Everyone froze.
Amelia turned pale.
“Don’t.””
Harris looked at his daughter.
“What is he talking about?””
She looked down.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“Someday.””
Voss opened the file.
Inside was a birth record.
Harris saw the name.
Ruby Parker.
Then another name.
Father:
Unknown.
His chest tightened.
“Unknown?””
Amelia closed her eyes.
Voss laughed.
“She never told you because she thought you would hate her.””
Harris looked at Amelia.
“Is that true?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I was scared.””
“Of me?””
She nodded.
Not because she hated him.
Because she didn’t know if he could forgive her.
The general slowly walked toward her.
“Amelia…”
But before he reached her, a gunshot echoed.
Everyone dropped.
The lights went out.
When they returned, Voss was gone.
And so was Ruby.
Harris’s heart stopped.
“Ruby!””
A message appeared on the warehouse screen.
You wanted the truth.
Now come find the final piece.
