Amused

Chapter 8: The Secret in Amelia’s Notebook

The military base had never felt so quiet.

General Harris stood alone in the hallway after the call ended.

Someone had written his name.

Someone had made Ruby believe Amelia was running from him.

But why?

The answer mattered more than anything.

Because if Amelia had truly feared him…

then every memory he had carried for twelve years was wrong.

Ruby sat in the office holding the notebook.

She looked terrified.

An officer beside her carefully took the notebook.

“We shouldn’t read this without the general.””

But Ruby shook her head.

“She wanted him to know.””

When Harris returned, she handed it to him.

“Mom wrote your name.””

He opened the notebook.

The first pages contained ordinary things.

Grocery lists.

School notes.

Drawings.

Then he reached the middle.

And his hands stopped.

April 14.

Dad thinks I left because I hate him.

That isn’t true.

I left because someone used Dad’s name to threaten me.

Harris’s breathing changed.

He read faster.

Victor told me Dad approved everything.

He said Dad knew what was happening.

He said Dad wanted me gone.

“No…”

The word escaped him.

Daniel looked over.

“What?””

Harris handed him the notebook.

Daniel read silently.

Then his face changed.

“He lied.””

Harris looked up.

“Who?””

Daniel turned the page.

At the bottom was another name.

The same person who had convinced Amelia that her father was her enemy.

The same person who had controlled the story.

The name was:

Colonel Richard Voss.

Daniel whispered:

“He was Victor’s second-in-command.””

Harris remembered him.

A quiet officer.

A man who always stood nearby.

A man who never attracted attention.

“How?””

Daniel continued reading.

Amelia had discovered that Voss was using Victor’s operation for his own benefit.

When Victor became suspicious, Voss protected himself.

He needed someone to blame.

So he chose Amelia.

And then he chose Harris.

“He wanted us divided,” Daniel said.

Harris closed the notebook.

“He used my daughter against me.””

“Yes.””

“And he made her think I abandoned her.””

Daniel nodded.

A painful silence followed.

Then Ruby spoke.

“Mom always said people can steal things without touching them.””

Harris looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“She said the worst people steal your memories.””

The sentence stayed with him.

Because Victor and Voss had stolen twelve years.

Twelve years of birthdays.

First steps.

First words.

First days of school.

Moments he would never get back.

A phone rang.

This time, Harris answered immediately.

Victor.

“Did you enjoy the truth?””

Harris’s voice was controlled.

“Where is Amelia?””

“You’re still focused on her.””

“She is my daughter.””

Victor laughed softly.

“She was.””

Harris’s eyes hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“You lost her long before she disappeared.””

The general clenched his jaw.

“What do you want?””

“Ruby.””

“No.””

Victor’s tone changed.

“You always were predictable.””

The call ended.

Then coordinates appeared.

A location.

A message.

Bring the girl.

Harris stared.

Daniel stepped closer.

“He knows.””

“He always knew.””

The rescue plan changed.

But Harris knew something.

Victor didn’t want Ruby because of revenge.

He wanted something else.

Something connected to Amelia.

Something connected to the past.

At the warehouse, they found Amelia.

Alive.

But not alone.

She was sitting beside Victor.

And standing behind her was Colonel Richard Voss.

Harris entered with his weapon lowered.

“Amelia.””

His daughter looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Dad.””

For a moment, twelve years disappeared.

Then Voss smiled.

“Beautiful reunion.””

Harris looked at him.

“You destroyed my family.””

Voss laughed.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You destroyed your family.””

Amelia looked at Harris.

“Dad…”

Her voice broke.

“There’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Ruby isn’t the only secret I kept from you.””

The room went silent.

Harris felt his heart stop.

“What are you saying?””

Amelia looked at Victor.

Then at Voss.

Then back at her father.

“I lied about the night I left.””

A pause.

“I lied about who helped me escape.””

Harris whispered:

“Who?””

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears.

“The person who saved my life…”

May you like

She looked directly at him.

“…was your enemy.””
