Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Secret
Daniel Cross had once been General Harris’s closest friend.
They served together.
They trusted each other.
Until one night changed everything.
Twenty years earlier, Daniel had been accused of leaking military information.
The evidence was never complete.
But the betrayal destroyed their friendship.
Daniel disappeared before the investigation ended.
And now his name had returned.
Attached to Amelia.
Attached to Ruby.
General Harris stood in his office, staring at the documents.
“He paid her rent?””
The officer nodded.
“Yes, sir.””
“Why?””
“We don’t know.””
Ruby sat quietly nearby.
She had been listening.
“Mom knew him.””
General Harris looked at her.
“What?””
Ruby hesitated.
“He used to visit.””
“When?””
“Sometimes.””
“Did your mother trust him?””
Ruby looked uncomfortable.
“She always locked the door after he left.””
The room became silent.
General Harris felt anger rising.
Not at Ruby.
At himself.
How had he not known?
How had his daughter spent eight years raising a child alone while he sat in his office believing she wanted nothing to do with him?
“Did he ever hurt your mother?””
Ruby shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
The general looked at the eviction notice.
Then at the wallet.
Then at Ruby.
Something was wrong.
The wallet had been found near the bus station.
Ruby had been there because she was searching for her mother.
And Daniel Cross’s name appeared exactly when Amelia disappeared.
Too many pieces connected.
That evening, General Harris personally drove Ruby to the apartment building.
The place was old and worn.
The hallway lights flickered.
Ruby stood outside the door.
“That’s home.””
Harris looked at the peeling paint.
His heart sank.
His daughter had lived here.
His granddaughter had slept here.
And he had known nothing.
Ruby unlocked the door.
Inside was almost empty.
A small table.
Two chairs.
A mattress on the floor.
A few books.
On the wall were drawings.
Pictures of a mother and daughter holding hands.
General Harris touched one carefully.
“Did your mother draw these?””
Ruby smiled faintly.
“No.””
“Then who?””
“Me.””
He looked at the drawing.
The family picture had three people.
A mother.
A little girl.
And a man wearing a military uniform.
His throat tightened.
“Who is that?””
Ruby looked away.
“I don’t know.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Both of them froze.
Someone was outside.
The doorknob slowly turned.
General Harris moved instantly, placing himself between Ruby and the door.
The door opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Daniel Cross.
His eyes went directly to Ruby.
Then to Harris.
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“You found her.””
General Harris’s voice became cold.
“What did you do to my daughter?””
Daniel looked down.
And for the first time in twenty years, the man who had never shown fear looked terrified.
“Thomas…”
“Where is Amelia?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was trying to protect her.””
General Harris stepped forward.
“From who?””
Daniel looked at Ruby.
May you like
Then whispered:
“From you.””
