Chapter 6: The Enemy Wearing a Familiar Face

General Harris stared at the message on the screen until the words blurred.

Bring Ruby to me… or Amelia disappears forever.

The command center was silent.

The only sound was the low hum of computers and the distant footsteps of soldiers moving through the hallway.

Nobody wanted to speak first.

Nobody wanted to say what everyone was thinking.

Someone had targeted an eight-year-old girl.

Someone had kidnapped Amelia.

Someone who knew exactly how much Ruby meant.

Daniel Cross slowly stood.

“Who was he?””

General Harris didn’t answer immediately.

His jaw tightened.

His hands curled into fists.

Finally, he said the name.

“Victor Hale.””

The room changed.

The officers nearby exchanged uneasy looks.

They knew that name.

Victor Hale wasn’t just another former military officer.

He was a legend.

A decorated commander.

A man whose speeches had inspired thousands.

A man who had once been General Harris’s mentor.

Daniel stared at him.

“You’re sure?””

Harris nodded.

“I know his face.””

The image from the security footage appeared again.

The figure was blurry.

But the posture.

The walk.

The way he stood behind Amelia like he owned the space around her.

Harris knew.

Because he had spent twenty years watching Victor Hale command rooms.

“I don’t understand,” Daniel whispered.

“He disappeared five years ago.””

Harris looked at him.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“He wanted people to think he disappeared.””

Ruby sat in the corner, listening.

She had been quiet for too long.

Finally, she asked:

“Is that the bad man?””

Everyone turned.

General Harris softened immediately.

“Ruby…”

“Is he the reason Mom told me not to talk to people?””

The question cut deeper than any accusation.

Harris crouched beside her.

“I don’t know yet.””

Ruby looked down.

“But you know him.””

“Yes.””

“Did you trust him?””

The general opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because the honest answer hurt.

“Yes.””

Ruby nodded slowly.

“My mom said sometimes the people who smile the most are the ones who hide the biggest secrets.””

Harris looked away.

Because those words sounded exactly like Amelia.

A memory came rushing back.

A nineteen-year-old Amelia sitting across from him at the dinner table.

“You always think you can tell who the good people are,” she had said.

He had laughed.

“Experience teaches you.””

“No, Dad.””

She had looked at him sadly.

“Sometimes experience just teaches you how to ignore the truth.””

At the time, he thought she was being dramatic.

Now he wondered if she had been trying to warn him.

An officer entered the room.

“General, we found something.””

Harris stood.

“What?””

The officer placed a file on the desk.

“Victor Hale purchased a property under an alias three months ago.””

“Location?””

The officer hesitated.

“A remote cabin outside Blackridge.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Blackridge?””

Harris looked at him.

“You know it?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That’s where Amelia used to go.””

The room went still.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she believed nobody would find her there.””

Harris stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this?””

“Because I promised her.””

The general’s anger rose.

“You promised my daughter while she was hiding my granddaughter from me?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Yes.””

The honesty stopped Harris.

Daniel continued.

“Because Amelia believed you would bring danger to her life.””

“That’s not true.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

He simply said:

“Then why did Victor Hale know exactly where to find her?””

The question landed.

Nobody spoke.

A plan was formed within minutes.

A rescue team would approach the cabin.

But Harris refused to stay behind.

“Sir, this is a tactical operation.””

Harris looked at the officer.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“This is my family.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I’m coming too.””

Harris stared at him.

After everything.

After the secrets.

After the betrayal.

He still needed answers.

“You better hope Amelia forgives you.””

Daniel nodded.

“I hope she forgives both of us.””

Hours later, the vehicles moved through the darkness toward Blackridge.

Ruby stayed behind at the command center with two officers.

Before leaving, Harris had knelt beside her.

“I’ll bring your mother back.””

Ruby had held onto his sleeve.

“Bring her back because she loves you.””

He froze.

“What?””

Ruby looked at him.

“She keeps your picture.””

The general’s breath caught.

“What picture?””

“The one hidden in her drawer.””

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

Ruby whispered:

“She said she was angry with you.””

A pause.

“But she never stopped missing you.””

For the first time in years, General Harris felt something stronger than guilt.

Hope.

But when the rescue team reached Blackridge, hope disappeared.

The cabin was empty.

The door was open.

A single light flickered inside.

On the table was a photograph.

A photograph of Amelia.

A photograph of Ruby.

And a handwritten note.

General Harris picked it up.

The message contained only six words.

“You were never looking in the right place.””

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice spoke.

“Hello, Thomas.””

Harris froze.

Because he recognized the voice.

Victor Hale.

“You found my cabin.””

The general tightened his grip on the phone.

“Where is my daughter?””

A quiet laugh.

“Still asking the wrong question.””

“What do you mean?””

Victor paused.

Then whispered:

“Ask yourself why Amelia was afraid of you.””

The call ended.

And behind General Harris, Daniel stared at the photograph on the table.

Because he noticed something Harris didn’t.

The picture wasn’t taken recently.

It was from twelve years ago.

The day Amelia disappeared.

And written on the back was a message that changed everything.

*I know what really happened that night.*
