Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath The Old Tree
The back door moved slowly in the wind.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
Like someone had just walked through it.
Rachel stared at the opening.
Then at the notebook on the table.
Then at the message from Thomas.
*Rachel, don't believe the notebook.*
Her hands shook.
Everything had become impossible.
Every answer created three more questions.
Every person she trusted had hidden something.
And now she was standing in a funeral home beside her husband's coffin, trying to decide which version of Thomas Clarke was real.
The man who protected his family.
Or the man who left behind evidence accusing himself.
"Mommy.""
Madison's voice pulled her back.
Rachel looked down.
Her daughter was staring at the notebook.
"Don't read it.""
Rachel frowned.
"Why?""
Madison looked scared.
"Because Daddy said paper can lie.""
Everyone became quiet.
Daniel looked at her.
"What did he mean by that?""
Madison hugged herself.
"He said bad people write things down so everyone thinks they are true.""
Rachel looked at the notebook.
Then she understood.
Victor hadn't thrown it there to reveal the truth.
He had thrown it there to create doubt.
To make them question Thomas.
To make them lose time.
Daniel grabbed the notebook and flipped through the pages.
"This is a copy.""
Rachel looked at him.
"How do you know?""
"Because Thomas kept records differently.""
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"He's right.""
Rachel looked at her.
"You knew?""
Evelyn sighed.
"My son didn't trust computers.""
That sounded exactly like Thomas.
She continued.
"He wrote everything by hand. Always.""
Daniel looked at the notebook again.
"This is designed to look like his work.""
Rachel looked toward the open door.
"Then Victor planned this.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he wants us looking in the wrong direction.""
A loud crash came from outside.
Everyone froze.
The sound of a car door.
Then footsteps.
Coming closer.
Rachel grabbed Madison's hand.
"Who is that?""
Nobody answered.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a familiar voice called from outside.
"Rachel?""
She froze.
Because she knew that voice.
Not from the funeral.
Not from the past two days.
From years ago.
Thomas.
No.
Impossible.
The door opened.
A man stood there.
Alive.
Exhausted.
Rain covering his jacket.
Rachel couldn't move.
The world stopped.
For two seconds, nobody said anything.
Then Madison whispered:
"Daddy.""
Thomas looked at her.
And broke.
All the strength disappeared from his face.
He took one step forward.
But stopped.
Like he wasn't sure he deserved to.
Rachel stared at him.
The anger came before the relief.
Before the tears.
Before anything else.
"You.""
Thomas looked down.
"Rachel.""
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the funeral home.
Nobody moved.
Thomas accepted it.
He didn't defend himself.
He just stood there.
Rachel's hand shook.
"You let me bury you.""
"I know.""
"You let Madison think you were gone.""
"I know.""
"You watched us suffer.""
Thomas closed his eyes.
"I know.""
She stepped closer.
"Then why?""
Thomas looked at Madison.
"Because I thought I had no choice.""
Rachel laughed through tears.
"Everyone says that.""
Thomas looked hurt.
"I was wrong.""
The words were quiet.
But real.
"I was wrong to think I could protect you by keeping you in the dark.""
Rachel looked away.
She wanted to hate him.
She wanted to scream.
But he was alive.
The man she loved was standing in front of her.
And that made everything harder.
Madison slowly walked toward him.
Rachel almost stopped her.
But she didn't.
Madison stood in front of Thomas.
"You scared me.""
Thomas dropped to his knees.
"I know.""
"You promised you wouldn't leave.""
Thomas's eyes filled.
"I know.""
"You lied.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
Madison looked at him for a long moment.
Then she hugged him.
Thomas held her like he was afraid she would disappear.
Rachel looked away.
Because that moment hurt.
It was beautiful.
And painful.
Because she had needed that hug too.
After a moment, Thomas stood.
Daniel crossed his arms.
"You finally decided to show up.""
Thomas looked at him.
"I had to make sure they were safe.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You almost destroyed them.""
Thomas accepted that.
"I know.""
Rachel noticed.
Everyone kept saying it.
But Thomas was the first person who actually looked broken by it.
"Tell me everything.""
Thomas nodded.
He looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Then Rachel.
"Victor has been controlling information through the foundation for years.""
Rachel listened.
"I discovered it slowly. At first, I thought he was stealing money.""
"And then?""
"Then I found out he was collecting secrets.""
Rachel frowned.
"About who?""
"Everyone.""
Thomas looked at the notebook.
"Politicians. Business owners. Families.""
"Why?""
"Control.""
Rachel looked at Madison.
"And my daughter?""
Thomas's expression changed.
"Madison saw something important.""
The little girl looked down.
"The red door.""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes.""
Rachel waited.
"What was behind it?""
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
She answered.
"A hidden room.""
Rachel stared.
"Where?""
"At the old farmhouse.""
The place where Thomas had hidden the box.
Evelyn continued.
"Victor used it to store copies of the information he collected.""
Rachel felt sick.
"And Madison saw him there.""
Thomas nodded.
"She saw Victor entering the room.""
Madison whispered:
"With someone else.""
Everyone looked at her.
Rachel knelt.
"Someone else?""
Madison nodded slowly.
"Daddy told me not to say.""
Thomas looked surprised.
"Maddie?""
The little girl looked at him.
"You said I should remember.""
Thomas went silent.
Because he realized.
She remembered more than he expected.
"Who was with him?""
Madison looked at the doorway.
Then at Evelyn.
"I don't know his name.""
Rachel's heart started racing.
"But?""
Madison whispered:
"I remember his face.""
Thomas stepped closer.
"Who?""
Madison pointed.
Not at Victor.
Not at Daniel.
At the notebook.
Specifically at the signature on the bottom of the first page.
A name written in black ink.
Rachel stared.
Because it was a name she knew.
A name that had been in their family for years.
Thomas looked at the page.
His face changed.
"No.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"What?""
Thomas picked up the notebook.
His hands shook.
"This isn't Victor's writing.""
Rachel looked confused.
"But you said it was fake.""
Thomas nodded.
"It is.""
"Then whose is it?""
Thomas stared at the signature.
And whispered:
"The person who created Victor's entire operation.""
Silence.
Rachel looked at him.
"Who?""
Thomas didn't answer.
Because everyone heard it.
A sound from outside.
A car arriving.
Then another.
Then another.
Three vehicles.
Surrounding the funeral home.
Daniel moved toward the window.
His face went pale.
"They're here.""
Rachel held Madison close.
"Who?""
Thomas looked at the door.
"The people Victor was afraid of.""
A shadow appeared behind the glass.
Then another.
Thomas grabbed Rachel's hand.
For the first time since she saw him alive, she felt his fear.
Not worry.
Not caution.
Fear.
"Rachel.""
"What?""
"You need to take Madison to the farmhouse.""
"What about you?""
Thomas looked toward the door.
"I need to finish what I started.""
Rachel shook her head.
"No.""
Thomas looked at her.
"If I don't, they will never stop.""
The door handle began to turn.
Slowly.
Thomas looked at Madison.
Then at Rachel.
And whispered:
"The person behind all of this isn't Victor.""
The door opened.
A familiar voice spoke from the darkness.
"You're finally ready to tell them, Thomas.""
Everyone froze.
Rachel knew that voice.
Because she had heard it her entire life.
The person standing outside stepped into the light.
May you like
And Thomas whispered the words Rachel never expected to hear.
"Rachel... your father is alive.""
