Amused

Chapter 6: The Name Hidden In The Dark

The voice came from inside the funeral hall.

Not outside.

Not through the broken doors.

Inside.

Rachel felt Madison's hand tighten around hers.

The darkness swallowed every familiar shape.

The coffin.

The flowers.

The chairs where relatives had been sitting only moments before.

Everything disappeared into shadow.

Someone moved.

A slow step.

Then another.

Rachel pulled Madison behind her.

"Who is there?""

No answer.

Only the sound of breathing.

Daniel whispered:

"Don't move.""

Rachel barely heard him.

Her entire body was focused on one thing.

Keeping her daughter safe.

The person who had been holding Thomas's envelope reached into their pocket.

Daniel noticed.

"Don't.""

They stopped.

"I was going to help.""

Daniel's voice was cold.

"You already helped enough.""

Rachel looked between them.

"Both of you stop.""

The darkness was making everything worse.

She needed answers.

She needed control.

But control was something she hadn't had since the moment she received the phone call two days ago.

The lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then returned.

Everyone looked toward the center of the room.

The funeral hall was empty.

Nobody was there.

Rachel's heart pounded.

"Where did he go?""

Daniel looked around carefully.

"He didn't leave.""

"How do you know?""

"Because the door never opened.""

Rachel looked toward the entrance.

The glass doors were still locked.

Then Madison quietly spoke.

"He was hiding.""

Everyone turned.

Rachel crouched.

"What?""

Madison looked toward the coffin.

"Like Daddy.""

The words made everyone uncomfortable.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Maddie, what did you see?""

The little girl pointed.

"Behind the curtain.""

Everyone looked.

At the far side of the room was a long black curtain separating the viewing area from a storage space.

Rachel had never noticed it before.

Daniel walked toward it.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He pulled it back.

Nothing.

Just boxes.

Cleaning supplies.

Old funeral decorations.

Rachel exhaled.

Then Daniel looked down.

A muddy footprint marked the floor.

Fresh.

Someone had been there.

The person who had been holding the phone whispered:

"He was never here to talk.""

Rachel looked at them.

"What does that mean?""

They looked toward the hidden camera.

"He was here to make sure we found it.""

Daniel frowned.

"Found what?""

The person looked at the camera.

"The next clue.""

Before Rachel could ask, Daniel picked up the camera from the flowers.

He examined it.

"No recording device.""

Rachel frowned.

"What?""

"It's only a transmitter.""

"A transmitter for what?""

Daniel looked toward the phone.

Thomas's voice was still connected.

"Rachel?""

She grabbed it.

"Thomas.""

"I'm here.""

"Someone was inside the funeral home.""

A pause.

Then Thomas said:

"I know.""

Her anger returned instantly.

"You know?""

"Rachel—"

"No.""

She stepped away from everyone.

"You don't get to keep saying my name like that fixes everything.""

Silence.

"You knew this could happen.""

"I knew there was a possibility.""

"You knew my daughter could be in danger.""

"I knew Madison would be protected.""

Rachel looked at Madison.

The little girl was standing quietly.

Too quietly.

"How?""

Thomas answered softly.

"Because I trusted her.""

Rachel closed her eyes.

"She's eight years old.""

"I know.""

"She should be worried about school.""

"I know.""

"Not secrets.""

"I know.""

His voice broke.

"But she was the only person who saw the truth.""

Rachel looked at Madison.

"What truth?""

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"The night before the accident, Madison saw someone entering my office.""

Rachel turned.

Madison looked down.

"You saw someone?""

The little girl nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Madison's eyes filled with guilt.

"Because Daddy told me not to.""

Rachel froze.

"What?""

Madison looked at the phone.

"Daddy said if I told anyone, the bad person would know I saw.""

Rachel felt hurt.

Her own daughter had been carrying a secret.

A dangerous one.

Alone.

"Madison...""

The little girl whispered:

"I'm sorry, Mommy.""

Rachel immediately pulled her close.

"No.""

She hugged her tightly.

"Don't ever think you have to protect me by yourself.""

Madison nodded against her shoulder.

Thomas stayed silent.

Then he said:

"Rachel.""

She looked at the phone.

"What?""

"I need you to listen.""

His voice became serious.

"The person who entered my office wasn't stealing money.""

"Then what were they looking for?""

"The files.""

"What files?""

"The files about the Clarke Foundation.""

Rachel frowned.

"The charity?""

Thomas had spent years running a small foundation helping families after accidents and disasters.

She knew that.

Everyone knew that.

"What about it?""

Thomas answered:

"The foundation wasn't just helping people.""

Rachel waited.

"It was collecting information.""

Rachel stared.

"Information?""

"About powerful people.""

Daniel looked up.

"Thomas...""

The person beside him went pale.

"You found it?""

Thomas didn't respond.

Rachel noticed.

"You know about this.""

Daniel looked away.

Another secret.

Another person who knew more than her.

Rachel's voice hardened.

"Everyone keeps acting like I am the last person who deserves to know what is happening.""

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

Thomas spoke quietly.

"I was trying to keep you alive.""

Rachel closed her eyes.

"By lying to me?""

"I was afraid.""

That stopped her.

Thomas Clarke wasn't someone who admitted fear.

Not easily.

Not ever.

"I spent my whole life believing I could fix problems.""

His voice cracked.

"But this time, the problem was inside our own circle.""

Rachel looked at the person beside Daniel.

The one holding the envelope.

"Who is it?""

Thomas was silent.

"Tell me.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because you won't believe me.""

Rachel looked at the person.

A horrible thought entered her mind.

"What do you mean?""

Thomas whispered:

"The person closest to Madison.""

Rachel's blood turned cold.

Her eyes immediately moved.

Toward the one person who had always been there.

The one person who had helped raise Madison.

The one person who had been crying beside Thomas's coffin.

Rachel couldn't speak.

"No.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Rachel...""

She shook her head.

"No.""

The person holding the phone stepped forward.

"Rachel, don't do this.""

But her voice sounded different now.

Not comforting.

Defensive.

Rachel stared.

"You knew.""

The person's face changed.

"I knew Thomas was in trouble.""

"You knew?""

"I was trying to help him.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

No answer.

Rachel felt the pieces connecting.

The late-night calls.

The secret meetings.

The strange way Thomas always changed the subject whenever this person visited.

"How long?""

The person looked down.

"Rachel...""

"How long did you know my husband was planning this?""

A long silence.

Then:

"Six months.""

Rachel stepped back.

Six months.

Six months of lies.

Six months of everyone knowing something was wrong except her.

Madison looked confused.

"But you love Daddy.""

The person's face softened.

"I do.""

"Then why did you hurt him?""

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Because it came from a child.

The person opened their mouth.

But no words came out.

Then Thomas spoke through the phone.

"Rachel.""

She listened.

"Take Madison and leave.""

"Where?""

"Go to the old farmhouse.""

Rachel looked toward the window.

"The tree?""

"Yes.""

"The box.""

"Yes.""

"What is inside?""

Thomas paused.

Then whispered:

"Everything.""

Suddenly, the funeral home's front doors slammed open.

This time, nobody was outside.

A man walked in.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

He looked around the room like he owned it.

Then his eyes landed on Rachel.

And he smiled.

"Finally.""

Rachel stepped back.

"Who are you?""

The man looked at Thomas's coffin.

Then at Madison.

"My name is Victor Hale.""

Daniel went completely still.

"No.""

Rachel noticed.

"You know him?""

Daniel's face turned pale.

"He's the reason Thomas disappeared.""

Victor smiled.

"And he's the reason Thomas will never come home.""

The phone in Rachel's hand went silent.

Thomas had disconnected.

Victor took one slow step forward.

Then he said:

"Rachel, your husband lied about one thing.""

She held Madison tighter.

"What?""

Victor looked directly at the little girl.

"He didn't fake his death to protect you.""

May you like

A pause.

"He faked his death because he was afraid of what Madison remembered.""
