Chapter 8: The Woman Behind The Family Secrets
Rachel turned slowly.
She didn't want to.
Every instinct inside her told her not to look.
Because some truths are easier to survive when they remain impossible.
But Madison's hand was trembling.
And Rachel knew her daughter had never lied to her.
Standing in the doorway was Evelyn Clarke.
Thomas's mother.
Madison's grandmother.
The woman who had held her son’s picture at the funeral.
The woman who had cried beside Rachel.
The woman who had hugged Madison and whispered, "Your daddy loved you more than anything.""
Rachel stared at her.
"No.""
Evelyn's face was pale.
She looked older than she had two days ago.
Not because of age.
Because of exhaustion.
Because of carrying something too heavy for too long.
"Rachel...""
Rachel stepped back.
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"You don't get to say my name.""
Evelyn looked at Madison.
"I never wanted her involved.""
Madison moved closer to Rachel.
"But I was.""
The words were quiet.
But they hurt.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"Sweetheart...""
"No.""
Madison shook her head.
"You lied.""
Rachel felt something break inside her.
Because Madison wasn't angry.
She sounded disappointed.
And disappointment from a child was sometimes worse than hatred.
Victor watched the scene carefully.
Almost like he was enjoying it.
"Now you understand.""
Rachel turned toward him.
"You knew.""
Victor smiled.
"I knew many things.""
Daniel immediately stepped between them.
"Don't listen to him.""
Rachel looked at Daniel.
"Then tell me the truth.""
Daniel didn't answer.
Again.
That silence.
That endless silence.
Rachel felt trapped inside a room full of people who all knew her life better than she did.
She looked at Evelyn.
"Did you betray Thomas?""
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"No.""
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Rachel noticed.
"Then why were you hiding?""
Evelyn looked toward the coffin.
"Because Thomas asked me to.""
Rachel froze.
"What?""
Evelyn stepped inside slowly.
"I didn't betray my son.""
Victor laughed.
"That's what she wants you to believe.""
Evelyn looked at him.
"You don't get to speak about my family.""
Victor smiled.
"Your family?""
His voice turned colder.
"You were the first person who helped me.""
Rachel stared at Evelyn.
"No.""
Evelyn looked away.
That was enough.
Rachel whispered:
"What does he mean?""
Evelyn didn't answer.
Victor did.
"Your mother-in-law and I have known each other for years.""
Rachel looked at Evelyn.
"How many years?""
Silence.
Then Evelyn said:
"Twenty.""
Rachel felt dizzy.
Twenty years.
Before she married Thomas.
Before Madison was born.
Before she even knew these people.
"You knew him before me.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Evelyn looked broken.
"Because Victor was part of Thomas's past.""
Daniel spoke quietly.
"And he was part of mine too.""
Rachel turned.
"You knew?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I knew Evelyn knew Victor.""
"And you didn't tell me.""
"I thought I was protecting Thomas's plan.""
Rachel shook her head.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
Her voice rose.
"Protecting. Protecting. Protecting.""
She pointed around the room.
"But nobody protected me.""
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing they could say.
Then Thomas's voice came from the phone.
Still connected.
Everyone turned.
"Rachel.""
Her heart stopped.
She grabbed it.
"Thomas?""
His voice was weak.
But real.
"I need you to leave.""
She almost laughed.
"Do you know how many times I've heard that tonight?""
"Rachel, listen.""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"You don't get to disappear for days and then tell me what to do.""
Silence.
Then Thomas said:
"You're right.""
The room went still.
"I was wrong.""
Rachel hadn't expected that.
Thomas rarely admitted mistakes.
"I thought I could control everything.""
His voice became softer.
"I thought if I carried the danger alone, you and Madison would never have to feel it.""
Rachel looked at Madison.
"But we did.""
"I know.""
"No, Thomas.""
She wiped her tears.
"You don't.""
A pause.
Then:
"I know now.""
Victor watched silently.
Evelyn sat down.
For the first time, she looked defeated.
Rachel looked at her.
"Tell me everything.""
Evelyn looked up.
"What?""
"Everything.""
Her voice was firm.
"No more secrets.""
Evelyn looked at Victor.
Then at Daniel.
Finally, she nodded.
"Twenty years ago, Thomas discovered Victor was using the Clarke Foundation to collect information.""
Rachel frowned.
"The foundation?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Victor convinced Thomas it was about helping people. He said the information would be used to stop criminals.""
"But?""
"But Victor started selling it.""
Rachel looked at Victor.
"You betrayed him.""
Victor smiled.
"I improved his idea.""
"No.""
Evelyn's voice became stronger.
"You destroyed everything Thomas built.""
Victor looked amused.
"And yet he still worked with me.""
Rachel looked at Thomas's coffin.
"What does he mean?""
Daniel answered.
"Thomas spent years trying to gather proof.""
Rachel looked at him.
"Against Victor?""
Daniel nodded.
"He needed evidence strong enough to expose him.""
Evelyn continued:
"Then Madison saw Victor that night.""
Rachel looked at her daughter.
"The storm.""
Evelyn nodded.
"She heard them arguing.""
Madison whispered:
"Daddy told him he was going to tell everyone.""
Evelyn looked at her.
"Yes.""
Rachel felt a chill.
"What happened after?""
Evelyn looked down.
"Victor realized Madison had seen him.""
Victor's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Rachel saw it.
"You were going to hurt her.""
Victor immediately shook his head.
"No.""
Evelyn looked at him.
"You thought about it.""
Silence.
And that was worse than an answer.
Rachel pulled Madison closer.
"You came after my daughter.""
Victor looked almost offended.
"No.""
"Then why did Thomas fake his death?""
Victor looked at her.
"Because he knew I was coming.""
Rachel looked confused.
Daniel said:
"Thomas created the fake accident to make Victor believe the evidence was gone.""
"And it wasn't?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No.""
She looked at Madison.
"Thomas hid the evidence where nobody would think to look.""
"The tree.""
Evelyn nodded.
"The tree.""
Rachel closed her eyes.
The old oak.
The place where Thomas proposed.
The place where Madison learned to climb.
The place where their family had created thousands of memories.
He had hidden the truth there.
Then Victor stepped forward.
"Enough.""
Everyone looked at him.
His calm expression was gone.
"We're wasting time.""
Daniel moved.
"Don't.""
Victor reached into his coat.
Rachel froze.
Madison gasped.
But instead of a weapon, Victor pulled out a small notebook.
He threw it onto the table.
"Thomas thought this would destroy me.""
Daniel opened it.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
"What?""
Rachel looked.
Daniel slowly turned the notebook around.
Inside were pages of names.
Dates.
Payments.
Records.
But one name appeared again and again.
Rachel's eyes moved over the page.
And stopped.
Because it wasn't Victor's name.
It wasn't Daniel's.
It wasn't Evelyn's.
It was Thomas Clarke.
"What is this?""
Victor smiled.
"The truth.""
Rachel looked at Daniel.
"Tell me this isn't real.""
Daniel didn't answer.
And for the first time that night...
Rachel saw fear on Daniel Reed's face.
Victor leaned closer.
"Your husband wasn't just hunting a traitor.""
He pointed at the notebook.
"He was hiding what he did.""
Rachel stared.
"No.""
Victor smiled.
"Thomas Clarke wasn't running from me.""
A pause.
"He was running from himself.""
The lights flickered again.
The phone in Rachel's hand suddenly buzzed.
A new message.
From Thomas.
Everyone watched as she opened it.
Only one sentence appeared.
*Rachel, don't believe the notebook.*
Her breath caught.
Then another message arrived.
*Because Victor wrote it.*
Rachel looked up.
May you like
But Victor was already gone.
And the funeral home's back door was slowly swinging open.
