Amused

Chapter 7: The Memory She Was Never Supposed To Share

The room went silent after Victor Hale spoke.

Not the peaceful silence of a funeral.

A heavier silence.

The kind that comes when everyone realizes the truth they were chasing might be worse than the mystery itself.

Rachel held Madison's hand tighter.

She refused to look away from Victor.

"Don't talk about my daughter.""

Victor tilted his head.

"That's exactly what Thomas did.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Leave.""

Victor looked amused.

"You still think you can order people around, Daniel?""

"I said leave.""

"And I said you still don't understand your place.""

Rachel noticed something.

Daniel wasn't angry.

He was afraid.

That frightened her more.

Because Daniel Reed was the person who walked into a funeral and admitted impossible things.

He was the person who found hidden cameras and secret files.

But Victor Hale had made him look powerless.

"Who is he?"" Rachel asked.

Nobody answered.

Victor smiled.

"Your husband never told you about me?""

Rachel looked at Daniel.

Then at Victor.

"No.""

"Of course not.""

Victor walked slowly around the room.

"Thomas always believed he could separate his personal life from his work.""

Rachel's voice hardened.

"My husband wasn't involved in anything that would make you come after my family.""

Victor stopped.

"Wasn't he?""

The question was quiet.

Almost gentle.

That made it worse.

Rachel felt anger rising.

"You expect me to believe you?""

"No.""

Victor looked at Madison.

"I expect her to remember.""

Madison moved closer to Rachel.

"I don't know you.""

Victor smiled.

"Yes, you do.""

The little girl shook her head.

"No.""

Victor stepped closer.

"Think carefully.""

Rachel immediately moved between them.

"Don't come any closer.""

Victor stopped.

"Ask her about the night of the storm.""

Rachel looked confused.

"What storm?""

Madison's face changed.

Just slightly.

But Rachel saw it.

And her heart sank.

"Maddie?""

The little girl looked down.

Victor noticed.

"There it is.""

Rachel turned toward him.

"What did you do?""

Victor ignored her.

"She remembers.""

Daniel's voice was low.

"Victor, stop.""

Victor laughed softly.

"You still protect them.""

Then he looked at Madison.

"You remember the red door, don't you?""

Madison's eyes widened.

Rachel felt a chill.

Because Madison had never mentioned a red door.

Not once.

Victor continued.

"The room behind it.""

Madison whispered:

"Stop.""

Everyone froze.

Rachel looked at her daughter.

"Maddie?""

The little girl covered her ears.

"I don't want to remember.""

Rachel immediately knelt.

"It's okay.""

But Madison shook her head.

"No.""

Her voice trembled.

"I promised Daddy.""

Rachel's heart broke.

"Promised him what?""

Madison looked at her mother.

"That I wouldn't tell.""

Rachel felt tears forming.

"You were carrying this all alone?""

Madison didn't answer.

Victor watched them.

Almost patiently.

Then he said:

"Thomas used his own daughter as a witness.""

Rachel turned toward him.

"Enough.""

"No.""

Victor's voice became sharper.

"He built this entire plan around what she saw.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't get to rewrite what happened.""

Victor looked at him.

"Then tell her.""

Daniel went silent.

Rachel looked between them.

"Tell me.""

Nobody spoke.

"Tell me what my daughter saw.""

Daniel looked away.

That was all the answer Rachel needed.

Her voice shook.

"Everyone knew.""

No one responded.

"Everyone knew something happened to her.""

Still nothing.

"And nobody told me.""

Daniel finally said:

"Thomas made us promise.""

Rachel laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

"My husband made everyone promise to keep secrets from me.""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"He thought it would protect you.""

Rachel looked at Madison.

"It didn't.""

Madison reached for her mother's hand.

"I'm sorry.""

Rachel immediately pulled her close.

"No, baby.""

She looked at Victor.

"You don't get to use her.""

Victor's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked annoyed.

"She is the reason all of this happened.""

Rachel stood.

"Explain.""

Victor looked at the coffin.

"Thomas found out about my operation.""

"Your operation?""

"Information trading.""

Rachel frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"It means Victor collected private information about people.""

Victor smiled.

"Collected is such an ugly word.""

Daniel continued.

"And he used it.""

Rachel looked at Victor.

"For what?""

Victor shrugged.

"Power.""

The simplicity of the answer made her sick.

Rachel looked at Madison.

"And my daughter?""

Victor's face became serious.

"Your daughter saw something she wasn't supposed to see.""

"What?""

Victor looked at Madison.

"She saw me meeting Thomas.""

Madison slowly nodded.

Rachel stared.

"When?""

The little girl whispered:

"At the old house.""

Rachel felt cold.

"The farmhouse?""

Madison nodded.

"It was raining.""

Rachel remembered.

The storm.

The one Victor mentioned.

Madison had been six years old.

Thomas had told her to stay upstairs because he had "work to do.""

But later that night, Madison had asked a strange question.

"Mommy, why do bad people whisper?""

Rachel had laughed.

She thought it was a child's imagination.

She never asked again.

"What did you see, Maddie?""

Madison looked terrified.

"I saw Uncle Victor.""

Rachel froze.

Uncle Victor.

Not related by blood.

But that was what Madison had called him.

Because Victor had been around their family for years.

He had brought her birthday presents.

He had helped Thomas build her treehouse.

He had smiled in family photos.

Rachel slowly looked at Victor.

"You were there.""

Victor didn't deny it.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because Thomas had something I wanted.""

"What?""

Victor smiled.

"The truth.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You never cared about the truth.""

Victor looked at him.

"You have no idea what I cared about.""

Rachel stepped forward.

"What happened that night?""

Madison squeezed her hand.

"Daddy told me to hide.""

Rachel looked down.

"Why?""

"Because Daddy and Uncle Victor were fighting.""

Victor's expression changed.

A tiny crack in his confidence.

Madison continued.

"Daddy said he knew what Uncle Victor did.""

"What did he do?""

The little girl looked at Victor.

Then whispered:

"He hurt people.""

The room went silent.

Victor stared at her.

Not angry.

Surprised.

Because Madison had remembered.

Rachel saw it.

The fear.

Not much.

Just enough.

Victor had not expected this little girl to still know.

Daniel moved toward the door.

"We need to go.""

Victor didn't stop him.

Instead, he said:

"You won't make it to the farmhouse.""

Rachel turned.

"What?""

Victor smiled.

"Because Thomas made another mistake.""

"What mistake?""

Victor looked at Madison.

"He told her where the evidence was.""

Rachel's stomach dropped.

"What are you talking about?""

Victor reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a small device.

A recording device.

Then he pressed a button.

Thomas's voice filled the room.

But it wasn't the same calm voice from the video.

It was a recording.

And Rachel immediately recognized the fear in it.

"Madison, if anyone comes asking about the box...""

Everyone listened.

Thomas continued.

"Do not trust them.""

A pause.

Then:

"Especially the person who tells you they came to help.""

Rachel slowly looked at Victor.

Victor smiled.

Because he knew something they didn't.

Then Thomas's recorded voice said the words that made Rachel's blood run cold.

"Because the person who betrayed me is not Victor.""

Silence.

The recording continued.

"The person who betrayed me is the one standing beside you right now.""

Everyone stopped.

Rachel looked around.

At Daniel.

At the funeral director.

At the person she thought she knew.

Nobody moved.

Then Madison quietly said:

"Mommy...""

Rachel turned.

The little girl was staring behind her.

Her face had gone pale.

"That's not the person Daddy was talking about.""

Rachel frowned.

"What?""

Madison pointed toward the doorway.

"The person Daddy was afraid of...""

A shadow appeared.

Someone standing outside.

Someone who had been listening.

Madison whispered the name.

And Rachel felt the world collapse.

May you like

Because it was the one name she never expected.

"Mommy... it's Grandma.""
