Chapter 9: The Man Behind Everything

The man waiting at the police station looked nothing like the person I remembered from old family photos.

But when he smiled, I knew.

Some people age.

Some people simply hide better.

“Emily.””

My blood went cold.

Nobody had said my name like that since childhood.

Like they knew me.

Like they owned a piece of my past.

Officer Miller introduced him.

“Thomas Vale.””

The name meant nothing.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Richard Collins.””

I turned.

“Rebecca’s father?””

Everyone went silent.

Rebecca.

Her father.

The man who had supposedly disappeared after his company collapsed.

The man everyone assumed had left town.

“You knew?””

I asked Daniel.

“Not until today.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your sister was smarter than everyone.””

My fists tightened.

“You killed her.””

He sighed.

“No.””

“You were involved.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

Thomas sat down.

“Lily discovered the truth about your parents. She discovered Margaret’s role. She discovered Jason’s affair.””

“Then why did she die?””

“Because she tried to expose everyone.””

I stared at him.

“And you?””

He looked away.

“I wanted the evidence.””

My voice shook.

“What evidence?””

“The original files.””

“What files?””

“The ones your father kept before he died.””

I understood.

The storage unit.

The recordings.

Everything Lily collected.

Thomas continued.

“Your father was going to expose us.””

“Us?””

He looked at me.

“Margaret. Me. Others.””

“Why?””

“Money.””

Of course.

Always money.

He continued.

“Jason didn’t plan Lily’s death.””

I thought of Rachel.

“He agreed.””

“Yes.””

“And Margaret?””

“She covered it.””

“And you?””

Thomas looked down.

“I created the situation.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Officer Miller did.

“He manipulated Jason into believing Lily’s death was the only way to access the inheritance.””

The room went silent.

Thomas looked at me.

“I never wanted Lily dead.””

I laughed bitterly.

“But she is.””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

And for the first time, he looked human.

“I underestimated her.””

That was the truth.

Everyone had.

They thought Lily was kind.

Soft.

Easy to control.

They forgot kindness was not weakness.

Lily had spent her final months building a trap.

And they had walked into it.

Officer Miller placed documents on the table.

“We have enough evidence.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your sister wanted you to know something.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew she might not survive.””

My eyes filled.

“She recorded a final message.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“A message?””

Thomas nodded.

“She left it somewhere only you would find.””

I found it that night.

Inside the old cookbook Lily and I shared.

A place nobody would search.

Because it wasn’t valuable.

It was just ours.

The video opened.

Lily appeared again.

This time, she was crying.

“Emily.””

I broke.

“I’m sorry.””

She wiped her face.

“I wanted to tell you everything.””

I touched the screen.

“I wanted to sit with you and tell you how scared I was.””

A pause.

“But I knew you would come running.””

A small smile.

“You always did.””

I cried harder.

Lily continued.

“So I made a plan.””

She held up a folder.

“If you’re watching this, it means everyone involved has been exposed.””

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“But there is one thing I need you to understand.””

The room went silent.

“I was not only fighting for myself.””

She touched her stomach.

“I was fighting for Noah.””

A tear fell.

“And I was fighting because I learned something about our family.””

She looked away.

“Something I almost never told anyone.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Lily whispered:

“Noah wasn’t the only baby I lost.””

I froze.

The screen went dark.

May you like

Then one final line appeared.

“I had a daughter before Noah.””
