Chapter 3: The Staircase
The investigation changed everything.
The town that once called Lily’s death a tragedy began asking different questions.
Not loudly.
Not publicly.
But everyone wondered.
How does a healthy pregnant woman fall down a staircase?
Why were there missing security recordings from the house?
Why had Jason changed the locks two days after Lily died?
Why was Rachel suddenly appearing everywhere?
I spent the next morning at Lily’s house.
The place felt wrong.
Her shoes were still by the door.
Her pregnancy books were still stacked beside the couch.
The nursery was untouched.
A tiny blue blanket rested in the crib.
Noah’s blanket.
The one Lily had spent three weeks making.
I touched it gently.
Then I noticed something.
A small envelope underneath.
My name was written on it.
Emily.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a note.
“Don’t look where everyone expects you to look.””
That was all.
No explanation.
No signature.
Just Lily’s handwriting.
Daniel arrived ten minutes later.
“You found something.””
I looked at him.
“How did you know?””
“Because Lily knew you would.””
I stared at him.
“You knew more than you told us.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily asked me not to reveal everything until she was gone.””
Anger rose inside me.
“She trusted you more than me?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“She trusted you differently.””
That hurt more.
Daniel walked toward the staircase.
“This is where she fell.””
I followed.
The wooden steps looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
“How can someone die here?””
Daniel pointed.
“Because someone wanted it to look accidental.””
I looked down.
At the bottom of the stairs was a small scratch on the floor.
“What is that?””
Daniel crouched.
“I don’t know yet.””
Then the front door opened.
Jason walked in.
Alone.
My body tensed.
“What are you doing here?””
He looked at me.
“This is my house.””
“Not anymore.””
His expression hardened.
“Careful.””
There it was again.
The warning.
Daniel stepped between us.
“Mr. Reed, you should leave.””
Jason laughed.
“You think you can scare me?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at him calmly.
“But I think the evidence might.””
Jason moved closer.
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
The words came out before he could stop them.
I saw Daniel notice.
Jason realized his mistake.
He quickly changed his expression.
“I mean you don’t know my marriage.””
I stared at him.
“Did Lily ask you for a divorce?””
Silence.
Jason looked away.
That was the answer.
“You knew she was leaving you.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice broke.
“She was going to leave you, wasn’t she?””
Jason’s face twisted.
“You have no idea what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
He didn’t.
And that was worse.
A phone rang.
Daniel looked down.
His phone.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“The lab finished analyzing the evidence from Lily’s house.””
My heart stopped.
“And?””
He looked at me.
“They found another person’s fingerprints on the staircase.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Whose?”” I whispered.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then toward Jason.
“The fingerprints belong to…”
The front door slammed open.
Rachel stood there.
Her face was white.
“Jason,” she whispered.
Everyone turned.
May you like
She looked terrified.
“I need to tell them the truth.””
