Chapter 10: Lily’s Final Truth

The next morning, I went to Daniel’s office.

I didn’t sleep.

I couldn’t.

One sentence kept repeating in my head.

I had a daughter before Noah.

Lily had never told me she was pregnant before.

Never.

Daniel was waiting.

“You saw the video.””

I nodded.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Daniel opened a file.

Inside was a birth certificate.

A child’s name.

A child who had lived.

My hands shook.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She’s alive.””

The room disappeared.

“Who?””

He pushed the document toward me.

The mother’s name.

Lily Reed.

The father’s name.

Jason Reed.

My stomach dropped.

“Jason knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Because the child was taken away.””

I felt sick.

“Taken?””

“Officially, the baby died.””

My heart stopped.

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Lily discovered the truth weeks before she died.””

I understood.

That was the final secret.

The one worth killing for.

“Where is she?””

Daniel handed me another document.

A foster record.

A little girl.

Four years old.

Her name:

Emma.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Her name is Emma?””

Daniel nodded.

“Lily named her.””

My eyes filled.

Because Lily had always loved that name.

She told me once:

“If I ever had a daughter, I’d want her to have a name that means she belongs.””

I looked at the photograph.

A little girl with Lily’s eyes.

My sister’s eyes.

Months later, the courtroom was full.

Jason was convicted for conspiracy and fraud.

Rachel testified against him and accepted her sentence.

Margaret was charged with financial crimes and obstruction.

Thomas Vale faced the longest list of charges.

But the person who mattered most was not in the courtroom.

She was sitting beside me.

Emma.

Lily’s daughter.

She held my hand during the hearing.

“Is Mommy coming back?””

The question almost destroyed me.

I knelt beside her.

“No.””

I swallowed.

“But she loved you every single day.””

Emma looked at me.

“How do you know?””

Because Lily left proof.

Thousands of pages.

Hundreds of photos.

Letters for birthdays she never got to see.

A box for every year of Emma’s life.

My sister had planned everything.

She had known she might not be there.

So she made sure Emma would always know.

A year after Lily’s death, we returned to Willow Creek.

To the church.

The same place where everything began.

But this time, there was no funeral.

No rain.

No closed casket.

Only sunlight.

Emma placed white lilies beside Lily’s memorial.

I stood beside her.

Thinking about the day I thought I lost my sister forever.

I was wrong.

Lily had never left completely.

She was in every letter.

Every warning.

Every choice she made.

She had spent her final days making sure the truth survived.

And she did.

After everyone left, I found one last envelope beneath the memorial.

My name.

Again.

Inside was Lily’s handwriting.

“Emily,

If you are reading this, then you know everything.

But I hope you also know one more thing.

I was never trying to make you carry my pain.

I was trying to give you my strength.

You always thought I was the brave one.

You were wrong.

I learned courage from you.

You protected me when we were children.

Now you protect my daughter.

That is the greatest gift anyone could give me.

Tell Emma that her mother loved her.

Tell her I fought for her.

And tell her this:

The truth always finds its way home.””

I folded the letter carefully.

Then I looked at Emma.

She was laughing beneath the trees.

For the first time in a year, I wasn’t thinking about how Lily died.

I was thinking about how she lived.

How she loved.

How she fought.

My sister’s funeral was supposed to be the day we said goodbye to Lily Reed.

Instead, it became the day she started telling the world the truth.

May you like

And in the end…

the truth brought her home.
