The Letter Lily Left Behind / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: Rachel’s Confession

Rachel did not look like the woman who had walked into Lily’s funeral.

That woman had been confident.

Perfect.

Untouchable.

This woman looked broken.

Jason stared at her.

“What are you doing?””

Rachel ignored him.

“I was there.””

The room froze.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where?””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“At the house.””

My knees nearly gave out.

The house.

The night Lily died.

Jason moved toward her.

“Rachel, stop talking.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

A single word.

But it carried years of fear.

“I’m done protecting you.””

Jason’s face changed.

“Protecting me?””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You told me everything would be fine.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was already recording.

Rachel continued.

“You told me Lily was going to leave you anyway.””

My stomach turned.

“You told me she would take the baby and ruin your life.””

Jason’s voice became sharper.

“Rachel.””

She flinched.

And that told me everything.

“You pushed her.””

The words landed like a gunshot.

No one moved.

Rachel cried.

“I didn’t mean for her to fall.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I couldn’t breathe.

Jason shook his head.

“She’s lying.””

Rachel looked at him.

“You told me to go upstairs.””

“You’re confused.””

“You told me she had to be scared.””

“Stop.””

“You said if Lily disappeared, we could finally be together.””

The room went silent.

Then Jason snapped.

“You were obsessed with me!””

Rachel stepped back.

“I loved you.””

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“You loved the version of me you invented.””

I saw it then.

The mask was gone.

Not grief.

Not sadness.

Nothing.

Only anger.

Daniel quietly handed the recording to Officer Miller, who had arrived outside moments earlier.

Jason saw her.

And for the first time, fear appeared.

“Emily,” he said.

I looked at him.

“You knew me.””

His voice softened.

“You know I loved Lily.””

I thought about my sister.

Her notes.

Her fears.

Her unborn son.

“You loved controlling Lily.””

His face changed.

I walked toward the nursery.

“I found her letter.””

Jason froze.

“What letter?””

The question came too quickly.

Too desperately.

I looked back.

“The one she hid because she knew you would search everything.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You found another one?””

I nodded.

Behind the crib mattress.

A final letter.

Lily’s final words.

I opened it.

And read the first line.

“If Jason is hearing this, then Rachel was not the only person I was afraid of.””

My blood went cold.

Because Rachel had confessed.

But Lily’s letter said there was more.

Someone else.

Someone she feared.

May you like

I continued reading.

“My husband was never working alone.””
