Chapter 8: The Truth About David
Nobody spoke after the video ended.
The silence was unbearable.
David sat at the desk, staring at the black screen.
I had never seen him look so lost.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Broken.
“Say something,” I whispered.
He laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because sometimes pain comes out that way.
“My entire life was a question mark.””
I sat beside him.
“David…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I need to understand.””
He played the video again.
His father explained everything.
Years before David was born, Evelyn had a relationship she hid from everyone.
When she became pregnant, she married David’s father.
But the truth was revealed years later.
David’s father stayed.
Not because he wasn’t hurt.
Because he loved David.
He raised him.
Protected him.
And planned to tell him the truth when he was old enough.
But Evelyn never wanted that.
Because she had built her power over David through fear.
She convinced him that if the truth came out, he would lose everything.
His family.
His name.
His home.
At the end of the video, David’s father looked into the camera.
“David, being my son was never about blood.””
A pause.
“It was about every day I chose you.””
David covered his face.
I put my hand on his shoulder.
For the first time in years, I saw him separate from Evelyn’s influence.
Not her son.
Just David.
A man who had been carrying a secret he didn’t understand.
Then the doorbell rang.
We all froze.
I looked at Chloe.
She whispered:
“Who is that?””
David stood.
“I’ll check.””
“No.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Not alone.””
We walked to the front door together.
When David opened it, Evelyn stood outside.
She looked at the three of us.
Then she saw the flash drive.
Her face changed.
“You found it.””
David stared at her.
“Why?””
Her expression softened.
“Because I was protecting you.””
“No.””
His voice was different.
Stronger.
“You were controlling me.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at the flash drive.
Then at me.
Then at Chloe.
Finally, she whispered:
“I did terrible things because I was afraid.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
Then she continued.
“Your father was going to leave me with nothing.””
David stepped forward.
“So you lied?””
“I survived.””
“You destroyed people.””
She looked at him.
“You think you’re different from me?””
That stopped him.
“What?””
“You think Hannah knows everything about you?””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“There are still things David hasn’t told you.””
I looked at my husband.
He looked confused.
“Mom, stop.””
But she continued.
“Ask him about the night of the accident.””
David went completely still.
My heart dropped.
“What accident?””
Nobody answered.
Evelyn walked away.
Leaving behind the one thing she always left behind.
A question.
That night, after Chloe fell asleep, I sat across from David.
“Tell me.””
He looked exhausted.
“Hannah…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I defended you when everyone told me something was wrong with your family.””
“I know.””
“I stood beside you.””
“I know.””
“Now tell me the truth.””
Long silence.
Then David whispered:
“Before my father died…”
May you like
He looked at the floor.
“I was there.””
