Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Knew

The woman standing in front of me had the same necklace.

A small silver pendant shaped like a flower.

I had seen it in every old photograph Evelyn kept locked away in her bedroom.

I had always assumed it was just jewelry.

Now I understood.

It was a connection.

A secret.

A reminder of the daughter Evelyn had erased from the family story.

The woman looked at me with tired eyes.

“I know this is a lot.””

I couldn’t move.

“Who are you?””

She swallowed.

“My name is Claire Vance.””

The last name hit me harder than I expected.

Vance.

Not because I didn’t know it.

Because I had spent twelve years hearing it.

From Evelyn.

From David.

From every family gathering where Evelyn reminded everyone that the Vance name meant something.

Claire looked down.

“I’m David’s sister.””

I looked at Laura.

She nodded.

“She’s telling the truth.””

I sat back slowly.

My mind was trying to catch up.

David had a sister.

A sister nobody knew existed.

A sister who had been around my family without ever saying a word.

“Why?”” I asked.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I wasn’t supposed to exist.””

The sentence made my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“My father left my mother before I was born. Evelyn found out. She made sure nobody knew.””

“But David’s father died.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide you?””

Claire looked at the folder.

“Because of the house.””

Everything always came back to the house.

The walls.

The property.

The keys.

The documents.

The thing that had turned a family into enemies.

“My father wrote a will,” Claire said.

“After he died, Evelyn found out the house wasn’t hers. It belonged equally to both his children.””

“David and you.””

She nodded.

“She couldn’t accept that.””

I looked at the documents again.

“So she tried to make David sign everything over.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she just tell him about you?””

Claire gave a bitter smile.

“Because if David knew I existed, he would have looked for me.””

“And?””

“And he would have learned the truth.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What truth?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she pushed another document across the table.

A medical record.

A hospital name.

A date.

I looked at it.

Then my heart stopped.

The date was twelve years ago.

The year David’s father died.

“What is this?””

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“Your father-in-law didn’t die alone.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He had a heart attack at my mother’s house.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“That’s what Evelyn wanted everyone to believe.””

The room suddenly felt too small.

“You’re saying Evelyn lied about his death?””

“I’m saying Evelyn changed the story.””

I thought about the key.

The stranger.

The documents.

The way she always acted like she owned everything.

“How?””

Claire looked away.

“Because my father was planning to change his will.””

I felt a chill.

“He was going to include you.””

“Yes.””

“And Evelyn found out.””

Claire nodded.

“She knew if the truth came out, she would lose control.””

I closed my eyes.

For years, everyone had believed Evelyn was simply difficult.

Controlling.

Overbearing.

But this was something else.

This was a woman who had built an entire life around a lie.

My phone buzzed.

David.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His voice sounded tense.

“Hannah, I need you to come home.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your mother called me.””

My grip tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She said she knows about Claire.””

My heart dropped.

“How?””

David lowered his voice.

“Because Claire was never the only person Evelyn was hiding.””

I stood.

“What do you mean?””

Before he answered, I heard a noise behind him.

A door opening.

Then Evelyn’s voice.

“David?””

The call went silent.

“David?””

Nothing.

I grabbed my bag.

But before I could leave, Claire grabbed my arm.

“Hannah.””

I looked at her.

“You need to know something.””

“What?””

Her face turned pale.

“The person Evelyn paid at the mall…”

I froze.

“Yes?””

Claire whispered:

“He wasn’t trying to break into your house.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

May you like

Claire looked terrified.

“He was trying to remove something from inside it.””
