Chapter 3: The Secret File

I had never been afraid of Evelyn.

I had been annoyed by her.

Frustrated by her.

Exhausted by her.

But never afraid.

That changed when I saw the photograph.

Because I had never told anyone about that lawyer’s office.

Not even David.

Six months earlier, after another argument with Evelyn, I had quietly searched for advice about protecting my home.

Not because I wanted a divorce.

Not because I wanted to leave.

Because I wanted to know my rights.

I had felt guilty even making the appointment.

Now someone knew.

Someone had been watching.

David sat beside me at the kitchen table.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked at him.

“Because every time I brought up your mother, you defended her.””

He looked down.

“That’s fair.””

It was the first time he had said those words.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“I never wanted to choose between you and her,” he said.

“But she always made it a choice.””

David didn’t argue.

That was when I knew something inside him had changed.

We searched through the documents Evelyn left behind.

Hidden between pages was a printed email.

From an unknown address.

The subject line said:

“Final Arrangement.””

The email was short.

The sender wrote:

“The transfer must happen before Hannah discovers the truth.””

My hands shook.

“Transfer of what?””

David read the next line.

Then his face went pale.

“The house.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

David grabbed another page.

“There’s more.””

A legal document.

A name.

A signature.

I leaned closer.

Then I saw it.

The signature wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t David’s.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone who claimed ownership over our home.

“Who is that?”” I whispered.

David didn’t answer.

Because he recognized the name.

“David?””

He closed his eyes.

“That’s my father.””

I froze.

“Your father died twelve years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how is his name on this?””

David looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

At that moment, Chloe appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

“Mom?””

We both turned.

She was holding something.

A small notebook.

“I found this in Grandma’s coat pocket.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why did you have Grandma’s coat?””

“She left it here.””

David took the notebook.

Inside were pages of handwritten notes.

Dates.

Names.

Plans.

And on the final page, one sentence:

“Once David signs, Hannah loses everything.””
