Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Plan

We didn’t sleep that night.

Every piece of evidence led to another question.

And every question led back to Evelyn.

By morning, David finally admitted something he had hidden for years.

“My mom has been talking about this house since before we bought it.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She always said our family property should stay in the family.””

“This is our property.””

“I know.””

“Does she know?””

David looked embarrassed.

“I stopped correcting her.””

That sentence hurt.

Because sometimes silence is a decision.

Later that afternoon, we met with an attorney.

The documents were worse than we expected.

Someone had attempted to create a claim against our house using old family records.

But the attorney noticed something.

“This signature is fake.””

David exhaled.

“So she forged it?””

The attorney shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

She pointed at the page.

“This document was created recently, but the signature belongs to someone else.””

“Who?””

The attorney looked at David.

“Your father.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“How?””

The attorney leaned back.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

When we returned home, Evelyn was waiting outside.

Alone.

She looked tired for the first time.

“David, please.””

He stepped forward.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No, Mom. You were trying to control everything.””

She flinched.

“I lost everything after your father died.””

David’s voice softened slightly.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

She looked at our house.

“This house was supposed to be mine.””

My anger disappeared.

Because finally, she admitted it.

“You wanted our home.””

“I wanted what was promised to me.””

“By who?””

She looked at David.

And whispered:

“By your father.””

The words hung in the air.

Then Evelyn reached into her purse.

She pulled out a photograph.

An old photograph.

David’s father stood beside a woman I had never seen before.

And beside them was a little girl.

Evelyn pointed at the child.

“Your father had another family.””

David stared.

“What?””

“That house wasn’t just connected to him.””

She looked at me.

“It was connected to her.””

I looked at the photograph.

The little girl.

The unfamiliar woman.

The secret Evelyn had carried for over a decade.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

“I know what Evelyn did. Meet me if you want the truth about your husband’s family.””
