Chapter 6: What Happened on the Night My Mother Died

For eight years, I had remembered my mother's final night in fragments.
The smell of hospital disinfectant.
The blue blanket covering her legs.
My father's hand resting on my shoulder.
The doctor speaking quietly in the hallway.
And Vanessa telling me that my mother had died peacefully in her sleep.
I had never questioned that story.
Not once.
Now my father stood in the kitchen, surrounded by broken glass, telling me Vanessa had declared my mother dead before an ambulance was called.
"Explain," I whispered.
Richard lowered himself into a chair.
His face looked gray.
"Your mother had been feeling unwell for several weeks. She was exhausted. She complained about headaches and dizziness.""
I remembered.
She had started sitting down halfway through sewing projects.
Sometimes she would press her fingers against her temples and close her eyes.
I had asked her if she was sick.
She always smiled.
"Just tired, sweetheart.""
My father continued.
"One evening, she went upstairs early. I stayed downstairs with Vanessa.""
"Why?""
"Claire asked me to give her some space. We had been arguing.""
"About what?""
He looked toward the doorway.
Vanessa had entered the kitchen.
She stood behind him, arms folded.
"Richard, don't.""
He ignored her.
"Your mother had discovered more missing money. She believed Vanessa had been moving company funds into personal accounts.""
"Was she right?""
"Yes.""
I stared at him.
He continued.
"Claire confronted us that night. She had found a bank statement in the study. She was furious.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That is not what happened.""
My father looked up.
"Then tell her.""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"I don't owe her an explanation.""
"You told me Claire was dead.""
"I told you she wasn't responding!""
"Those are not the same thing.""
I looked between them.
"What happened after you argued?""
Richard swallowed.
"Your mother went upstairs. I heard something fall.""
My stomach tightened.
"What fell?""
"A glass. I think.""
"And?""
"I went up a few minutes later. She was on the floor beside the sewing table.""
I grabbed the edge of the counter.
"Was she breathing?""
He looked down.
"I don't know.""
"You don't know?""
"I panicked.""
Vanessa interrupted.
"Your father was terrified. He didn't know what to do.""
I turned toward her.
"Then why didn't you call emergency services?""
She said nothing.
My father continued.
"Vanessa came upstairs. She checked Claire's pulse.""
"And?""
"She told me Claire was gone.""
I felt sick.
"Did you check?""
"Yes.""
"Did you call an ambulance?""
He closed his eyes.
"Not immediately.""
"How long?""
"I don't know.""
"How long, Dad?""
He looked at me.
"Twenty-three minutes.""
I stepped backward.
Twenty-three minutes.
My mother had been lying on the floor for twenty-three minutes while the people who were supposed to protect her stood beside her.
"Why?""
Richard's voice cracked.
"Vanessa said there was nothing we could do.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"You're a nurse?""
"No.""
"You're a doctor?""
"No.""
"Then why did anyone listen to you?""
Her face hardened.
"Your father was in shock.""
I shook my head.
"Did Mom die because you delayed the ambulance?""
Vanessa's expression turned cold.
"Your mother was very ill. She was going to die regardless.""
I stared at her.
"You don't know that.""
"Neither do you.""
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
He had come downstairs carrying the leather folder.
"Actually," he said, "we may be able to establish what happened.""
My father looked up.
"Daniel, please.""
Daniel placed the folder on the kitchen table.
"Claire's medical records were part of the estate investigation. I requested them years ago, but the hospital informed me that the family had declined to release them.""
I looked at my father.
"You refused?""
Richard rubbed his face.
"I couldn't deal with it.""
Daniel opened the folder.
"According to the hospital report, Claire was brought in after suffering a cardiac event. The emergency physician documented signs consistent with a potentially reversible condition.""
My heart began pounding.
"Potentially reversible?""
Daniel nodded.
"The doctor noted that the delay between discovery and emergency treatment may have affected the outcome.""
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
My mother might have survived.
The thought was unbearable.
"Was she conscious when the ambulance arrived?""
Daniel looked at the report.
"She was unresponsive.""
I turned toward my father.
"You knew this?""
He started crying.
"I was told she probably wouldn't have survived anyway.""
"Who told you that?""
He looked at Vanessa.
She didn't move.
"Who?"" I demanded.
My father finally answered.
"Vanessa.""
I covered my mouth.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"You're twisting everything. Claire had a serious medical condition. No one could have predicted what would happen.""
Daniel closed the folder.
"That's a matter for medical professionals to determine.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You can't reopen a death investigation because a child found an old letter.""
"An adult beneficiary can request the release of relevant records, particularly where potential misconduct is involved.""
She laughed.
"Misconduct? What exactly are you accusing me of?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he removed a small document from the leather folder.
"Before we discuss that, I want to show you something.""
He placed it on the table.
It was a photocopy of a handwritten note.
My mother's handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
If I become incapacitated, call Dr. Samuel Reed immediately. Do not allow Vanessa to make medical decisions on my behalf.
I stared at the paper.
"Who is Dr. Reed?""
Eleanor stepped closer.
"He was Claire's physician.""
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother specifically instructed the family to contact him in an emergency.""
I looked at my father.
"Did you call him?""
Richard shook his head.
"Vanessa said he was unavailable.""
"Did you try?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa reached for the note.
Daniel moved it away.
"Don't touch that.""
She laughed.
"That handwriting proves nothing.""
"No," Daniel replied.
"But it establishes that Claire had given specific instructions.""
He removed another page.
"And this is the call log from the hospital records.""
I frowned.
"What does it show?""
"An emergency call was made at 10:47 p.m. But there was also a call from the family residence to a private number at 10:19 p.m.""
Daniel pointed to the number.
"Do you recognize it, Richard?""
My father stared at the page.
His expression changed.
"That's not possible.""
"Do you recognize it?""
Richard nodded slowly.
"It belongs to Dr. Reed.""
I looked at him.
"Then why didn't you tell him what happened?""
My father began shaking.
"Because Vanessa said he had already been contacted.""
Vanessa's face had gone completely white.
Daniel turned toward her.
"Was he?""
She said nothing.
"Vanessa?""
"You're making accusations based on incomplete information.""
Daniel took another document from the folder.
"This is a statement from Dr. Reed. He says he never received a call from Richard that night.""
My father stared.
"What?""
"He also says someone called his office the following morning and instructed his receptionist to remove Claire from the emergency contact list.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She slowly stepped backward.
My father stood.
"Vanessa, what did you do?""
She lifted her chin.
"I was protecting this family.""
"From what?""
"From Claire!""
The words exploded through the kitchen.
Everyone froze.
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"She was going to ruin everything. She was going to take the company away, leave me with nothing, and make you choose between your daughter and your wife.""
My father stared at her.
"She was my wife.""
"And I was your future!""
I felt cold all over.
Vanessa turned toward me.
"Your mother was obsessed with you. Everything was for Amelia. The company, the money, the house. She never considered what would happen to the rest of us.""
I looked at her.
"You were stealing from her.""
"I was entitled to something!""
"No. You weren't.""
Her eyes flashed.
"Your mother made a promise to me.""
"What promise?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"She promised your father and I would be taken care of. She promised there would be enough for everyone.""
"Then why did you take my inheritance?""
"Because your mother changed everything!""
She suddenly stopped.
Daniel's expression sharpened.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa looked at him.
Nothing.
Then she turned toward Richard.
"Tell her what Claire did before she died.""
My father looked confused.
"What?""
"Tell her about the second will.""
Daniel went completely still.
"The second will?"" he repeated.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
She had said too much.
I looked at Daniel.
"Is there another will?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he reached into his briefcase and removed a sealed document.
"Actually, Amelia, there is.""
My heart pounded.
"Why didn't you show me?""
"Because it was sealed under specific instructions. It was to be opened only if the original trust was challenged or if evidence of fraudulent transfers emerged.""
He placed it on the table.
The seal was intact.
My mother's signature crossed the back.
Daniel examined it carefully.
Then he looked at my father.
"Richard, I need to ask you something.""
My father nodded weakly.
"Did you know Claire changed her will three days before she died?""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"And did you know she left instructions concerning a person who was not supposed to be anywhere near Amelia's inheritance?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
I looked down at the envelope.
My mother's handwriting was still visible.
This time, beneath her signature, were four words.
To be opened after my death.
Daniel carefully broke the seal.
He unfolded the first page.
His eyes moved across the document.
Then he stopped.
"Amelia," he said quietly.
"Your mother didn't just leave you the company.""
I leaned closer.
"What else?""
He looked at Vanessa.
"She named someone as the independent guardian of your inheritance.""
My father frowned.
"Who?""
Daniel turned the page toward us.
And there, in my mother's handwriting, was a name that made Vanessa grab the edge of the kitchen counter.
*Eleanor Whitmore.*
But beneath Eleanor's name was a second instruction.
One that changed everything.
If Vanessa Hart is ever investigated for financial misconduct, the original evidence must be released to the authorities, including the recording.
I looked up.
"Recording?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Your mother left an audio recording.""
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the document.
"NO!""
Daniel pulled it away.
She stumbled against the table, knocking over a chair.
"Give it to me!""
Richard grabbed her arm.
"Vanessa, stop!""
She turned on him.
"You stupid man! You have no idea what she recorded!""
The kitchen fell silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the sealed evidence packet Daniel had just removed from his briefcase.
My mother had left behind more than money.
More than a company.
More than a letter.
May you like
She had left a voice.
And for the first time in eight years, I was about to hear what she had been trying to tell me all along.
