Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Blue Lining

I didn't wait for the competition results.
The moment the final announcement ended, I hurried backstage and found Daniel near the dressing rooms.
"Take me home.""
He looked up from his phone.
"Amelia, I thought we agreed you wouldn't go back tonight.""
"There's something my mother hid in her blue sewing box. Vanessa knows I found the letter. She just called someone and told them to get to the house before I do.""
Daniel immediately stood.
"What exactly did you hear?""
I repeated the conversation.
His expression darkened.
"Where is the sewing box?""
"In the attic.""
"Then we're going to get it.""
Eleanor appeared behind us.
"I'm coming.""
Daniel frowned.
"Eleanor, this is a legal matter.""
"And Claire was my friend. I'm not sending her daughter into that house alone.""
Rachel stepped forward.
"I can come too.""
I shook my head.
"You don't have to.""
"I know," she replied.
"But I want to.""
We left through the side entrance.
The parking lot was nearly empty.
My father's car was gone.
Vanessa's white SUV was still parked near the entrance, but she wasn't inside.
Daniel called someone while we walked.
"Hello, Mark? It's Daniel Brooks. I need you to meet us at the Hart residence.
Yes, immediately. Bring the relevant estate records.""
He ended the call.
"Who was that?"" I asked.
"An investigator I work with.""
"Are we expecting trouble?""
Daniel glanced at me.
"I'm hoping not.""
The drive home took twenty minutes.
I sat in the back seat, holding my mother's letter.
Rachel sat beside me.
Eleanor was in the front passenger seat.
When we turned onto my street, I noticed something immediately.
The garage door was open.
My father's car was parked outside.
And the front door stood slightly ajar.
"That's strange," I whispered.
Daniel pulled over.
"Stay here.""
He stepped out.
Eleanor followed him.
I watched them approach the entrance.
Then I saw a shadow move behind the front window.
Someone was inside.
A moment later, Daniel turned and waved us forward.
"Come on. The house is empty.""
I climbed out.
The first thing I noticed when I entered was the smell.
Lavender cleaning spray.
Vanessa used it every evening, insisting that the house should smell like a luxury hotel.
But beneath it was something sharper.
Smoke.
I looked toward the living room.
A small metal wastebasket sat beside the fireplace.
Inside were half-burned papers.
My heart began racing.
"Daniel.""
He approached.
"Don't touch anything.""
I pointed toward the fireplace.
The papers were blackened around the edges, but one surviving corner showed the words CLAIRE HART STUDIO.
Eleanor bent closer.
"She's destroying documents.""
Daniel took photographs.
"Or someone is.""
I looked toward the stairs.
"The attic.""
We climbed together.
The old wooden steps creaked beneath our feet.
At the top, I pushed open the small door.
Dust floated through the narrow window.
The room smelled like cedar, old fabric, and the faint perfume my mother used to wear.
Her sewing cabinet stood against the far wall.
I rushed toward it.
The cabinet was still there, but the top drawer had been pulled out.
Fabric scraps were scattered across the floor.
Someone had been searching.
I dropped to my knees.
"Where is it?""
"What?"" Rachel asked.
"The blue sewing box.""
I searched beneath a pile of folded blankets.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a small piece of blue thread caught in the hinge of an old wooden trunk.
I opened it.
Inside were my mother's old coats.
And beneath them was the blue box.
I lifted it carefully.
The lid was covered in tiny painted flowers.
My mother had made those herself.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Then I opened it.
Inside were needles, spools of thread, old buttons, and a pair of silver scissors.
I removed everything.
The bottom seemed unusually thick.
I ran my fingers along the lining.
There was a small opening beneath the fabric.
I pulled gently.
A hidden compartment appeared.
Inside was a thin leather folder.
My hands began shaking.
Daniel crouched beside me.
"Don't open anything until I photograph it.""
He took several pictures.
Then he carefully removed the folder.
It contained three things.
A bank ledger.
A small USB drive.
And a handwritten document bearing my mother's signature.
Eleanor leaned closer.
"Claire's original ownership agreement.""
Daniel opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he smiled faintly.
"Well.""
"What?"" I asked.
"This is the document we've been looking for.""
He turned the page.
"Your mother established the trust with an additional condition.""
"What condition?""
Daniel pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"Neither your father nor any subsequent spouse could receive ownership of Claire Hart Studio or its intellectual property through guardianship, marriage, or inheritance.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means your mother anticipated the possibility that someone might attempt to transfer her company through your father's legal authority.""
Eleanor nodded.
"Claire was very careful.""
I looked at the USB drive.
"What's on this?""
Daniel placed it inside a protective envelope.
"We'll have it examined.""
"But what if it contains the missing records?""
"Then it may answer several questions.""
I looked around the attic.
There were photographs of my mother on the walls.
One showed her standing beside Eleanor at a fashion exhibition.
Another showed her holding me in front of the sewing machine.
I picked it up.
A small note was written on the back.
For Amelia. One day, you will understand why I kept every scrap.
I pressed the photograph against my chest.
Then I heard footsteps.
Heavy footsteps.
Coming up the stairs.
Daniel immediately stood.
"Everyone stay back.""
The attic door swung open.
Vanessa appeared.
Her champagne-colored dress had been replaced by a black coat, and her hair was no longer perfectly arranged.
She looked directly at the leather folder.
Then at me.
"Give it to me.""
I stood.
"No.""
She stepped into the room.
"Amelia, you have no idea what you're holding.""
"I know it's Mom's.""
"Those documents belong to the family.""
"They belong to me.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Your mother was very good at making people believe things. She convinced you that you were some kind of princess.""
"Why did you come here?""
"To stop you from making a mistake.""
Daniel moved between us.
"Vanessa, you need to leave.""
She ignored him.
Her eyes were fixed on the folder.
"Richard told me you found it.""
"Where is my father?""
"He's downstairs.""
"Why didn't he come up?""
"Because he's ashamed of you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Vanessa smiled.
"He's tired, Amelia. Tired of your accusations. Tired of your little performances. Tired of being reminded of a woman who died eight years ago.""
I looked at her.
"You were searching for this before I arrived.""
"I was looking for old family photographs.""
"Then why are there burned documents downstairs?""
Her smile disappeared.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Vanessa, I have photographed the evidence. Any attempt to remove or destroy these materials will be documented.""
She looked at him.
"You can't prove I did anything.""
"That's why we're preserving everything.""
Vanessa suddenly reached toward the folder.
I pulled it behind me.
"Don't!""
She grabbed my wrist.
Her nails dug into my skin.
"Give it to me!""
Rachel shouted.
"Let her go!""
Daniel immediately stepped between us and separated Vanessa's hand from my arm.
"That's enough.""
Vanessa stumbled backward.
Her expression changed.
For a second, she looked almost frightened.
Then she pointed at me.
"You have no idea what your mother did.""
I stared at her.
"What did she do?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
"She didn't just leave you money.""
"What?""
"She left you something that could destroy everyone.""
Daniel went completely still.
Eleanor looked at her sharply.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said.
She turned toward the door.
Daniel moved to block it.
"Vanessa, I think you should explain that statement.""
"Move.""
"Not until we understand what you mean.""
She laughed nervously.
"You think you're clever, don't you?""
Then she looked at me.
"Ask your father what happened the night your mother died.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"What?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Ask him why he didn't call an ambulance immediately.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Vanessa, stop talking.""
But she continued.
"Ask him why your mother was alone when she needed him most.""
I looked at Daniel.
Then Eleanor.
Neither spoke.
My voice barely worked.
"Is that true?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Go on, Amelia. Ask him.""
I ran downstairs.
My father was standing in the kitchen, holding a glass of water.
He looked up when I entered.
"Amelia?""
I stopped in front of him.
"Where were you the night Mom died?""
His hand began shaking.
"Why are you asking me that?""
"Why didn't you call an ambulance immediately?""
The glass slipped from his fingers.
It shattered against the kitchen tiles.
May you like
And my father whispered something I had never expected to hear.
"Because Vanessa told me your mother was already dead.""
