Amused

Chapter 8: The Stage Where They Planned My Fall

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Aunt Lily’s footsteps disappeared down the hallway.

But her final words remained.

The person announcing the company transfer was standing on the same stage where I was supposed to graduate.

The stage.

The place I had imagined for months.

The place where I was supposed to hear my name.

The place where my father was supposed to smile proudly.

They had turned it into a battlefield.

Dad grabbed his phone immediately.

“I need to call the board.””

He walked toward the kitchen, already dialing.

Vanessa remained frozen near the couch.

Brianna was still staring at the open doorway where Lily had left.

She looked smaller somehow.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

Just lost.

I watched her carefully.

“You knew she was using you?””

Her eyes lifted.

“I didn’t.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I didn’t say anything.

And after a few seconds, her expression changed.

“I mean…”

She looked down.

“I thought she was helping me.””

“Helping you do what?””

Brianna swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

“You don’t know?””

She looked frustrated.

“She made it sound like you always got everything because Dad felt sorry for you.””

The words hurt.

Not because they were true.

Because I had heard versions of them before.

“She told me you were going to leave us behind,” Brianna continued.

I frowned.

“What?””

“She said once you got your inheritance, you wouldn’t care about this family.””

I stared at her.

“That’s what you believed?””

Brianna didn’t answer.

And somehow, that answer was enough.

I looked away.

All those years.

All those arguments.

All those moments where I thought Brianna hated me.

Maybe some of it came from jealousy.

But some of it came from someone feeding her a story.

A story where I was the villain.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Brianna.””

Her voice was softer than before.

“You should have told me.””

Brianna looked at her mother.

“You knew too.””

Vanessa froze.

“I knew Lily was upset.””

“No.””

Brianna shook her head.

“You knew she hated Emma.””

Vanessa looked away.

“And you let her talk to me.””

That silence was painful.

Because it was true.

Dad returned from the kitchen.

His face was serious.

“The board meeting has been delayed.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Delayed?””

He nodded.

“Someone requested an emergency review of the documents.””

I felt a small wave of relief.

“Then they know something is wrong.””

“Not yet.””

Dad sat down.

“The problem is that the documents appear legitimate.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

He looked at me.

“Because someone had access to my personal files.””

Everyone went quiet.

Vanessa looked nervous.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone didn’t just forge paperwork.””

Dad looked toward the hallway.

“They studied everything.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Lily hadn’t acted randomly.

She had planned every step.

The dress.

The messages.

The ceremony.

The company.

Everything.

“Can you stop her?”” I asked.

Dad looked at me.

“I’m going to try.””

That answer scared me.

Not because I doubted him.

Because I heard something underneath it.

Uncertainty.

My father was always the person who knew what to do.

But now he looked like someone fighting an enemy who knew all his weaknesses.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Another unknown number.

I opened it.

This time, it wasn’t a picture.

It was a video.

My hands became cold.

“Dad…”

He stepped closer.

“Don’t open it alone.””

But I already had.

The screen showed Aunt Lily.

Sitting somewhere unfamiliar.

Speaking directly into the camera.

“Emma.””

Her voice was calm.

Almost kind.

Which made it worse.

“I know you’re watching this.””

Dad’s face hardened.

“She recorded this for you.””

The video continued.

“I want you to understand something.””

Lily leaned closer.

“Your father thinks this is about money.””

She smiled.

“He’s wrong.””

My heart started beating faster.

“This is about what happened after your mother died.””

Dad went completely still.

The room changed.

I looked at him.

“What does she mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Lily continued.

“Your father has spent years telling everyone he protected you.””

Her expression became colder.

“But he never told you the whole story.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Turn it off.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Because the fear on his face told me something.

Something important.

Lily continued.

“Emma, ask your father why he really refused to let you see the trust documents.””

The video stopped.

The room went silent.

I looked at Dad.

“Why?””

He closed his eyes.

“Not now.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more.””

Everyone looked at me.

“For years, everyone has been deciding what I should know.””

I looked at Dad.

“You.””

Then at Vanessa.

“Her.””

Then toward the door.

“Lily.””

I swallowed.

“But nobody asks me what I can handle.””

Dad looked hurt.

And I hated that part of me still cared.

But I needed answers.

“Why didn’t you show me the documents?””

Dad sat down slowly.

“Because your grandfather wrote conditions.””

“What conditions?””

He hesitated.

“Your inheritance was connected to a decision.””

“What decision?””

He looked at me.

“Who you trusted.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“When your grandfather created the trust, he worried people would try to manipulate you.””

Dad looked down.

“He wanted you to learn how to recognize people’s intentions.””

I waited.

“But he also knew you were young.””

“So?””

“So he created a condition.””

My voice became quiet.

“What condition?””

Dad took a breath.

“When you turned twenty-one, you would have full control.””

“And until then?””

“I would manage everything.””

I nodded slowly.

“That still doesn’t explain why you hid it.””

Dad looked away.

“Because when your mother died…”

His voice cracked slightly.

“I promised her I would never let money become the reason people loved you.””

The room became quiet.

I understood.

I really did.

But understanding didn’t erase the pain.

“You should have trusted me with the truth.””

Dad nodded.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

“I should have.””

Before I could answer, Dad’s phone rang.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then stood.

“Are you certain?””

My heart started racing.

“What happened?””

He ended the call.

“They moved the ceremony location.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“They claimed there was a scheduling issue.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“Where?””

Dad looked at me.

“The auditorium.””

The place where graduation was supposed to happen.

The place Lily had planned.

“Why would they move it?””

Dad looked at his phone.

Then showed us the email.

A new announcement had been sent to all graduating students.

*Due to a special presentation from a major sponsor, the graduation ceremony will begin with a company announcement before student recognition.*

I felt sick.

Before student recognition.

Before my name.

Before my moment.

Dad looked at me.

“They’re using the ceremony.””

Brianna suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her face was pale.

“I know something.””

Dad stared.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Lily told me there would be a surprise.””

My heart stopped.

“What surprise?””

Brianna swallowed.

“She said Emma would never forget graduation day.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

“She said everyone would finally see who Emma really was.””

Dad grabbed his jacket.

“We’re leaving.””

I stood up.

“Where?””

“To the ceremony.””

“Dad—”

He looked at me.

“No matter what happens today, you walk across that stage.””

His voice became firm.

“Not for Lily.””

“Not for Brianna.””

“Not for anyone else.””

He handed me my graduation cap.

“For you.””

I held it tightly.

Then we walked outside.

But as we reached the car, my phone buzzed one final time.

Unknown number.

One message.

No picture.

No video.

Just five words.

*“Look under your seat before graduating.””*

I froze.

Because I had never told anyone where I was sitting.

And yet someone knew.

I slowly turned back toward the house.

Toward the people who had been lying to me.

And I realized something terrifying.

May you like

The person helping Lily…

Was still inside.
