Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Smile
The picture stayed on my father’s phone screen.
Neither of us spoke.
The boutique around us continued moving like nothing had happened.
A woman near the entrance laughed with her daughter.
A rack of dresses slowly turned in the corner.
A soft song played through the speakers.
Everything looked normal.
But my world had shifted again.
Dad zoomed in on the photo.
His face became harder to read.
“Who sent this?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
“Did you recognize the person?””
I stared at the image.
I had looked at it a dozen times already.
Brianna stood in front of my closet holding my graduation dress.
But beside her was a person I trusted.
Someone who had hugged me that same week.
Someone who had told me they were proud of me.
My stomach tightened.
“Dad…”
He looked up.
“Who is it?””
I hesitated.
I didn’t want to say the name.
Because saying it would make it real.
“It’s Aunt Lily.””
Dad went completely still.
For several seconds, he didn’t react.
Then he slowly looked back at the picture.
“My sister?””
I nodded.
“I think so.””
Dad took a deep breath.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
“No, that doesn’t make sense.””
I understood.
It didn’t make sense to me either.
Aunt Lily had always been the person who defended me.
When Vanessa became my stepmother, Lily was the one who told me I still deserved to feel loved.
When Brianna complained that I was getting too much attention, Lily told me not to shrink myself to make others comfortable.
She had been the person I trusted.
The person I thought was different.
Dad looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
The question hurt.
Not because he doubted me.
Because I was starting to doubt myself.
“I don’t know.””
My voice became quiet.
“But that looks like her.””
Dad handed the phone back to me.
“We need answers.””
Before we could leave, Claire returned with several dresses.
She immediately noticed the tension.
“Everything okay?””
Dad forced a small smile.
“Family issue.””
Claire looked at me.
Not him.
Me.
And somehow, that made me feel seen.
“Do you need a minute?””
I nodded.
“Yeah.””
She touched my shoulder gently.
“Take your time.””
Dad and I stepped outside.
The cold air hit my face.
For a while, we just stood there.
Then Dad spoke.
“When did Lily start acting differently?””
I looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“Think.””
I tried.
I thought about every conversation.
Every small moment.
Every strange comment I had ignored.
Then I remembered.
“The dinner.””
Dad frowned.
“What dinner?””
“Two weeks ago.””
I looked at him.
“She asked me about my graduation plans.””
“And?””
“She kept asking how much everything cost.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“What exactly did she ask?””
I closed my eyes.
“She asked how much my dress was. How much my shoes were. How much the ceremony tickets cost.””
Dad looked away.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t think anything of it.””
That was the worst part.
The warning signs were there.
I just didn’t recognize them.
Dad leaned against the car.
“Sometimes people don’t show you who they are all at once.””
I looked at him.
“They show you pieces.””
He nodded.
“And we convince ourselves the pieces don’t matter.””
My phone buzzed again.
Both of us looked down.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
This time, there was no picture.
Only words.
*“Ask your father why Lily really came back into your lives.””*
Dad saw it.
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
He took my phone.
Read the message again.
Then he sighed.
“I didn’t want you involved in this.””
My heart sank.
“Involved in what?””
He looked toward the street.
“I thought it was over.””
“What was over?””
He was quiet for too long.
That scared me more than anything.
“Dad.””
Finally, he said:
“Your aunt and I haven’t always had a good relationship.””
I waited.
“She disappeared from our lives years ago.””
“Why?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Because of money.””
I frowned.
“Money?””
“After your grandfather died, there was a disagreement about the family business.””
I listened carefully.
“Lily believed she deserved more than she received.””
“And you?””
“I believed she had already taken more than she earned.””
The words surprised me.
I had never heard Dad speak about family that way.
“What happened?””
“She left.””
“Just like that?””
“Yes.””
“And now she’s back?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“Six months ago.””
I remembered.
Six months ago.
That was exactly when Aunt Lily suddenly started visiting more.
Bringing gifts.
Sending messages.
Offering help.
I thought it was because she missed us.
Now I wasn’t sure.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wanted to believe she came back because she cared.””
His voice became softer.
“I wanted my daughter to have more family.””
That sentence hurt.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
I had always wanted more family too.
Maybe that was why I trusted people so easily.
Because I wanted to believe they wanted me.
A car horn sounded nearby.
Neither of us moved.
Then Dad said something that made my blood run cold.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“When Lily came back, she asked me one question.””
“What question?””
He looked directly at me.
“‘How much will Emma inherit when you’re gone?’”
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
Dad nodded.
“I thought it was a strange question.””
“What did you say?””
“I told her that was none of her business.””
My hands tightened around my phone.
“And then?””
“She laughed.””
Dad looked away.
“She said she was only curious.””
I felt sick.
Because suddenly, everything looked different.
The dress.
The picture.
The jealousy.
The sudden interest.
“What does this have to do with Brianna?””
Dad didn’t answer.
That was enough.
He knew.
I knew.
Brianna wasn’t acting alone.
The question was why.
We returned inside.
Claire had prepared a fitting room.
I tried on the first dress.
It was beautiful.
But I barely looked at myself.
My mind was somewhere else.
With a person I thought loved me.
With a family member who had been smiling while hiding something.
When I came out, Dad looked up.
His expression softened.
“That’s the one.””
I looked in the mirror.
It was elegant.
Simple.
Not the dress I saved for.
Not the dream I planned.
But maybe it could still be part of my story.
“Are you sure?””
Dad smiled.
“Your mother would have loved it.””
My eyes filled.
“You think so?””
“I know so.””
For a moment, everything felt calm.
Then Dad’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed almost immediately.
“Where?””
I watched him carefully.
“Don’t let anyone leave.””
My heart started racing.
“What happened?””
Dad ended the call.
Then he looked at me.
“It’s Vanessa.””
I froze.
“What about her?””
“She found out about the picture.””
“And?””
Dad picked up his jacket.
“She’s not denying it.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What is she saying?””
Dad looked at his phone.
Then at me.
“She says she knows exactly why Lily helped Brianna destroy your dress.””
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
Dad’s eyes met mine.
May you like
And his answer made me realize this was never about a dress.
“Because your graduation wasn’t the only thing they planned to ruin.””
