Amused

Chapter 5: The Plan Behind Graduation Day

The drive home felt longer than it should have.

Neither Dad nor I spoke much.

The city passed by outside the window, but I barely noticed any of it.

My mind kept returning to one thought.

This was never about a dress.

For months, I had believed Brianna ruined my graduation because she was jealous.

Because she wanted attention.

Because she couldn’t stand seeing me happy.

But now there was something bigger.

Something planned.

Something that involved more than one person.

Dad kept both hands on the steering wheel.

His jaw was tense.

I had known my father my entire life.

I knew his angry face.

I knew his disappointed face.

I knew his tired face after long days at work.

But I had never seen this expression before.

It wasn’t anger.

It was betrayal.

“Dad?””

He didn’t look away from the road.

“Yeah?””

“Do you believe Vanessa knew?””

The question sat between us.

Finally, he answered.

“I don’t know.””

That surprised me.

I expected him to say yes.

Or no.

But he sounded genuinely uncertain.

“She defended Brianna,” I said.

“I know.””

“She saw the dress.””

“I know.””

“She knew how important today was.””

“I know.””

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“But knowing someone made a mistake and knowing someone planned something are two different things.””

I looked down.

“Do you think she planned it?””

Dad was quiet.

Then he said:

“I think I need to hear the truth from her.””

When we arrived home, the front door was already open.

That alone made my stomach tighten.

Dad never left doors open.

Not unless something was wrong.

We walked inside.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

“Vanessa?”” Dad called.

No answer.

“Brianna?””

Still nothing.

Then a voice came from the living room.

“I’m here.””

We walked in.

Vanessa was sitting on the couch.

She looked different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Tired.

Brianna stood near the window with her arms crossed.

The moment she saw me, her expression changed.

A mix of irritation and fear.

Dad stopped in front of them.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Thomas…”

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“Not excuses.””

He placed his phone on the table.

“The picture.””

Nobody moved.

“The message.””

Still silence.

“Why did someone send me proof that Brianna planned this?””

Brianna immediately spoke.

“She didn’t.””

Dad looked at her.

“You know who sent it?””

She stopped.

That tiny pause answered more than words.

Dad noticed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

Her eyes widened.

“I’m not.””

“Brianna.””

His voice was quiet.

“Do not make this worse.””

She looked away.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Thomas, maybe we should talk privately.””

Dad turned toward her.

“No.””

She frowned.

“What?””

“If this involves my daughter, she deserves to hear it.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa swallowed.

Then she looked at me.

“I didn’t know she was going to destroy the dress.””

I stared at her.

“You knew something was going to happen?””

Her face changed.

Immediately.

A mistake.

A confession.

Dad saw it too.

“Vanessa.””

She sighed.

“I knew Brianna was upset.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked away.

“I knew she was angry about graduation.””

“Why?””

“Because she felt ignored.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe it.

“Ignored?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yes.””

“She had a birthday party last month.””

“That’s different.””

“She got a new car when she turned sixteen.””

“Emma…”

“She has designer clothes. Expensive jewelry. A room twice the size of mine.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Continue.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Brianna told me she felt like this family was always celebrating Emma.””

“And what did you say?””

“I told her she needed to stop comparing herself.””

For the first time, I hesitated.

Because that sounded reasonable.

Then Vanessa continued.

“But I also told her maybe she needed to do something to make people notice her.””

My heart dropped.

Dad stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“I didn’t mean this.””

“You encouraged her.””

“No.””

“You planted the idea.””

“I was trying to comfort her.””

Dad shook his head slowly.

“Comfort is not giving someone permission to hurt another person.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I never wanted this.””

I wanted to believe her.

I really did.

But then I remembered standing in my bedroom.

The torn dress.

The scissors.

Her words.

It’s just a dress.

“What did you think would happen?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any excuse.

Dad looked toward Brianna.

“And you.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“You knew your mother was unhappy with Emma?””

Brianna nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“You used that.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Dad’s voice was firm.

“You found someone who would protect you.””

Brianna looked angry.

“I didn’t ask her to protect me.””

“But you expected it.””

She didn’t respond.

Dad walked toward the table.

“Three days ago, you took a picture of Emma’s dress.””

Brianna crossed her arms.

“So?””

“So why?””

She shrugged.

“Because I wanted to show Lily.””

Dad froze.

I felt my stomach drop.

“Why would you show Aunt Lily?””

Brianna looked at me.

Then quickly looked away.

Dad noticed.

“Answer.””

“She asked.””

“What did she ask?””

Brianna stayed quiet.

“Brianna.””

Finally, she said:

“She asked what Emma was wearing.””

The room went cold.

Dad stared at her.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

Brianna looked frustrated.

“Because she was curious!””

“No.””

Dad shook his head.

“Lily was never curious.””

I watched him carefully.

“She was looking for something.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“Thomas…”

Dad ignored her.

“Brianna, what else did Lily ask you?””

Brianna didn’t answer.

Dad stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“She asked about the ceremony.””

“What about it?””

“She asked where Emma would be sitting.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Why?””

“She asked if Emma would have any important announcements.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“What announcements?””

Brianna looked at me.

Then at him.

“I don’t know.””

“Brianna.””

“I don’t know!””

Her voice cracked.

“I swear.””

Dad studied her.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Did Lily contact you too?””

Vanessa hesitated.

That was enough.

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa slowly reached into her purse.

She pulled out her phone.

“I didn’t think it mattered.””

Dad held out his hand.

“Give it to me.””

She did.

He opened the messages.

I watched his face as he read.

The longer he looked, the more serious he became.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He turned the phone toward me.

There was a message from Aunt Lily.

Sent two days before graduation.

*“Make sure Emma is distracted before the ceremony. I need her away from the stage area when the announcement happens.””*

My breathing stopped.

“What announcement?””

Nobody answered.

Dad scrolled further.

Another message appeared.

*“Once everyone sees what happens, she won’t be able to pretend she belongs anymore.””*

My hands went cold.

Dad slowly lowered the phone.

And then he said the words that made everyone in the room realize the truth.

“They weren’t trying to ruin her dress.””

He looked at me.

“They were trying to ruin her future.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A familiar voice came from the hallway.

“Looks like you finally found out.””

My blood ran cold.

Aunt Lily stepped into the room.

Smiling.

Holding a folder in her hand.

May you like

And she said:

“Now let’s talk about what Emma was never supposed to discover.””
