Amused

Chapter 3: The Message She Couldn't Erase

Nobody moved.

The room felt smaller than it had a few seconds earlier.

Dad stood near the doorway, holding his phone in one hand.

Brianna stared at him.

For the first time since I had walked into that room and found my dress destroyed, she looked completely unprepared.

“What picture?”” Vanessa asked quickly.

Dad didn’t answer her.

His eyes stayed on Brianna.

“Three days ago.””

His voice was quiet.

“Someone took a picture of my daughter’s dress before it was cut.””

Brianna’s lips parted.

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

Dad looked at his phone again.

“It means someone knew this was going to happen.””

She shook her head.

“No. You’re misunderstanding.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She laughed nervously.

“You’re acting like I committed some crime.””

Dad’s expression didn’t change.

“I’m acting like I want the truth.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Who sent you the picture?””

Dad looked at her.

“I’ll answer that after Brianna does.””

Brianna crossed her arms.

“I don’t know what you want me to say.””

“The truth.””

“I already told you.””

“No.””

Dad’s voice became sharper.

“You told me the excuse.””

The silence afterward was painful.

I looked at Brianna.

A few minutes earlier, she had stood there holding scissors and smiling.

Now she looked like someone searching for an escape.

Dad turned the phone screen toward us.

“I received this from an unknown number.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

Dad read it aloud.

“‘You should know what your daughter did before she destroys someone else’s life.’”

My stomach dropped.

Brianna’s eyes widened.

“Who sent that?””

Dad looked at her.

“That’s what I’m asking.””

Nobody spoke.

The words hung in the air.

Someone had known.

Someone had watched.

Someone had taken a picture before my dress was even destroyed.

Brianna suddenly looked angry.

“This is ridiculous.””

She grabbed her phone from her pocket.

“I’ll prove it.””

Dad raised an eyebrow.

“How?””

“I’ll show you I didn’t send anything.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She stopped.

For a moment, I saw panic flash across her face.

Only for a moment.

Then it disappeared.

“I don’t know who sent that.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

His calmness made her uncomfortable.

“Okay?””

“Yes.””

He placed his phone on the table.

“Then we’ll figure it out.””

Vanessa sighed.

“This is becoming dramatic again.””

Dad turned toward her.

“Dramatic?””

“Yes.””

She gestured toward the phone.

“We’re turning a family argument into some investigation.””

Dad stared at her.

“A family argument?””

His voice was almost a whisper.

“My daughter’s personal property was destroyed. Someone intentionally recorded it. And you’re calling that an argument?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I’m just saying we should handle this privately.””

“We should.””

Dad nodded.

“And privately means finding out the truth.””

Brianna walked toward the door.

“I’m done with this.””

Dad stepped slightly to the side.

Not blocking her.

Just making it clear she wasn’t leaving.

“Sit down.””

She froze.

“I don’t have to.””

“No.””

Dad looked at her.

“You don’t.””

His words surprised all of us.

Then he continued.

“But if you walk away right now, you’re making a choice.””

Brianna frowned.

“What choice?””

“The choice to protect yourself instead of admitting what you did.””

Her face tightened.

“I already said I cut the dress.””

“Yes.””

Dad nodded.

“You admitted the easiest part.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?”” Brianna asked.

Dad looked at the damaged dress.

“It means cutting fabric is simple.””

He looked back at her.

“But planning to hurt someone is different.””

Brianna’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know that I planned anything.””

Dad picked up his phone again.

“You’re right.””

He paused.

“I don’t.””

Hope returned to her face.

For half a second.

Then Dad continued.

“Which is why we’re going to look.””

He turned toward me.

“Your graduation starts in two hours?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Go get ready.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“But…”

He softened slightly.

“You have worked too hard to let this ruin your day.””

My eyes burned.

I looked at the destroyed dress.

“I don’t have anything to wear.””

Dad glanced at the clock.

“Then we’ll solve that.””

Brianna laughed quietly.

“You’re really going to buy her another dress?””

Dad looked at her.

“No.””

The smile faded from her face.

“Then what?””

“I’m going to make sure she gets what she earned.””

I didn’t understand.

Neither did Brianna.

Dad picked up his keys.

“Come with me.””

“Where?””

“You’ll see.””

As I followed him out of the room, I heard Vanessa whisper to Brianna.

“This has gone too far.””

Brianna answered quietly.

“He’s choosing her again.””

I stopped walking.

Not because I was hurt.

Because for the first time, I realized something.

Brianna truly believed fairness was the same thing as losing.

Outside, the morning air was cold.

Dad opened the car door for me.

I sat down silently.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

The city moved around us.

People walked with coffee cups.

Cars rushed through intersections.

Everyone else was living a normal morning.

Mine had completely changed.

Finally, Dad spoke.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not seeing it sooner.””

I looked out the window.

“Seeing what?””

He gripped the steering wheel.

“That you were trying so hard to keep everyone happy that you stopped telling people when they hurt you.””

I swallowed.

“I didn’t want to cause problems.””

Dad sighed.

“You weren’t causing problems.””

He glanced at me.

“You were surviving them.””

I looked down at my hands.

“I thought maybe if I was nicer to Brianna…”

“You could make her stop?””

I nodded.

Dad was quiet.

Then he said something I would remember for years.

“You cannot love someone into respecting you.””

The words stayed with me.

We drove to a small boutique downtown.

It was the place my mother used to take me when I was younger.

I hadn’t been there in years.

Dad walked inside.

A woman behind the counter looked up.

Her face immediately changed.

“Thomas?””

Dad smiled sadly.

“Hi, Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Oh my goodness.””

She walked around the counter.

“You must be Emma.””

I nodded.

“How do you know my name?””

She smiled.

“Because your mother talked about you every single day.””

My chest tightened.

Dad looked away for a second.

Like he was trying to hide his emotion.

Claire looked between us.

“What happened?””

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“She needs a dress for graduation.””

Claire smiled.

“Of course.””

She started walking toward the back.

Then she stopped.

“But why does it look like there’s a story?””

Dad exchanged a glance with me.

There was.

A very long one.

But before I could explain, my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A new message.

Unknown number.

My heart stopped.

There was a picture attached.

I opened it.

It was Brianna.

Not from today.

From three nights earlier.

She was standing in front of my closet.

Holding my dress.

But she wasn’t alone.

Someone else was in the picture.

Someone I never expected.

Below the photo was a message.

*“Your father thinks he knows everything. He doesn’t know the worst part yet.””*

I looked at Dad.

He immediately noticed my face.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He looked at the picture.

And for the first time that morning…

My father looked afraid.

May you like

Because the person standing beside Brianna in that photo was not Vanessa.

It was someone from my own family who had been pretending to help me all along.
