Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Buried
The picture on my phone destroyed the last bit of certainty I had left.
Isabella.
Alive.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Not a voice from the past.
Alive.
The hospital room in the photo was unmistakable.
The pale walls.
The machines beside the bed.
The small window in the corner.
I had spent three years believing that room was where my wife had taken her final breath.
But she wasn’t alone.
Someone was standing beside her.
Holding her hand.
My mother.
I looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching me.
They knew something had changed.
They could see it on my face.
“Alessandro?””
My mother’s voice shook.
I turned the phone toward her.
The color drained from her face.
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled.
“Alessandro…”
“You knew.””
I stepped closer.
“You knew Isabella was alive.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was an answer.
My whole body felt numb.
“How long?””
My mother looked down.
“Three years.””
The words hit harder than any confession.
Three years.
Three years of mourning.
Three years of telling Livia that Mommy was watching over her.
Three years of standing in front of a grave that wasn’t even hers.
I couldn’t understand.
I didn’t want to understand.
“Why?””
My voice cracked.
“Why would you let me believe my wife was dead?””
My mother started crying.
“I was protecting you.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“Everyone says that.””
I looked around the hallway.
“Everyone has an excuse.””
Bianca looked away.
Daniel stayed silent.
Victor lowered his head.
Nobody had clean hands.
My mother stepped toward me.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
“No.””
Her voice became desperate.
“You don’t know what Isabella discovered.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at Livia.
Then back at me.
“She discovered someone was trying to destroy our family.””
I stared at her.
“Victor?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
The hallway became colder.
“Then who?””
My mother hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me.
Because after everything I had learned, I knew hesitation meant there was another secret waiting.
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father?””
My father had died years before Isabella.
He had always been the person I admired most.
The man who taught me honesty.
Responsibility.
Honor.
“No.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I wanted to believe it wasn’t true.””
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Dad is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could he be involved?””
My mother looked at Daniel.
“Because the things he started continued after he was gone.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That’s why Isabella was afraid.””
I turned to him.
“You knew?””
“Some of it.””
“You knew my father was involved?””
“I suspected.””
Anger surged.
“And you said nothing?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Because Isabella made me promise.””
The words stopped me.
“She trusted you?””
Daniel looked down.
“She was my sister.””
Despite everything, I saw pain in his face.
Real pain.
Not manipulation.
“I spent years trying to undo what my family did,” he continued.
“Isabella was the only person who believed I could.””
I looked back at my mother.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
My heart started pounding.
“Where is Isabella?””
My mother wiped her tears.
“She’s alive.””
“I know that.””
“Alessandro…”
“Where is my wife?””
She looked away.
And I knew.
She knew.
“Mom.””
Her voice trembled.
“She asked me not to tell you.””
I froze.
“She asked you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she thought telling you would put you in danger.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My mother stepped closer.
“She wasn’t hiding because she didn’t love you.””
“Then why?””
“Because she believed someone would use you to find her.””
I looked at Bianca.
At Daniel.
At Victor.
Everyone had been chasing pieces of the same puzzle.
But nobody had told me the whole picture.
“What happened that night?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“The night everyone thought Isabella died?””
“Yes.””
She took a breath.
“Isabella was attacked.””
My hands tightened.
“By who?””
“We don’t know.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“We know.””
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at Victor.
“It was someone working for your father.””
Victor’s face darkened.
“That’s not proven.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“But you know it’s true.””
Victor didn’t answer.
I looked between them.
“You all knew?””
“No,” my mother said quickly.
“I only knew Isabella survived.””
“Who helped her?””
My mother looked at the floor.
“I did.””
The confession was almost a whisper.
“You helped her disappear.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she begged me.””
I shook my head.
“I was her husband.””
“I know.””
“She was my daughter’s mother.””
“I know.””
“Then how could you?””
My mother cried silently.
“Because Isabella told me something.””
“What?””
“She said if you knew she was alive, you would stop protecting yourself.””
That sounded exactly like me.
If Isabella had appeared in front of me three years ago, I would have abandoned everything.
I would have hunted down whoever hurt her.
I would have walked straight into danger.
But that didn’t make the betrayal hurt less.
“Where is she now?””
My mother looked toward the exit.
“She’s close.””
My heart stopped.
“Close?””
“She came here.””
“What?””
My mother nodded.
“She knew today would reveal everything.””
A sudden sound came from behind us.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
The sound came from the small table near the office door.
A phone nobody had noticed before.
Daniel walked toward it.
His expression changed when he saw the screen.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He picked up the phone.
The screen showed a name.
*Isabella.*
My breath caught.
Daniel answered.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then his face changed.
Fear.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then he handed me the phone.
I couldn’t move.
My hand shook as I took it.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a voice.
A voice I had dreamed of hearing.
A voice I had spent years trying to forget because remembering hurt too much.
“Alessandro.””
My knees almost gave out.
“Isabella?””
A quiet sob came through the phone.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The world disappeared.
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
My voice broke.
“Why did you leave me?””
There was silence.
Then she whispered:
“Because the person who tried to kill me was someone standing beside you.””
I looked around the hallway.
Everyone froze.
“Who?””
Her breathing changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Alessandro…”
“Tell me.””
“I don’t have much time.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who tried to kill you?””
A pause.
Then Isabella whispered:
“It wasn’t your father.””
My heart stopped.
“It wasn’t Victor.””
The hallway went silent.
“It was someone you trusted after I was gone.””
My eyes moved slowly.
Toward the person I had least expected.
Someone who had been beside me through every moment of pain.
Someone who had raised Livia with me.
Someone who had never left my side.
Then Isabella said the name.
May you like
And everything shattered.
“It was Rosalie.””
