Amused

Chapter 6: The Man Hidden in the Shadows

The name echoed through the room.

Daniel.

A name that had followed us through every secret, every warning, every unanswered question.

But hearing it from my daughter’s mouth changed everything.

Livia wasn’t repeating something she had overheard from adults.

She was remembering something.

I knelt in front of her.

“Sweetheart, look at me.””

Her eyes lifted slowly.

“When did you see him?””

She hugged her doll tighter.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s okay. Take your time.””

Her lower lip trembled.

“He came to the house.””

The room went cold.

My first thought was impossible.

“No.””

Livia looked confused.

“No?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“When did he come to our house?””

“Before the wedding.””

I glanced at Bianca.

She looked pale.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked.

Livia looked down.

“Because Bianca told me not to.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did she say?””

Livia’s fingers squeezed the doll.

“She said grown-up problems make families disappear.””

My heart broke.

She had been carrying this fear alone.

A child.

My child.

“Livia,” I said gently, “you can always tell me anything. Even if someone tells you not to.””

She nodded.

“Okay.””

“Now tell me about Daniel.””

She looked toward Bianca.

Bianca looked away.

That bothered me.

If she was innocent, why was she avoiding this?

If she was guilty, why had she brought us this far?

Nothing made sense.

Livia took a shaky breath.

“He was outside Mommy’s room.””

My entire body froze.

“My old room?””

She nodded.

“The room with Mommy’s pictures.””

I swallowed.

The room I had kept almost untouched since Isabella died.

A place where I still kept her books.

Her favorite scarf.

The little wooden box where she stored family photos.

“When?”” I asked.

“Two nights before we came here.””

“Two nights before the wedding?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Bianca.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew a man came to my house?””

Bianca’s eyes closed briefly.

“Yes.””

The anger rose instantly.

“You knew?””

“I was trying to protect her.””

“You were protecting my daughter by keeping secrets from me?””

“I was protecting her because I knew Daniel was watching.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you would have gone after him.””

“And?””

“And you would have walked directly into his trap.””

Her voice cracked.

I stopped.

Because the worst part was that I knew she was right.

If someone threatened my daughter, I wouldn’t think.

I would act.

And Daniel might have been waiting for that.

But none of that excused the lies.

“You don’t get to decide what I know about my own family.””

Bianca looked down.

“I know.””

The answer was quiet.

Almost defeated.

Then Matteo spoke.

“Enough.””

We both turned.

He looked at Bianca.

“If Daniel is real, we need evidence.””

Bianca nodded.

“I know.””

“Where is he now?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect us to believe that?””

“Yes.””

Matteo laughed without humor.

“You have spent the entire day hiding things.””

“And I’m still here telling you the truth.””

“You’re telling us your version.””

Bianca didn’t respond.

Because he was right.

Everyone had a version.

The question was whose version matched reality.

I walked toward the laptop.

The video file from Isabella was still open.

I rewound it.

I watched my wife’s face again.

The fear in her eyes.

The urgency.

The warning.

But now there was something I noticed.

Something I had missed before.

Behind Isabella, on the bookshelf, was a photograph.

A small framed picture.

I stood closer to the screen.

“Wait.””

Matteo looked at me.

“What?””

I paused the video.

“Zoom in.””

He leaned toward the laptop.

The image became blurry.

But clear enough.

A photograph of two children.

A young Isabella.

And a boy beside her.

The boy had a scar above his eyebrow.

I stared at it.

“Daniel.””

Bianca nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“He was really her brother.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Bianca looked at the screen.

“Because she was ashamed.””

“Of him?””

“Of what happened.””

I turned.

“What happened?””

Bianca hesitated.

Then she sat down.

For the first time, she looked exhausted.

“Daniel was not always dangerous.””

Nobody spoke.

“He and Isabella were close when they were children. He protected her.””

“Then what changed?””

Bianca looked at the floor.

“Their father was abusive.””

The words hung in the air.

“Daniel tried to fight back.””

“And?””

“He went too far.””

A silence followed.

“He hurt someone.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Bianca looked at me.

“The person who controlled their father’s business.””

I felt a chill.

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“No.””

The answer confused me.

“Then who?””

Bianca looked at the photograph.

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“What?””

Matteo stared at her.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

The company.

The family.

The past.

Everything was connected.

“My grandfather knew Isabella’s family?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew this?””

Bianca nodded.

“I learned after I met Isabella.””

“How?””

“She told me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at Matteo.

“Did you know?””

He slowly shook his head.

“No.””

For years, we thought we knew our family history.

Apparently, we only knew the parts people wanted us to know.

“Why would my grandfather be involved?””

Bianca whispered:

“Because Daniel believed your family destroyed his.””

My stomach tightened.

“And now he wants revenge.””

“Yes.””

“Against me?””

“Against everyone.””

A loud crash suddenly came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A second later, the venue lights went out.

The room fell into darkness.

Someone screamed in the hallway.

My first instinct was immediate.

“Livia.””

I moved.

I found her hand.

“Daddy.””

“I’m here.””

Emergency lights flickered on after a few seconds.

The room was dim.

Confused voices filled the venue.

Then Matteo looked toward the window.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

He walked closer.

I followed.

On the outside of the glass, carved into the foggy surface, were three words.

Three words written from the outside.

*YOU FOUND ME.*

My blood ran cold.

Someone had been standing there.

Watching us.

Bianca stepped back.

“No.””

I turned to her.

“You know what this means?””

Her face had lost all color.

“He’s here.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the window.

And whispered:

“Daniel.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone walking toward the office.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then the door handle began to turn.

Livia grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I pulled her behind me.

The door opened.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older than I expected.

Calm.

Almost familiar.

His eyes moved across the room.

Then stopped on me.

He smiled.

“Alessandro.””

My body went cold.

Because I had never met this man.

But he looked at me like we had known each other our entire lives.

“I’m sorry I missed the ceremony.””

He stepped inside.

“But I needed to make sure you learned the truth before you married my sister’s enemy.””

My eyes widened.

“Your sister?””

The man smiled.

“Isabella.””

Then he looked at Bianca.

And his expression changed.

“You failed.””

Bianca went pale.

Daniel took another step forward.

“You were supposed to destroy him before he found the letter.””

The room went silent.

Because in that moment, I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Bianca might have been hiding secrets.

But she wasn’t the only one playing a game.
