Amused

Chapter 10: The Family I Chose After the Truth

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

For a moment, I thought I had heard wrong.

Rosalie.

The woman who had held Livia after Isabella died.

The woman who had sat beside me during endless nights when I couldn’t sleep.

The woman who had protected my daughter.

The woman who had stood in front of Bianca and told her to stop.

Rosalie.

“No.””

The word came out before I could think.

Across the hallway, Rosalie’s face changed.

She heard the name.

She knew.

“Alessandro…”

I stared at her.

The phone was still against my ear.

“Isabella.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me I heard wrong.””

Silence.

Then Isabella whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

I looked at Rosalie.

“No.””

She took a step toward me.

“Alessandro, please.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

The woman who had comforted my daughter for three years suddenly looked like a stranger.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

How much of my life had been real?

How many moments had been carefully designed?

How many times had I trusted the wrong person?

“Tell me everything,” I said into the phone.

Isabella took a shaky breath.

“Rosalie wasn’t just Livia’s nanny.””

Rosalie closed her eyes.

“She was someone I trusted before I disappeared.””

The hallway was silent.

“She knew about Daniel. She knew about Victor. She knew about my investigation.””

I looked at Rosalie.

“Why?””

Isabella continued.

“Because she helped me uncover the truth.””

My anger paused.

“What?””

Rosalie looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Alessandro…”

I turned away from her.

“Not yet.””

I needed to hear Isabella.

“She helped you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you say she tried to kill you?””

“Because she did.””

The answer was immediate.

Cold.

Certain.

I froze.

“How?””

Isabella’s voice became quieter.

“Rosalie found out I planned to expose everyone involved.””

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

“Victor?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel?””

“No.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching carefully.

“Then who?””

A long silence followed.

Then Isabella said:

“The person who paid Rosalie.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

“Bianca.””

Everyone reacted.

Bianca stepped back.

“No.””

The word escaped her.

I looked at her.

“You?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No, Alessandro.””

But Isabella continued.

“Bianca was sent to you because of Daniel.””

My mind raced.

“She said that.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you say she paid Rosalie?””

“Because Bianca was never the person controlling everything.””

I stared at her.

“Then who was?””

The phone went silent.

For a few seconds, I heard only Isabella breathing.

Then:

“Your mother.””

The entire hallway froze.

My mother looked like the world had collapsed beneath her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My mother whispered my name.

“Alessandro…”

“Tell me she’s wrong.””

Nobody spoke.

That silence answered me.

My entire life.

My family.

Everything.

I looked at my mother.

“You knew?””

She cried.

“I knew some of it.””

“Some?””

“I knew your father had secrets.””

“And you helped hide them?””

“No.””

“Then why did Isabella disappear?””

My mother looked broken.

“Because I was trying to save you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Isabella’s voice came through the phone.

“Alessandro, listen to me.””

I closed my eyes.

“She didn’t plan this.””

I opened them.

“What?””

“Your mother made one terrible choice.””

My mother looked down.

“She was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Isabella’s voice softened.

“Of losing you.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like something my mother would do.

Not because she was cruel.

Because she loved too much.

But love could still cause damage.

“Rosalie attacked you?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Rosalie.

She was crying.

“I found out Bianca was being manipulated.””

Isabella continued.

“Bianca wasn’t the mastermind. She was a scared young woman trapped by Daniel’s threats.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He used my anger.””

Bianca whispered.

“He used my guilt.””

I looked at her.

“And the wedding?””

Bianca looked away.

“I wanted to prove I could fix what I started.””

“You cut my daughter’s hair.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“You scared her.””

“I know.””

“And you lied.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I thought if I could get close to you, I could protect you.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t protect someone by hurting them.””

She lowered her head.

“I know.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then Isabella spoke again.

“Alessandro.””

“Yes?””

“There is one more thing.””

I tightened my grip.

“What?””

“Rosalie didn’t act alone.””

My eyes moved back to Rosalie.

“Who helped her?””

Isabella answered:

“Someone inside the venue.””

Everyone looked around.

The wedding staff.

The guests.

The people who had been watching.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Again.

A scream came from the hallway.

But this time, Daniel moved first.

“Down!””

A loud crash followed.

Glass shattered.

I pulled Livia close.

When the emergency lights returned, everyone was on the floor.

And Rosalie was gone.

I ran toward the door.

“Rosalie!””

No answer.

Daniel followed.

“She’s escaping.””

We moved through the service hallway.

The same hallway where my wedding decorations were stored.

The same hallway where hours earlier I had believed I was beginning a new life.

Now it was where I chased the final piece of the truth.

We found Rosalie near the exit.

She stopped when she saw me.

Her face was covered in tears.

“I’m sorry.””

I stood there.

“You tried to kill my wife.””

Her expression broke.

“I never wanted to.””

“But you did.””

She looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone was scared.””

“I was protecting Livia.””

My anger exploded.

“You don’t get to say her name.””

Rosalie cried.

“She was going to be taken away.””

“By who?””

She looked behind me.

At someone.

I turned.

My mother stood there.

And beside her was Victor.

The final betrayal.

“Mom?””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

Victor stepped forward.

“It wasn’t her.””

I looked at him.

“Then explain.””

Victor sighed.

“The person controlling Rosalie wasn’t your mother.””

“Then who?””

A slow clap echoed behind us.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the end of the hallway.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

But Victor did.

His face went pale.

“No.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You.””

The man smiled.

“Everyone spent years looking at the wrong people.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

“I’m the reason Isabella had to disappear.””

My blood ran cold.

Victor whispered his name.

“The board chairman.””

The man smiled.

“The person who has been running your company from the shadows.””

Everything connected.

The threats.

The secrets.

The lies.

The old family wounds.

The man stepped forward.

“I didn’t need to destroy Alessandro.””

He smiled.

“I only needed to make him distrust everyone.””

I looked around.

At Bianca.

At Daniel.

At my mother.

At Rosalie.

All the broken pieces of my life.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

A familiar voice.

“Enough.””

I turned.

Isabella stood there.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

For three years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But when I saw her standing in front of me, all I felt was relief.

Livia saw her.

And froze.

“Mommy?””

Isabella’s face broke.

She dropped to her knees.

“Livia.””

My daughter ran.

And for the first time in three years, a family that had been broken by secrets became whole again.

I watched them hold each other.

And I understood something.

The truth had hurt.

It had destroyed the perfect story I thought I was living.

But maybe perfect stories were never real.

Real families were messy.

They made mistakes.

They hid things.

They broke.

But they could also choose to heal.

Months later, the wedding never happened.

Not the one planned that day.

Not with the flowers.

Not with the promises.

Instead, we had a different kind of ceremony.

A small one.

Just family.

No secrets.

No lies.

Isabella stood beside me.

Livia held both our hands.

And when she looked at me, she smiled.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Does this mean everything is okay now?””

I looked at the people around us.

The people who stayed.

The people who apologized.

The people who had to earn forgiveness.

Then I looked at my daughter.

“Not everything.””

She tilted her head.

“But we’re trying.””

She smiled.

And that was enough.

Because the greatest lesson I learned was not about betrayal.

It was not about revenge.

It was not about secrets hidden in the dark.

It was this:

May you like

A family isn’t built by people who never hurt each other.

A family is built by the people who choose, after the truth comes out, to stop running away.
