Chapter 8: The Secret Daniel Buried
I stared at the message until the words blurred.
His first wife.
Those three words felt impossible.
Daniel had never mentioned another marriage.
Not once.
Not during twelve years together.
Not during late-night conversations.
Not when we talked about our past.
I slowly looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He knew.
The moment he saw my face, he knew.
“Emma…”
“Were you married before me?””
Silence.
The silence hurt more than the answer.
“Yes.””
I felt like the room tilted.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“Losing you.””
I stood.
“So you lied?””
“No.””
“You hid an entire marriage.””
He looked down.
“I was seventeen.””
I froze.
“What?””
“My first marriage wasn’t what you think.””
I didn’t understand.
Daniel reached for my hand.
I hesitated.
But I let him hold it.
“Her name was Rachel.””
“What happened?””
He swallowed.
“She disappeared.””
The room went silent.
“Disappeared?””
Daniel nodded.
“Everyone thought she left.””
“But you?””
“I never believed that.””
A horrible thought entered my mind.
“Is she connected to this?””
Daniel looked at Laura.
Laura nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My heart raced.
“How?””
Laura spoke softly.
“Rachel discovered the same thing Daniel did.””
The pieces began connecting.
“My father?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I stepped away.
“No.””
I didn’t want to believe it.
My father had been absent from my life for years.
But not because he was innocent.
Because he was hiding.
Later that day, I went to locker 214.
The storage facility was abandoned.
Rain hit the metal roof as I inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a small box.
Nothing else.
I opened it.
There were photographs.
A hard drive.
And a letter.
My name was written on the front.
Emma.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
“Emma,
If you are reading this, I failed to protect you.””
I stopped breathing.
Daniel’s handwriting.
“Everything I discovered started with Rachel.””
I looked at the photographs.
The first one showed Daniel and Rachel.
The second showed my father.
The third showed Mark.
Together.
A family picture of people who had destroyed mine.
The letter continued.
“Rachel wasn’t my enemy. She was trying to expose them.””
A sound behind me made me turn.
Someone was standing in the doorway.
I froze.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then a voice.
“Emma.””
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew that voice.
My father.
The man I hadn’t seen in five years.
He stepped into the storage room.
Older.
Tired.
But still familiar.
“Dad?””
He looked at the box.
“You found it.””
I backed away.
“Did you kill Rachel?””
His face broke.
“No.””
“Did you try to kill Daniel?””
“No.””
“Then why are you here?””
He looked at the letter in my hand.
“Because Daniel made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
My father looked directly at me.
“He trusted the wrong person.””
I gripped the box.
“Who?””
My father whispered:
“The person who planned everything.””
My phone suddenly rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Daniel?””
His voice was urgent.
“Emma, where are you?””
“At the storage locker.””
A pause.
Then panic.
“Leave.””
“What?””
“Leave now.””
“Why?””
His voice shook.
“Because Mark isn’t the person you should be afraid of.””
The door behind my father slowly opened.
Someone else entered.
And Daniel whispered:
“Emma…”
“Who is there?””
A long silence.
May you like
Then:
“The person standing behind you.””
