Chapter 4: The Brother’s Lie
Daniel opened his eyes for only thirty seconds.
That was all.
Thirty seconds that changed everything.
I entered the room slowly.
His face was pale.
His lips were dry.
But his eyes…
His eyes were the same.
The eyes I had looked into every morning for twelve years.
“Daniel?””
His eyes moved toward me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then his lips moved.
“Emma.””
I broke.
I grabbed his hand.
“Oh my God.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“You’re here.””
He tried to smile.
But pain crossed his face.
“Maya?””
I laughed and cried at the same time.
“She’s here.””
His eyes closed briefly.
“Good.””
Then his expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Emma…”
“Yes?””
“Don’t let Mark near her.””
The room became cold.
I leaned closer.
“Why?””
Daniel struggled to speak.
“He…”
The machines beside him started beeping faster.
A nurse rushed in.
“Mrs. Carter, please step back.””
I didn’t want to leave.
“Daniel!””
His eyes stayed locked on mine.
“Trust nobody.””
Then he lost consciousness again.
The next morning, the police arrived.
They had questions.
Lots of them.
The funeral home had reported an unusual situation.
A man who was declared dead had been transported for burial while still alive.
That was not just a mistake.
That was a crime.
Detective Harris sat across from me.
“Mrs. Carter, we need to understand your husband’s condition before the accident.””
“What do you mean?””
“Was he under stress?””
I frowned.
“No.””
“Any conflicts?””
I hesitated.
Then I remembered the note.
Mark.
The detective noticed my silence.
“Something?””
I looked down.
“My husband warned me about his brother.””
The detective wrote something.
“What exactly did he say?””
“He said not to trust him.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
The detective closed his notebook.
“Find out.””
That afternoon, I searched through Daniel’s belongings.
I checked his phone.
Most things were ordinary.
Pictures of Maya.
Work emails.
Messages from friends.
Then I found a hidden folder.
Password protected.
I almost gave up.
Then I remembered Maya’s words.
The truth is hidden where nobody looks.
I looked at Daniel’s old watch.
The back cover had a tiny engraving.
A date.
Our anniversary.
I typed it.
The folder opened.
Inside were videos.
Dozens of them.
I clicked the newest one.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
He looked nervous.
Like someone who knew he was being watched.
“If you’re seeing this,” he said quietly, “something happened.””
I covered my mouth.
Daniel continued.
“I found out what Mark has been doing.””
My heart stopped.
The video shook slightly.
Then Daniel whispered the words that changed everything.
“He wasn’t trying to hurt me.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was trying to erase me.””
