Amused

Chapter 5: The Truth Beneath the Accident

I watched Daniel’s video three times.

Then ten.

Each time, I hoped I had misunderstood.

I hadn’t.

Daniel had discovered something about Mark.

Something dangerous.

The next video started automatically.

Daniel was sitting in his car.

His voice was low.

“Mark has been stealing from the company.””

I froze.

Daniel and Mark owned a small construction business together.

For years, they had worked side by side.

“They’ve been moving money through fake accounts,” Daniel continued.

“I found proof.””

I leaned closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The video continued.

“Because Mark is my brother. I wanted to believe there was an explanation.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“But then he found out I knew.””

The screen went black.

My hands trembled.

That was when I heard the door behind me.

I turned.

Mark stood there.

My blood went cold.

“How long have you been watching?””

He looked at the laptop.

Then at me.

“Long enough.””

I slowly stood.

“You broke into my house?””

“No.””

“Then how did you get in?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

“You knew about the videos.””

Mark’s expression changed.

“You don’t understand what you found.””

“I understand my husband almost died.””

His face tightened.

“I never wanted Daniel dead.””

“Then why was he almost buried?””

Mark stepped forward.

“Because things got out of control.””

I backed away.

“You knew he was alive.””

“No.””

“You knew.””

His silence was confirmation.

I reached for my phone.

Mark noticed.

“Emma.””

I froze.

His voice softened.

“I’m asking you to listen.””

“I listened enough.””

“You have no idea what Daniel was involved in.””

I stared at him.

“My husband was trying to protect us.””

Mark laughed bitterly.

“Your husband was trying to destroy everything.””

The front door suddenly opened.

A small voice called out.

“Mommy?””

My heart dropped.

Maya.

She stood in the hallway holding her backpack.

Behind her was our neighbor, Mrs. Wilson.

I rushed toward her.

“Maya!””

Mark stepped back.

His face changed when he saw her.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because for the first time…

I saw fear in Mark’s eyes.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Maya,” I whispered.

She looked at Mark.

Then at me.

“Mommy?””

“What?””

She pointed at him.

“Why does Uncle Mark have Daddy’s secret key?””

I looked down.

Mark’s hand.

He was holding something.

A small silver key.

The same kind Daniel always kept on his chain.

My stomach turned.

“Where did you get that?””

Mark didn’t answer.

Maya’s voice became quiet.

“Daddy told me never to give it to him.””

The room went completely still.

Because suddenly I understood.

Daniel hadn’t just left a warning.

He had left a plan.

And Maya…

May you like

My six-year-old daughter…

was the only person who knew where it was hidden.
