Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew the Secret
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not even for a minute.
Too many questions were screaming inside my head.
Who was Laura Bennett?
Why did she know about Daniel?
Why was everyone acting like my husband had uncovered something bigger than stolen money?
And why did my daughter know more than I did?
At six in the morning, I left Maya with my mother and drove straight to the hospital.
Daniel was awake.
Barely.
But awake.
When I entered his room, his eyes opened immediately.
“Emma.””
I rushed to his side.
“You knew.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“You knew Mark was dangerous.””
Daniel looked away.
That hurt more than anger would have.
“You knew.””
“Emma—”
“You let me stand beside your brother at your funeral.””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By keeping me in the dark?””
He closed his eyes.
“I thought I could fix it.””
I laughed sadly.
“Daniel, you almost got buried.””
The pain in his expression told me he understood.
“I know.””
I sat down.
“Tell me everything.””
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“Mark wasn’t working alone.””
The room felt colder.
“Who else?””
Daniel looked at the door.
As if he was afraid someone was listening.
“There was someone above him.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
Daniel swallowed.
“But I know why they wanted me gone.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I found the original records.””
“What records?””
“The money wasn’t stolen from the company.””
I frowned.
“Then where did it come from?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“They were laundering money through the company.””
I felt sick.
“Mark was helping criminals?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
A knock interrupted us.
A nurse entered.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“There’s someone here asking for you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“Laura Bennett.””
I turned.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Don’t let her in.””
But it was too late.
Laura entered.
She was younger than I expected.
Maybe early forties.
Her expensive coat was soaked from rain.
She looked exhausted.
And terrified.
“Daniel.””
He stared at her.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
“I had no choice.””
I stood.
“Someone please explain what is happening.””
Laura looked at me.
“I owe you the truth.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Laura.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“She deserves to know.””
She reached into her bag and placed a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Photos.
Emails.
My hands trembled as I looked through them.
“What am I seeing?””
Laura swallowed.
“Your husband discovered a network of fake companies.””
Daniel looked down.
“He found everything.””
“And Mark?””
Laura nodded.
“Mark was one of the people involved.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“Because I was scared.””
That hurt.
Daniel was never scared.
Not of storms.
Not of losing jobs.
Not of anything.
But now I understood.
He wasn’t scared for himself.
He was scared for us.
Laura leaned closer.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She opened another document.
A photograph.
A man standing beside Mark.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized him.
I had seen him before.
At the funeral.
Sitting quietly in the back row.
Watching.
“Who is that?””
Laura whispered:
“Your husband’s business partner.””
I stared at the picture.
“No.””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Your father.””
The room disappeared.
My father.
A man I hadn’t spoken to in five years.
A man Daniel had always refused to discuss.
A man who supposedly wanted nothing to do with our family.
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“It’s not.””
Before I could speak, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
“Ask your husband what really happened to his first wife.””
I looked up.
“Daniel…”
His face changed.
And I knew.
May you like
There was another secret.
One he had never told me.
