The Custodian’s Daughter / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Emergency Vote

At 7:42 the next morning, Raymond Bennett walked into the Bennett Foundation's headquarters wearing a clean white shirt, a charcoal jacket borrowed from Daniel Whitmore, and the same polished black shoes he had worn to his daughter's graduation.

The jacket was too broad in the shoulders.

The sleeves covered half his hands.

He didn't care.

He had spent the previous night helping Jada organize the evidence. Every transfer record had been labeled. Every threatening message had been saved. Every document had been placed in a folder that Daniel's office had independently copied and secured.

The original letter from Elaine remained in Raymond's bag.

He had not slept more than two hours.

Neither had Jada.

She stood beside him in a navy dress, her braids neatly arranged, her expression calm enough to fool anyone who didn't know her.

Raymond knew her.

He could see the tension in the way she held her shoulders and the slight tremor in her fingers.

“You don't have to do this,” he told her quietly.

Jada looked at him.

“Yes, I do.””

“You've already been through enough.””

“That's exactly why I have to be there.””

She adjusted the strap of her bag.

“Yesterday, people called me a fraud because someone made an accusation. Today, I'm going to hear the truth from the people who made the decisions.””

Raymond nodded.

“Then we'll hear it together.””

They entered the conference room at 7:55.

The trustees were already seated around the long table. Richard Bennett sat at the head, with Daniel Whitmore beside him. Several financial advisers had joined by video conference.

Monica Hayes sat near the far end of the table, wearing a black suit and a silver necklace. She looked composed, but the skin beneath her eyes was swollen, as though she had spent the night awake.

Adrian Bennett sat beside her.

He was younger than Richard, perhaps in his early forties, with dark hair, an expensive watch, and the restless confidence of someone accustomed to having people make room for him.

When Raymond entered, Adrian looked him up and down.

“Is this really necessary?”” he asked.

Richard's expression hardened.

“Yes.””

Adrian leaned back.

“We're here to discuss governance, not personal disputes.””

Jada pulled out a chair.

“Then perhaps we should discuss why my scholarship was suspended.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Your scholarship is a separate administrative matter.””

“Not when the people responsible for the review are sitting at this table.””

Monica opened her folder.

“I have no intention of discussing this emotionally.””

Jada met her gaze.

“Good. Then the facts shouldn't be a problem.””

Daniel placed a stack of documents before each trustee.

“Before the vote begins, counsel requests that the board review evidence concerning unauthorized transfers from an educational account associated with Elaine Bennett.””

Adrian's expression changed.

“What transfers?””

Richard looked at him.

“The ones totaling $412,000.””

The room fell silent.

Adrian's mouth tightened.

“I have no knowledge of any unauthorized transfers.””

Daniel opened the first packet.

“These records show six payments from the foundation to Hayes Educational Consulting over an eleven-month period. The total, including the initial educational account transfer, is $412,000.””

Adrian glanced at Monica.

She kept her eyes on the table.

Daniel continued.

“The consulting company was registered to Stephen Hayes, Monica's brother. Three weeks ago, the company was dissolved, and its assets were transferred to Bennett Strategic Holdings.””

A trustee near the window leaned forward.

“Who owns Bennett Strategic Holdings?””

Daniel turned a page.

“Public filings list Adrian Bennett as its director.””

Every face turned toward Adrian.

He let out a short laugh.

“This is a gross misrepresentation. The company is a legitimate investment vehicle.””

“Then you should have no objection to providing the bank statements and records showing where the money went,” Daniel replied.

“Those are confidential business records.””

“They may also contain evidence relevant to the foundation's funds.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You don't have authority to demand private records without a proper process.””

Daniel nodded.

“Which is why we have requested the appropriate legal review.””

Richard rose.

“Adrian, did you authorize the transfer of the foundation's educational allocation to Hayes Educational Consulting?””

“No.””

“Did you know the company was receiving payments from the foundation?””

“I oversee many investments. I cannot personally review every payment.””

“You are the financial trustee.””

“And I rely on the administrative team to follow procedure.””

Richard looked toward Monica.

“Monica, did you authorize the transfers?””

She lifted her chin.

“I submitted requests for educational services. The payments were processed through standard channels.””

“What services did the company provide?””

“Consulting, program administration, and historical records management.””

“Where are the contracts?””

Monica opened her folder.

“I would need to retrieve them.””

Daniel spoke calmly.

“We requested copies yesterday. The foundation's records office has not located any signed contracts or deliverables associated with the payments.””

Monica's cheeks flushed.

“Then the records may be incomplete.””

Jada leaned forward.

“Where is the money?””

Monica looked at her.

“That question is outside the scope of this vote.””

“It's money intended for my education.””

“You have no established legal claim to those funds.””

Jada's voice sharpened.

“Then why did you transfer an account established in my mother's name?””

Monica turned toward Richard.

“Richard, I will not be interrogated by a student.””

Richard's voice was cold.

“You will answer the trustees.””

Adrian pushed his chair back.

“This meeting is becoming a circus. The motion before us concerns Richard's leadership. We should vote and allow the investigation to proceed independently.””

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“Before the board votes, I believe it should examine the access logs associated with the missing trust document.””

Adrian's face went still.

The document showed the archive entry at 6:42 p.m. the previous evening, recorded under his executive credential.

A second entry showed a file export from the same terminal.

Richard pointed to the page.

“Did you access the historical archive?””

Adrian looked around the table.

“I may have reviewed records as part of my responsibilities.””

“Did you remove or export the original trust document?””

“No.””

“Then why was your credential used?””

“Credentials can be duplicated.””

Daniel nodded.

“That possibility is under investigation. We have requested the relevant technical logs and authentication records.””

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“You're implying that I stole a document.””

“I'm presenting a record showing that your credentials were used to access it.””

“That's not proof of theft.””

“No one has said it is conclusive proof. That's why we need the audit.””

Adrian turned to the trustees.

“This is exactly why Richard should be removed. He's allowing a personal family matter to interfere with the foundation's governance. He has brought his potential daughter into confidential meetings, hired outside counsel, and exposed the organization to public scandal.””

Harold Price nodded.

“Those are serious concerns.””

Jada looked at him.

“Did you read the financial records?””

Harold hesitated.

“I have reviewed the summary.””

“Then you've seen that the money was transferred to a company connected to the people accusing me.””

“That's an allegation that needs to be investigated.””

“Exactly. So why are you voting to remove Richard before the investigation is finished?””

Harold looked uncomfortable.

“Because leadership stability is important.””

“Then why not suspend the people who controlled the transactions?””

No one answered.

Monica rose.

“This is inappropriate. Jada has no standing to question the board's decisions.””

Richard stood beside her.

“She has standing as a scholarship recipient whose funding was placed on hold without evidence. She also has a legitimate interest in understanding an educational account associated with her late mother.””

Monica's face tightened.

“You cannot establish that she is Richard's daughter.””

“Then we will establish it through the proper process,” Richard replied.

Adrian seized the opening.

“And until then, Richard has a clear conflict of interest. He is making decisions that could benefit a potential heir to his family's assets.””

Daniel opened another file.

“The foundation's bylaws require disclosure of potential conflicts. Richard disclosed the possibility of a family relationship as soon as he learned of it. The board has received no evidence that he used his position to transfer funds to Jada or to favor her scholarship application.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Not yet.””

“Speculation is not evidence,” Daniel said.

Richard looked at the trustees.

“I will recuse myself from any vote directly concerning Jada's eligibility or the distribution of any family trust assets. But I will not step aside while someone uses this foundation to intimidate witnesses and conceal financial transactions.””

He turned toward Adrian.

“If you believe I have mismanaged the organization, present evidence. If you believe I have violated the bylaws, cite the provision. But you will not remove me simply because I refuse to ignore suspicious transfers.””

Adrian's composure cracked.

“You don't understand what you're risking.””

Richard stared at him.

“Then explain it.””

Adrian said nothing.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then the conference room door opened.

A uniformed police officer entered with a woman in a gray coat.

Raymond stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“Denise!””

Denise Walker looked exhausted. Her hair was disheveled, and a bruise darkened one wrist, but she was standing on her own.

Jada rushed toward her.

“Are you okay?””

Denise nodded weakly.

“I'm shaken. But I'm okay.””

The officer raised a hand.

“Ms. Walker has agreed to provide a statement regarding the events of the past twenty-four hours. She is not here to make accusations without evidence. We have asked the board to preserve all relevant records.””

Raymond approached her.

“What happened?””

Denise glanced toward Monica and Adrian.

“I left the foundation yesterday after receiving a message from someone claiming to be an investigator. They told me my records had been compromised and that I needed to meet them to protect the evidence.””

“Who?””

“I thought it was someone from the legal department. The person had details about my work and knew about the transaction records.””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“Did you recognize the person?””

“Not at first. When I arrived, I realized the vehicle belonged to Stephen Hayes.””

Monica stood abruptly.

“My brother had nothing to do with this.””

Denise flinched at the sound of her voice.

The officer stepped between them.

“Please remain seated.””

Denise continued.

“Stephen told me I was making a mistake. He said the foundation could lose everything if the records became public. He asked me to hand over the copies I had taken.””

“Did you?”” Raymond asked.

“No. I told him I had already provided them to counsel.””

Stephen became angry, Denise said. He took her laptop and phone and drove her to a house outside the city, insisting she needed time to reconsider her position.

She had been frightened, but she had managed to send a brief message to a friend using a spare phone she found in the house. The friend contacted the police.

“When officers arrived,” Denise continued, “Stephen had left. They found me inside and brought me in for questioning.””

Richard looked at the police officer.

“Has Stephen been located?””

“Officers are attempting to contact him. We are gathering evidence and will determine the appropriate next steps.””

Adrian rose.

“This is a private dispute between Denise and Stephen Hayes. It has nothing to do with the board's vote.””

Denise turned toward him.

“Then why did Stephen tell me the money was transferred because you had promised to protect him?””

The room erupted in overlapping voices.

Adrian's face went white.

Monica gripped the edge of the table.

Denise took a breath.

“He said the consulting company was only a temporary holding account. He said the money would be moved again after the scholarship issue was resolved. He also said the original trust document had to disappear before anyone could prove where the money came from.””

Adrian stared at her.

“That's a lie.””

Denise shook her head.

“I saved a voice message he sent me afterward. He told me not to involve Richard because Richard would never approve the transfer.””

Daniel looked at the officer.

“Has the recording been preserved?””

“Yes. We have a copy, and investigators will verify its authenticity.””

Adrian turned toward Monica.

“You told me the account had been settled.””

Monica's head snapped toward him.

“Don't you dare.””

The room went silent.

Adrian realized what he had said.

He looked around at the trustees, then toward the police officer.

“I meant the administrative matter.””

Monica stood.

“You told me the transfers were covered by your approval.””

“You submitted the paperwork!””

“You said the company was legitimate!””

“And you said the original document was worthless!””

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

The argument had exposed more than either of them intended.

Daniel rose.

“Trustees, I recommend that we immediately suspend Monica's and Adrian's access to foundation systems pending an independent investigation. I also recommend that the proposed motion to remove Richard be tabled until the financial review is complete.””

Harold Price looked at the other trustees.

“I second the recommendation.””

The board voted.

Five trustees supported the suspension of Monica's and Adrian's access. Two abstained. None opposed.

The motion to remove Richard was postponed.

Monica sat rigidly in her chair, her face pale.

Adrian stared at the table.

For the first time, the people who had spent days making decisions about Raymond and Jada were being forced to answer questions themselves.

But Daniel was not finished.

He placed a final document before the board.

“This is a copy of the original educational account memorandum. It identifies Elaine Bennett's child as the intended beneficiary once the child reached adulthood. The document also states that the allocation cannot be redirected to a private company without written authorization from the estate's appointed trustee.””

Richard examined it.

“My father's signature is here.””

Daniel nodded.

“And the estate records identify the appointed trustee as Richard Bennett.””

Richard looked toward Adrian.

“You told me the account had been closed under the terms of an old settlement.””

Adrian didn't answer.

“You told me there were no remaining obligations to Elaine's family.””

Still nothing.

Richard's voice broke with anger.

“Did you know the money was intended for Jada?””

Adrian looked up.

“I knew there was an educational allocation.””

“Did you know it belonged to her?””

“I knew the terms were disputed.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

Jada closed her eyes.

Raymond felt his hand tighten around hers.

Richard stared at his nephew.

“Then you knew she had a legitimate interest in the account when you tried to remove me.””

Adrian rose.

“I was protecting the foundation.””

“From a young woman who hadn't even known the account existed?””

“From a claim that could have destabilized the organization.””

Richard shook his head.

“No. You were protecting yourself.””

Adrian looked toward the door.

The police officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, we'd like to speak with you about the transactions and the missing records.””

Adrian's face hardened.

“Am I being detained?””

“Not at this time. We are requesting your cooperation in the investigation.””

He looked around the room, searching for someone willing to defend him.

No one moved.

He gathered his jacket and followed the officer into the hallway.

Monica remained seated.

Her eyes were fixed on the table.

Raymond looked at her.

“You said people like me didn't belong in places like this.””

Monica didn't respond.

“You were wrong.””

She lifted her gaze.

For a moment, he saw the same woman who had laughed at his uniform.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

“You don't understand what happened,” she whispered.

“Then tell us.””

She looked toward the empty chair where Adrian had been sitting.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

Monica's lips trembled.

“From the truth.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What truth?””

Monica looked at Jada.

“Your mother wasn't the only person who knew about the educational account. Richard's father made a separate arrangement with me years ago.””

Richard went still.

“What arrangement?””

Monica opened her mouth.

Then she looked at the police officer standing by the door and fell silent.

Raymond felt the room tighten around them.

“Monica,” Richard said, “what did my father promise you?””

She stared at the table.

Finally, she whispered, “He promised me that if Elaine's child ever came forward, I would be protected from the consequences.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Protected how?””

Monica shook her head.

“I can't explain it here.””

Daniel's voice turned firm.

“You have an obligation to cooperate with the investigation.””

Monica looked at him, then at Raymond.

“Your wife left something out of the letter.””

Raymond's heart hammered.

“What?””

Monica's eyes filled with fear.

“Elaine didn't just refuse the money. She signed an agreement that gave her the right to reclaim the educational allocation only if a particular condition was met.””

Jada leaned forward.

“What condition?””

Monica looked toward the conference room door, where Adrian had disappeared.

Then she spoke the words that made Richard collapse back into his chair.

“Your grandfather didn't establish that account for you alone, Jada.””

The room fell silent.

Monica took a shaky breath.

“He established it for two children.””

Raymond stared at her.

“Two?””

Monica nodded.

“And the second child is someone you've known your entire life.””

Jada's fingers went cold in Raymond's hand.

Richard slowly raised his head.

“Monica, who is the other beneficiary?””

Monica looked directly at him.

“Adrian's daughter.””

No one moved.

Then Raymond understood the shape of the deception.

The money had not simply been stolen from Jada.

Someone had been trying to erase the evidence of a second claim—one that could expose the entire arrangement and reveal why the foundation's financial records had been manipulated for years.

Jada turned toward Richard.

“Does that mean Adrian's daughter knew about the account?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Monica wiped her eyes.

“She's eighteen. She graduated last year. She received a scholarship from the foundation, just like you.””

Raymond stared at the documents.

Two young women.

Two educational allocations.

One account.

And hundreds of thousands of dollars moved through a company controlled by Monica's family.

Daniel immediately asked the board to suspend all related transfers and secure the original trust records.

But Monica wasn't finished.

“There is another document,” she whispered.

Richard looked at her.

“What document?””

“The one that explains why the account was divided in the first place.””

“Where is it?””

Monica's face crumpled.

“Adrian has it.””

Raymond felt the last piece of certainty slip away.

The man who had controlled the financial records was now under investigation. The original trust document was missing, and the second beneficiary might have been unaware of her rights.

Jada looked at her father.

“Dad, if there are two of us, what happens to the money?””

Raymond squeezed her hand.

“We find out what the documents say.””

Monica lowered her eyes.

Then she whispered one final sentence.

“And when you find the original agreement, you'll understand why your mother was so afraid of the Bennett family.””

Outside, the morning sun shone across the foundation's glass walls.

Inside, the people who had built their power on secrets were finally beginning to lose control of them.

May you like

But the truth was still incomplete.

And somewhere beyond the conference room, Adrian Bennett possessed the one document that could determine whether Jada and the other beneficiary had been cheated—or whether the betrayal ran deeper than anyone in that room had yet imagined.
