Chapter 8: The Witness Who Disappeared
Raymond called Denise back seventeen times.
Every call went unanswered.
By the eighteenth attempt, Daniel Whitmore had already contacted emergency services and asked his investigator to locate her. The foundation's headquarters remained crowded with reporters, but Raymond could no longer hear their questions.
All he could hear was Denise's scream.
Jada stood beside him, gripping his arm.
“Dad, what happened?””
“I don't know.””
“Did someone hurt her?””
“I don't know, sweetheart.””
He hated the answer.
He hated how often he had been forced to give it during the past few days.
Daniel stepped away from the crowd, phone pressed to his ear.
“Denise Walker's address is on file with the foundation's human resources department,” he said.
“Our investigator is heading there now.””
Raymond looked at him.
“I'm going with him.””
“No,” Daniel replied firmly.
“You need to stay here with Jada. If someone is trying to intimidate witnesses, you shouldn't separate from her.””
Raymond's jaw tightened.
“I can't sit here while a woman who helped us disappears.””
“You won't be sitting here. We'll keep moving, but we need to do it intelligently.””
Jada took her father's hand.
“Please. Let him find her.””
Raymond looked at his daughter.
He wanted to argue. He wanted to drive to Denise's house, knock on every door, and demand answers from anyone who had seen her.
But Jada was right.
If someone had targeted Denise because of the documents, rushing into the situation without information could make things worse.
He nodded.
“Call me the moment you hear anything.””
Daniel agreed and left with his investigator.
Raymond and Jada returned to the conference room on the fourth floor. Richard Bennett was waiting there, pacing beside the windows.
When he saw them, he stopped.
“Daniel told me what happened.””
“Do you know where Denise is?”” Raymond asked.
“No.””
Richard looked shaken.
“I've asked our security department to preserve the building's access logs and camera footage. No one is to delete anything, and no one is to enter the financial archive without written authorization.””
“Who controls the security system?”” Jada asked.
“The operations director reports to the executive office.””
“Who is the operations director?””
Richard hesitated.
“Stephen Hayes.””
Raymond stared at him.
“Monica's brother?””
“Yes.””
Jada sank into a chair.
“So her family controls the money, the records, and the security system.””
“Not all of it,” Richard said.
“But enough that I should have recognized the risk earlier.””
Raymond walked toward the window.
“Richard, I need you to tell me something. Is there anyone else who could have benefited from that account?””
Richard was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
“My nephew, Adrian Bennett.””
Jada looked up.
“Your nephew?””
“My late brother's son. Adrian has served as the foundation's financial trustee for four years.””
“Does he have access to the accounts?””
“He has authority to review major transfers. He cannot authorize them alone.””
Raymond remembered Denise's final words.
The last transfer went to an account controlled by someone much closer to Richard.
Not Monica's brother.
Someone closer.
“Could Adrian have received the money?”” Raymond asked.
Richard's expression darkened.
“It's possible.””
“Do you trust him?””
Richard looked toward the door.
“I trusted him enough to give him responsibility. Whether that trust was justified is another question.””
A knock interrupted them.
A security officer entered carrying a tablet.
“Mr. Bennett, we reviewed the footage from the archive entrance yesterday.””
Richard turned.
“And?””
“The archive was accessed at 6:42 p.m. using an executive override credential.””
“Whose credential?””
The officer hesitated.
“Mr. Adrian Bennett's.””
Jada covered her mouth.
Raymond felt the pieces shifting into place.
Monica had accessed the records. Adrian's credential had been used to enter the archive. The missing trust document had appeared during the same period the scholarship review was initiated.
Someone had been coordinating their actions.
Richard took the tablet.
“Where is Adrian now?””
“He left the building at 7:05 p.m. yesterday. His vehicle hasn't returned.””
“Contact him.””
“We've tried. His phone is switched off.””
Richard handed the tablet back.
“Find him.””
The security officer left.
Jada stared at the closed door.
“What if Monica and Adrian are working together?””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Then we have a much larger problem than I thought.””
Raymond's phone rang.
Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Have you found Denise?””
“We found her apartment,” Daniel said.
“The door was open, and several drawers had been emptied. Her laptop is missing.””
Raymond stood.
“Is she there?””
“No. Her car is parked outside, but she isn't answering her phone.””
“Did you call the police?””
“Yes. They are treating it as a missing-person investigation. We don't know whether she's been harmed or whether she left voluntarily.””
Raymond closed his eyes.
“Did you find anything else?””
Daniel paused.
“There was a note on her kitchen table. It says, ‘Stop looking at the Bennett account.’”
Raymond felt a wave of anger.
“Then someone knows what she found.””
“Yes. And I believe we should assume the financial records are at risk.””
“Where do we go from here?””
“We secure the evidence we already have. I've sent copies of the transaction records to an independent forensic accountant and arranged for a second copy to be stored outside the foundation's systems.””
“Can the money be traced?””
“We've identified the receiving company and the bank involved. The bank won't disclose account details without proper legal authority, but we can pursue that through the appropriate process.””
Raymond looked at Richard.
“There's another possible recipient. Adrian Bennett.””
Daniel was quiet.
“Did Richard confirm that?””
“He told us Adrian is the financial trustee, and security footage shows his credentials were used to enter the archive.””
“That's significant. I'll include it in the preservation request.””
After the call ended, Richard sat down heavily.
“I can't believe this is happening.””
Raymond looked at him.
“You're not the only one.””
Richard met his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, I don't think you do.””
Raymond rarely raised his voice. He had learned that anger could consume energy without changing anything.
But now the words came before he could stop them.
“Your family has spent years making decisions about money and power. My wife left your world because she didn't want her child growing up in it. I raised Jada in a small house, worked every shift I could find, and never once told her she deserved more because of who her father might be.””
Richard listened without interrupting.
“Now she's earned a place at a university, and someone is trying to make her ashamed of the very family that raised her. Do you understand what that feels like?””
Richard's face crumpled slightly.
“No,” he said.
“Not completely.””
“Then don't tell me how sorry you are. Help us find the truth.””
Richard stood.
“You have my word.””
For the next two hours, the three of them worked with Daniel over the phone to organize the evidence.
They created a timeline of the account transfers, the scholarship review, the archive access, and Monica's public accusations. Every document was copied and logged. Every message was saved.
At 2:40 p.m., Daniel called again.
“We have a development.””
Raymond moved toward the phone.
“What is it?””
“Our investigator located a security camera from a business across the street from Denise's apartment. The footage shows her leaving the building at approximately 8:10 this morning.””
“Was she alone?””
“No. She got into a dark SUV.””
“Did she look distressed?””
“We can't tell from the footage. The vehicle's rear license plate is obscured.””
Raymond's heart sank.
“Could she have left voluntarily?””
“It's possible. But the note at her apartment and the missing laptop are concerning. The police are following up.””
Jada looked toward the window.
“Dad, what if she's afraid to talk?””
“Then we'll have to make sure she knows she isn't alone.””
Richard picked up his phone.
“I'll issue a formal notice requiring the preservation of all records related to the transfers. If anyone has been manipulating the system, they won't have unlimited time to cover their tracks.””
Daniel's voice came through the speaker.
“There's another issue. The foundation's trustees have received a request to remove Richard from his position as president.””
Richard froze.
“Who submitted it?””
“Adrian Bennett.””
Raymond stared at him.
“On what grounds?””
“Alleged mismanagement, conflict of interest, and failure to disclose a potential beneficiary.””
Richard let out a short, bitter laugh.
“Of course.””
Jada stood.
“Can they remove him?””
“Not immediately,” Daniel replied.
“The bylaws require a vote, and Richard has the right to respond. But the request could create a leadership crisis.””
Richard looked at the documents spread across the table.
“Adrian knows the account transfers could expose him. If he can remove me before the audit reaches the trustees, he may be able to control the investigation.””
Raymond thought about Monica's warning.
You'll destroy the entire foundation.
Perhaps she hadn't been talking about the students.
Perhaps she had been talking about the network of people who depended on the foundation remaining under their control.
“Then we need to expose the transfers before the vote,” Raymond said.
Daniel agreed.
“I'll request an emergency hearing with the trustees tomorrow morning. But we need stronger evidence linking Monica and Adrian to the money.””
Richard looked at the financial records.
“We have the transfers, the access logs, and the forged authorization.””
“Those are significant,” Daniel said.
“But we still need the receiving account details and proof of who controlled the company.””
Raymond's phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
He opened the message.
*Denise is alive. Stop digging, and she'll stay that way.*
Jada saw the screen.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
Richard stood abruptly.
“Give that to Daniel.””
Raymond forwarded the message.
Then another message arrived.
*You have until tomorrow morning to withdraw the complaint. After that, the foundation will release documents showing that Elaine accepted money in exchange for surrendering all claims to the Bennett family.*
Jada shook her head.
“That's impossible. Mom didn't take their money.””
Raymond remembered the agreement.
Elaine had declined financial support for herself. The educational allocation had been preserved for her child.
But if someone altered the documents, the truth could be buried beneath a more convenient story.
Richard read the message.
“My father's estate did negotiate a settlement with Elaine's family. But the records I remember clearly state that she declined personal compensation.””
“Can you prove it?”” Raymond asked.
“The original estate records are stored in the Bennett family archive. The foundation only holds copies.””
“Who controls the archive?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Adrian.””
Jada's face went pale.
“Then he could change those records, too.””
“Not the originals,” Richard said quickly.
“They are maintained in a secured archive with physical access logs.””
“Unless someone has already taken them,” Raymond replied.
Richard didn't answer.
The room fell silent.
Then Daniel's voice came through the speaker.
“I've just received a message from one of the trustees. Adrian has called an emergency vote for eight tomorrow morning. He intends to remove Richard before the financial audit begins.””
Richard looked at Raymond.
“We have less than eighteen hours.””
Raymond thought about Denise, wherever she was. He thought about the money that had disappeared, the documents that had been moved, and the daughter whose future had become a battlefield.
Then he looked at Jada.
She was frightened.
But she wasn't backing away.
“Dad,” she said quietly, “what if we show them everything?””
“Everything we have?””
She nodded.
“Every transfer. Every message. Every document. No more letting Monica tell our story for us.””
Raymond studied her face.
Then he smiled faintly.
“You really are your mother's daughter.””
Jada squeezed his hand.
“And yours.””
At 6:18 p.m., Daniel arrived with a new document obtained from the county's public business registry.
Hayes Educational Consulting had been dissolved three weeks earlier.
Its registered assets had been transferred to a second company, Bennett Strategic Holdings.
The listed director was Adrian Bennett.
Richard stared at the page.
“Adrian owns the company that received the money.””
“On paper,” Daniel replied.
“We still need to trace the beneficial ownership and the final destination of the funds.””
Raymond looked at the transfer records.
“Monica sent the money to her brother's company. Then the company transferred its assets to Adrian.””
“That's what the public filings suggest,” Daniel said.
“It could be an ordinary business restructuring, or it could be part of a scheme to move the funds beyond immediate scrutiny. We need the bank records to establish what happened.””
Jada leaned over the page.
“Why would Monica and Adrian work together if they could both be exposed?””
Richard answered slowly.
“Because they may each have something the other needs.””
He looked at the company registration.
“Monica controls the foundation's administrative processes. Adrian controls its financial oversight. Together, they could move money while making each transaction appear legitimate.””
“And if they were discovered?”” Raymond asked.
“Each could blame the other.””
Daniel gathered the documents.
“Tomorrow's meeting will determine whether Richard retains authority to investigate. We need to be prepared.””
Richard nodded.
“Then we'll be there.””
Jada looked at the clock.
“I'm going home to change.””
Raymond frowned.
“Why?””
“Because tomorrow, I'm not going to sit in the back of the room while people discuss my future as if I'm not there.””
She picked up her bag.
“I earned my scholarship. I want them to look me in the eye when they explain why they tried to take it away.””
Raymond felt pride rise through the exhaustion.
“All right, baby girl.””
As they left the office, his phone vibrated one last time.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Denise sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle, her face pale and her hands resting in her lap.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
*Bring the original letter from Elaine to the emergency meeting. If you want Denise released, surrender it before the vote.*
Raymond stopped walking.
Jada turned.
“Dad?””
He showed her the screen.
She stared at the photograph.
Then she looked at the letter tucked inside his bag.
The letter that had revealed her father's identity.
The letter that had warned Raymond about Monica.
The letter that might now be the only thing protecting Denise.
Jada lifted her chin.
“They think they can make us trade one person's future for another.””
Raymond looked at the photograph again.
“We're not trading anyone.””
He forwarded the image to Daniel and the investigator, then called the police.
May you like
But as he stood beneath the cold lights of the office hallway, one question would not leave his mind.
If Monica and Adrian were desperate enough to threaten a witness, steal records, and manipulate a scholarship, what would they do when the entire foundation finally saw the truth?
