Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Foundation
By noon, the Bennett Foundation's glass-fronted headquarters had become the center of a storm.
Reporters had gathered near the entrance after someone leaked news of the emergency trustee meeting. Parents called the foundation asking whether their children's scholarships were at risk. Students posted screenshots of rumors on social media, and several local news stations sent camera crews to the sidewalk.
Raymond watched the chaos from the passenger seat of Richard Bennett's black sedan.
Jada sat beside him, holding her phone in both hands.
“People are already saying I tried to claim money from the Bennett family,” she said.
Raymond glanced at the screen.
A public post had circulated through the local community group.
*VALedictorian accused of hiding family wealth while receiving need-based scholarship. Foundation trustees called into emergency meeting.*
Someone had attached Jada's graduation photograph.
Her face was clearly visible.
The comments were worse.
Maybe she was never poor.
Funny how these things happen when people want a free ride.
The foundation should protect honest students first.
Jada's breathing quickened.
“I didn't ask for any of this.””
“I know.””
“They don't even know me.””
Raymond reached over and turned her phone facedown.
“Then don't let strangers tell you who you are.””
“But what if the university sees it?””
“Then we'll show them the evidence.””
“What if they believe the rumors anyway?””
Raymond looked at her.
“Baby, people believed things about me before they ever met me. They saw a uniform and decided they knew my worth.””
He nodded toward the phone.
“Now they're seeing your name and deciding they know your character. Neither group gets to write our story.””
Jada's eyes glistened.
“You make it sound so easy.””
“It isn't easy.””
He took her hand.
“But it is simple. We tell the truth. We keep the proof. And we don't let anyone frighten us into doing something we'll regret.””
The car stopped beneath the building's covered entrance.
Richard had arranged for them to enter through a private reception area to avoid the cameras. Inside, the lobby smelled of polished stone and fresh coffee. A receptionist hurried toward Richard with a tablet.
“Mr. Bennett, the trustees are gathering on the fourth floor. Ms. Hayes has already arrived.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Of course she has.””
He led Raymond and Jada toward the elevators.
At the fourth-floor conference room, Daniel Whitmore was waiting with two other attorneys. A large screen displayed the meeting agenda, and folders had been arranged around a polished table.
Monica stood near the windows, speaking to a man in a gray suit.
She wore a navy dress today, her gold earrings replaced by small pearl studs. Her hair was perfectly styled. A pink folder lay open in front of her.
When she saw Raymond, she paused.
Then she smiled as if they had met for coffee rather than in the middle of a possible legal scandal.
“Raymond. What a surprise.””
He walked toward the table.
“Is it?””
Monica looked at Jada.
“Jada, sweetheart. I hope you're feeling better after yesterday's excitement.””
Jada stared at her.
“Did you request a review of my scholarship?””
Monica's smile remained in place.
“I requested clarification regarding a potential financial discrepancy.””
“You accused me of hiding family assets.””
“I asked the foundation to verify information.””
“What information?””
Monica glanced toward Richard.
“Perhaps this isn't the best place to discuss private matters.””
“You made it public when someone posted my photograph online.””
Monica's smile faltered for the first time.
“I had nothing to do with that.””
“Then why did you ask the university to review my household income after my scholarship had already been approved?””
“Because new information came to light.””
“What information?””
Monica closed the pink folder.
“Jada, I understand that you're emotional. But these are complicated financial matters.””
“I'm not emotional. I'm asking a question.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Then answer it, Monica.””
She turned to him.
“Richard, I was hoping we'd discuss this with the trustees present.””
“We will. But before we begin, I want to know why you used an inactive authorization code to submit a review request in my name.””
Monica's face changed.
Only slightly.
But Raymond saw it.
The woman who had laughed at his uniform now looked at Richard as though he had broken an unspoken agreement.
“I don't know what you're referring to,” she said.
Richard placed the form on the table.
“This request was submitted under my authority. It carries a deactivated code and a signature I did not authorize.””
Monica glanced at the document.
“Then the system must have made an error.””
“The system doesn't invent authorization codes.””
“Perhaps someone in administration made a mistake.””
“Who?””
Monica lifted her chin.
“I'll need to review the records before I can answer that.””
Daniel spoke from the other side of the table.
“That's precisely why the technology logs must be preserved.””
Monica turned toward him.
“Mr. Whitmore, this is an internal foundation matter. Your presence is unnecessary.””
“I'm here as legal counsel for the Bennetts and to advise on the trust documents that may affect this proceeding.””
“Which trust documents?””
Daniel met her gaze.
“The documents you were recorded accessing yesterday.””
Silence fell over the room.
The man in the gray suit shifted uncomfortably.
Monica closed her folder with a sharp snap.
“I was reviewing historical records as part of my official responsibilities.””
“Then you won't object to an audit of your access logs,” Daniel said.
“Of course not.””
Richard studied her.
“Good. Because the original trust document is missing.””
Monica's eyes widened.
“Missing?””
“The archive was opened under your credentials.””
“That's impossible.””
“The access record says otherwise.””
Monica turned toward the other trustees, several of whom had just entered the room.
“This is becoming absurd. We have a scholarship program facing a serious eligibility dispute, and instead of addressing it, we're accusing staff members of wrongdoing based on incomplete records.””
One trustee, a broad-shouldered man named Harold Price, nodded.
“Monica has served this foundation for years. We should be careful before damaging her reputation.””
Jada looked at him.
“Were you careful when you damaged mine?””
Harold frowned.
“Excuse me?””
“My scholarship was approved. Someone reopened my financial records without evidence. Now strangers are calling me a fraud.””
“Your eligibility is under review,” Harold replied.
“That doesn't establish wrongdoing by anyone.””
“Exactly,” Jada said.
“So why are you treating me like I've already done something wrong?””
Harold glanced away.
Monica stepped between them.
“Jada, no one is attacking you. We are protecting the integrity of the foundation.””
“Then show me the evidence.””
Monica's lips tightened.
“I cannot disclose confidential information to a student.””
“I'm the student you're accusing.””
Richard raised a hand.
“Enough. We're not going to resolve this through personal attacks. Let's begin the meeting.””
The trustees took their seats.
Richard stood at the head of the table.
“As president of the foundation, I want to establish three facts before we discuss any proposed suspension of scholarship funding. First, Jada Bennett's academic scholarship was earned through her school performance. Second, the financial review was initiated without my authorization. Third, the original trust document is currently missing.””
A murmur spread around the table.
Richard continued.
“We will not suspend scholarship payments based on unverified claims. Any request to do so must be supported by evidence and reviewed by independent counsel.””
Monica rose.
“Richard, with respect, you cannot separate these matters. If an undisclosed beneficiary has a claim to the trust, the foundation must determine whether current scholarship allocations are affected.””
“Do you have evidence that Jada has violated any scholarship requirement?””
Monica hesitated.
“I have evidence that her family circumstances may be different from what was originally reported.””
Raymond stood.
“What circumstances?””
Monica looked at him.
“Your connection to the Bennett family.””
Raymond felt every eye turn toward him.
“What connection?””
Monica's voice grew sharper.
“You have been communicating with Richard Bennett. Your daughter is now claiming a possible family relationship. And you have retained legal counsel to examine a private trust.””
“Because you threatened my daughter's scholarship,” Raymond replied.
“I did not threaten her.””
“You sent an eligibility review that put her funding on hold.””
“I followed procedure.””
“You used a code that had been deactivated.””
Monica's cheeks flushed.
“That has not been proven to be my doing.””
Daniel calmly placed a copy of the access record on the table.
“Your credentials were used. The system logs show the review request was submitted from your assigned workstation.””
Monica stared at the page.
Then she looked toward Harold Price.
“Harold, surely we can agree that the foundation must protect itself from potential conflicts of interest.””
Harold cleared his throat.
“I think we should postpone any final decision until the documentation is complete.””
Monica's expression hardened.
“Postponing is exactly how these problems become scandals.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Then give us the evidence.””
Monica reached into her pink folder and withdrew a single sheet.
“I have a statement from a source familiar with the Bennett family's private financial arrangements. It indicates that Raymond Bennett has known about his connection to Richard's family for years.””
Raymond stared at her.
“That's a lie.””
Monica held up the page.
“The source claims you concealed information that could affect Jada's eligibility.””
Jada stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor.
“My father didn't know anything until yesterday.””
Monica looked at her with a thin smile.
“Then perhaps you should ask why your mother kept so many secrets.””
Raymond's hands clenched.
For one dangerous second, he wanted to cross the room and tear the document from her fingers.
Instead, he remained still.
Daniel rose.
“Unless you can identify the source and provide evidence supporting this allegation, the statement is hearsay and should not be used to justify any action against Jada's scholarship.””
Monica lowered the paper.
“I'm trying to protect the foundation.””
“From what?”” Richard demanded.
“A student whose grades earned her a scholarship?””
“From a conflict that could destabilize the trust.””
Richard's voice turned cold.
“You've used that word three times. Explain exactly what you mean.””
Monica looked around the table.
Then she took a breath and spoke slowly.
“If Jada Bennett is recognized as a direct descendant, she may become eligible for benefits that were never intended to be distributed without proper review. Her claim could affect the foundation's funding structure. The trustees have a responsibility to protect the program from financial uncertainty.””
Jada shook her head.
“I haven't claimed anything.””
“But you may,” Monica replied.
“I'm here because you threatened my education.””
“Your education is not being threatened.””
Richard pushed the scholarship review form toward her.
“Then why is her funding on hold?””
Monica said nothing.
Daniel looked at the trustees.
“I recommend that the proposed suspension motion be withdrawn until an independent review is completed.””
Three trustees immediately nodded.
Harold looked uncertain.
Monica slowly sat down.
For the first time, Raymond saw something beneath her polished appearance that had nothing to do with social status or expensive clothing.
Fear.
She was afraid of what might happen if Jada's family connection was confirmed.
And Raymond began to suspect that the scholarship was only the beginning.
The meeting broke for a brief recess.
Jada stepped into the hallway to get some air. Raymond followed her, but before he could reach her, Monica emerged from a side door.
“Jada, may I speak with you privately?””
Jada stopped.
“No.””
Monica's smile tightened.
“This concerns your future.””
“My future is not a private conversation with you.””
“I think you'll find that your father hasn't told you everything.””
Raymond stepped between them.
“Don't speak to her.””
Monica ignored him.
“Your mother made arrangements years ago that could affect your eligibility. You should know that before you allow Richard to make promises he may not be able to keep.””
Jada looked at her.
“What arrangements?””
Monica's eyes flicked toward Raymond.
“Ask your father.””
Raymond's expression hardened.
“You know nothing about my marriage.””
“Don't I?””
For a moment, Monica's composure slipped.
“Elaine was very good at making people believe she had walked away from the Bennett family for noble reasons. But people don't always leave wealth behind because they don't want it.””
Raymond took a step toward her.
“You will not use my wife's name to frighten my daughter.””
Monica lifted her chin.
“Then perhaps you should have told her the truth sooner.””
She walked away before either of them could respond.
Jada turned toward Raymond.
“Dad, what did she mean?””
“I don't know.””
“Do you think Mom made some kind of deal?””
“I think Monica wants us to believe that.””
Jada looked back toward the conference room.
“Then why does she seem so desperate to keep us away from the trust?””
Raymond had no answer.
A few minutes later, Daniel called them back inside.
The trustees had agreed to suspend the scholarship review pending an independent audit. The university would be notified that no evidence of financial misconduct had been established.
It was a small victory.
But Monica had not finished.
As Raymond and Jada gathered their things, she approached Richard near the conference table.
“Before we adjourn,” she said, “there's another matter the trustees need to consider.””
Richard looked exhausted.
“What now?””
Monica removed a sealed envelope from her folder.
“An original document recovered from the foundation archive. It concerns Elaine Bennett's agreement with the family.””
Daniel immediately stood.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the records office.””
“Why wasn't it included in the materials provided to counsel?””
“Because I only discovered it this morning.””
Richard reached for the envelope.
Monica pulled it back.
“I believe the trustees should hear its contents before any decision is made about Jada's status.””
Daniel's expression turned severe.
“Do not open that document without establishing its authenticity and chain of custody.””
Monica ignored him.
She broke the seal.
Then she read the first line silently.
Her face changed.
Not with triumph.
With alarm.
Richard noticed.
“What does it say?””
Monica looked at him.
For several seconds, she appeared unable to speak.
Then she lifted her eyes toward Raymond.
“Elaine Bennett,” she whispered, “may have had a legal interest in the foundation long before Jada was born.””
Richard stood abruptly.
“Give me that envelope.””
Monica clutched it against her chest.
“No.””
May you like
The room fell silent.
And Raymond realized that whatever was written in that document, Monica was more afraid of it than she was of losing control of the foundation.
