Chapter 8: The Uncle Who Returned From The Grave

Christopher Ashford had spent his entire life believing he knew his family.

He knew the stories.

He knew the names.

He knew the legacy.

But standing in the doorway of his father’s old office, looking at the man who was supposed to have died before he was born, he realized something terrifying.

The Ashford family history had been built on lies.

Edward Ashford stepped into the room slowly.

He didn’t look like a monster.

That was the most disturbing part.

He looked ordinary.

A man in an expensive suit.

A man with gray hair and a calm smile.

A man who could sit across from someone at dinner and make them believe he was their closest ally.

Christopher understood immediately.

That was how people like him survived.

They didn’t look dangerous.

They looked trustworthy.

“Who are you?”” Christopher asked.

Edward smiled faintly.

“You know exactly who I am.””

“No.””

Christopher held his ground.

“I know who you claim to be.””

Edward’s smile disappeared slightly.

“Still your father’s son.””

The words carried bitterness.

Christopher noticed.

“You hate him.””

Edward looked around the office.

“This room belonged to me once.””

“No.””

“It should have.””

Christopher’s expression hardened.

“Is that what this is about?””

Edward looked at him.

“About what?””

“Power.””

A quiet laugh escaped Edward.

“You think this is about money?””

“Isn’t it?””

Edward stepped closer.

“Your father always taught you that, didn’t he?””

Christopher said nothing.

“That everything came down to business. Contracts. Numbers. Ownership.””

Edward shook his head.

“He never told you what he took from me.””

“What did he take?””

Edward looked toward the old family photograph.

“My life.””

The room became silent.

Eleanor moved closer to Christopher.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Edward looked at her.

“Still protecting him?””

Eleanor’s face tightened.

“You destroyed enough.””

Edward laughed.

“Destroyed?””

He looked at Christopher.

“She says I destroyed things.””

His eyes moved back to Eleanor.

“But she was the one who helped your father bury the truth.””

Christopher looked at his mother.

“What is he talking about?””

Eleanor looked away.

Edward smiled.

“Of course she didn’t tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Edward walked toward the desk.

“Your mother knows why Alexander Ashford became the head of the family.””

Christopher waited.

“Because she helped him.””

Eleanor’s voice became sharp.

“Stop.””

Edward ignored her.

“Your grandfather originally chose me.””

Christopher frowned.

“What?””

Edward nodded.

“I was the oldest son.””

He touched the desk.

“This company. This house. This name. It was supposed to be mine.””

Christopher looked at him.

“My father inherited it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Edward’s expression darkened.

“Because Alexander convinced everyone I was unstable.””

The accusation hung there.

“He forged documents.””

Christopher looked at Eleanor.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Mom?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Some of it.””

Christopher stepped back.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father made mistakes.””

Edward laughed.

“Mistakes.””

He repeated the word.

“That’s what everyone called them.””

Christopher looked at Edward.

“Then why disappear?””

Edward’s face changed.

For the first time, anger appeared.

“Because your father tried to destroy me.””

“You were accused of crimes.””

“Because he framed me.””

“And Daniel Vale?””

Edward looked at him.

“What about him?””

“He said you worked with Marcus Laurent.””

Edward smiled.

“Daniel.””

A strange expression crossed his face.

“Daniel always was too loyal.””

Christopher noticed.

“You know where he is?””

Edward didn’t answer.

That was another answer.

Before Christopher could speak, the sound of footsteps came from downstairs.

Richard entered the hallway.

“Uncle Edward.””

Christopher turned.

Richard stopped.

The room became completely still.

Christopher looked from Richard to Edward.

Then everything clicked.

The photograph.

The meeting.

The secrets.

“You knew.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Christopher—”

“You knew he was alive.””

Richard didn’t answer.

Christopher walked toward him.

“You knew.””

“I was trying to protect the family.””

Christopher laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

Richard looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Christopher’s voice hardened.

“I understand perfectly.””

Edward stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Christopher looked at him.

“You brought Richard into this.””

“I brought the truth back.””

“You brought chaos.””

Edward smiled.

“Chaos is what happens when people lose control.””

Then his eyes moved toward Vivian.

She had entered behind Richard.

Christopher noticed.

She looked different now.

Not confident.

Not manipulative.

Tired.

Edward looked at her.

“You failed.””

Vivian’s face changed.

“I tried.””

Christopher stared.

“Tried what?””

Nobody answered.

His patience disappeared.

“What did you all try to do?””

Vivian looked at him.

“Christopher…”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“No more secrets.””

Edward smiled.

“Finally.””

He looked at everyone.

“Let him hear it.””

Vivian swallowed.

“I was supposed to marry you because I needed access.””

Christopher felt the words hit him.

“Access to what?””

“Ashford Global.””

He stared.

“The company.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vivian looked at Edward.

Then away.

“Because my father lost everything because of yours.””

Christopher’s eyes narrowed.

“Marcus Laurent.””

She nodded.

“He believed Alexander Ashford ruined him.””

“Did he?””

Vivian hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

“I don’t know anymore.””

Edward looked annoyed.

“Don’t become weak now.””

Christopher noticed.

Vivian wasn’t loyal to Edward.

She was afraid of him.

“What did Marcus want?””

Edward answered.

“Revenge.””

Christopher looked at him.

“And you?””

Edward smiled.

“I wanted what was always mine.””

The arrogance in his voice was undeniable.

“You manipulated everyone.””

Edward shrugged.

“Everyone manipulates.””

Christopher looked at Richard.

“And you?””

Richard looked down.

“I wanted to help.””

“With what?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Christopher stepped closer.

“You helped poison me.””

Richard’s face changed.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I didn’t know about that.””

“Then what did you know?””

Silence.

Finally Richard said:

“I knew Edward was coming back.””

Christopher stared.

“And you said nothing.””

“I was afraid.””

The honesty surprised him.

Richard looked at Edward.

“He threatened me.””

Edward’s expression remained calm.

“Don’t exaggerate.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You ruined my father’s life.””

“Your father was weak.””

“And you destroyed Daniel.””

Christopher turned sharply.

“What?””

Richard looked at Edward.

“You killed him.””

Edward’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Christopher saw it.

“You said Daniel disappeared.””

Richard looked at Christopher.

“He didn’t disappear.””

A terrible silence followed.

Christopher whispered:

“Then what happened?””

Richard looked at Edward.

“He found out Edward was alive.””

Christopher felt cold.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Nobody answered.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A voice.

Weak.

But familiar.

“Still asking the right questions, Christopher.””

Everyone turned.

At the end of the corridor stood Daniel Vale.

Alive.

But injured.

His shirt was stained.

His face was bruised.

Christopher rushed toward him.

“Daniel.””

Daniel grabbed the wall for support.

“Your uncle…”

He looked at Edward.

“…never planned to take the company.””

Edward’s expression darkened.

Christopher frowned.

“What did he plan?””

Daniel looked at him.

“He planned to erase the Ashford name completely.””

Edward moved forward.

“Enough.””

But Daniel continued.

“The company, the estate, the family…”

He coughed.

“It was never about inheritance.””

Christopher stared.

“Then what was it about?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small recording device.

“I found the final proof.””

Edward’s calm expression finally disappeared.

Daniel pressed a button.

A voice filled the hallway.

Alexander Ashford.

Christopher froze.

His father.

The recording was old.

But clear.

“If you are hearing this, then Edward has returned.””

Everyone became silent.

The recording continued.

“My brother was never interested in the company.””

A pause.

“He was interested in destroying me.””

Christopher listened.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Because Edward was not my brother by blood.””

The hallway went completely still.

Christopher looked at Edward.

Edward’s face turned cold.

The recording continued.

“Edward Ashford is the son of the man who killed my father.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

And Christopher realized the final secret his father had hidden was not about betrayal.

It was about identity.

Edward stepped backward.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

May you like

Because the truth he had spent years hiding had finally returned.

And everyone in the Ashford Estate had heard it.
