Chapter 3: The Man Who Should Have Been Dead

Christopher Ashford had always believed the past stayed buried.

That belief lasted until the morning a security guard told him someone who had been dead for ten years was standing inside his home.

For several seconds, Christopher said nothing.

The dining hall disappeared around him.

The voices.

The shattered porcelain.

The terrified faces watching him.

Everything faded beneath one impossible sentence.

The person who was supposed to be dead.

“Repeat that,” Christopher said.

The security guard’s voice trembled through the phone.

“Mr. Ashford, we found someone inside the west wing.””

Christopher gripped the phone tighter.

“Who?””

A long silence followed.

Then the guard answered:

“Daniel Vale.””

The name struck him like a physical blow.

Nobody in the room understood why Christopher suddenly went pale.

But Emily did.

She watched his face carefully.

“Sir?””

Christopher barely heard her.

Daniel Vale.

Ten years ago, Daniel Vale had been the most trusted business partner of his father, Alexander Ashford.

He had been like family.

Until the night everything changed.

A fire had destroyed one of the Ashford warehouses.

Millions of dollars in company assets disappeared.

And Daniel Vale was blamed for the crime.

Two days later, police found his abandoned car near a cliff outside the city.

No body was recovered.

But everyone assumed he had died.

Including Christopher.

Including his father.

Including the entire Ashford family.

“Sir?”” the guard repeated.

Christopher forced himself back into the moment.

“Where is he?””

“West wing hallway.””

“Is he armed?””

“No, sir.””

“Is anyone with him?””

Another pause.

“No.””

Christopher looked around the room.

Vivian was watching him.

Richard was gone.

Emily stood near the table, still holding herself like someone waiting for another storm.

“I’m coming there.””

He ended the call.

Vivian immediately stepped forward.

“Christopher, who was it?””

He looked at her.

And something in his expression made her nervous.

“Daniel Vale.””

The reaction was instant.

Vivian’s face lost color.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Christopher noticed.

“You know that name.””

She recovered quickly.

“Everyone knows that name.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Vivian looked away.

“He was your father’s partner.””

“And?””

“And he betrayed your family.””

Christopher studied her.

“Why do you look afraid?””

“I don’t.””

“You do.””

Vivian shook her head.

“You’re letting all of this get into your head.””

Christopher ignored the comment.

He turned toward Emily.

“Stay here.””

Emily nodded.

Then hesitated.

“Sir…”

“What?””

She looked toward Vivian.

“Be careful.””

The warning was quiet.

But Christopher heard the fear behind it.

He walked out of the dining hall.

The west wing of the Ashford Estate had been closed for years.

It was the oldest part of the mansion.

The walls were covered with paintings of previous generations. Dust gathered on unused furniture. The air always felt colder there, as if the rooms remembered things nobody wanted to discuss.

Christopher moved quickly down the hallway.

Two security guards stood near the entrance.

Both looked nervous.

“What happened?”” Christopher asked.

One guard stepped forward.

“We found the door open.””

Christopher looked at the old wooden door.

“That door has been locked for years.””

“Yes, sir.””

“Who had access?””

The guards exchanged looks.

Nobody answered immediately.

Christopher’s voice hardened.

“Answer me.””

“Only family members and the estate manager.””

Christopher’s eyes narrowed.

“Open it.””

The guard unlocked the door.

The room beyond was dark.

Christopher entered.

And stopped.

A man stood beside the old fireplace.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair was gray.

But Christopher knew him immediately.

“Daniel.””

The man slowly turned.

His eyes were tired.

But alive.

“Christopher.””

The sound of his voice brought back memories Christopher had spent years trying to forget.

His father laughing during business dinners.

Daniel teaching him how to negotiate.

Daniel standing beside the Ashford family like a brother.

Then the betrayal.

The accusations.

The disappearance.

Christopher took a step forward.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel looked around the room.

“I could ask you the same question.””

Christopher frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel walked toward an old desk.

“You still don’t know, do you?””

“Know what?””

Daniel studied him.

“That your father was not the man you thought he was.””

The words immediately changed the atmosphere.

Christopher’s expression hardened.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

Daniel didn’t react.

“Alexander Ashford destroyed my life.””

“My father died believing you stole from him.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Your father died believing whatever protected his reputation.””

Christopher stepped closer.

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You were accused of fraud.””

“Yes.””

“You had no explanation.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because your father made sure nobody would hear it.””

Christopher stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Daniel reached into his coat.

The security guards immediately moved.

Christopher raised a hand.

“Wait.””

Daniel slowly removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the desk.

“What is that?””

“The truth.””

Christopher didn’t touch it.

“Why come back now?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Because someone is trying to finish what they started ten years ago.””

Christopher’s face tightened.

“The coffee.””

Daniel nodded.

“And the letter.””

“You know about the letter?””

“I know everything.””

The words unsettled Christopher.

“How?””

Daniel looked toward the doorway.

“Because I wrote the warning.””

Silence.

Christopher stared.

“You wrote it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you come directly to me?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

“Because I knew someone was watching.””

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he asked:

“Did you see the photograph?””

Christopher froze.

The photograph.

Vivian.

The dead man.

The hidden connection.

“How do you know about that?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because the person in that picture is the reason I disappeared.””

Christopher felt a chill.

“Who is he?””

Daniel looked at him.

“You really don’t know.””

“Tell me.””

Daniel took a breath.

“The man standing beside Vivian is Marcus Laurent.””

Christopher frowned.

“Vivian’s father?””

Daniel nodded.

“But that’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Vivian told me her father died years ago.””

Daniel’s expression turned grim.

“Christopher…”

He stepped closer.

“Your fiancée has been lying to you from the beginning.””

Before Christopher could respond, a sound came from the hallway.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

One of the security guards ran outside.

Nobody was there.

But on the floor was a small envelope.

Christopher picked it up.

No name.

No address.

Only three words written across the front.

*You chose wrong.*

His heart sank.

He opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph taken that morning.

The dining room.

The shattered cup.

Emily standing beside him.

And behind them, barely visible in the reflection of the glass window…

Someone had been watching.

Christopher slowly turned toward the window.

The gardens outside were empty.

But the photograph proved one terrifying fact.

The person who wanted him dead had been inside the Ashford Estate the entire time.

And then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Christopher read it once.

Then again.

May you like

Because the message contained only one sentence.

*Ask Emily why she was really hired by your father.*
