Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Erased

The woman’s words froze the entire Ashford Estate.

“I’m the woman your father paid to disappear.””

Christopher stared at her.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The grand entrance hall, usually filled with servants, visitors, and quiet footsteps, had become completely silent.

The stranger stood beneath the chandelier wearing a worn coat that looked years old. Her hair was streaked with gray. Her face carried the exhaustion of someone who had spent a lifetime running from something she could never escape.

But her eyes were sharp.

And familiar.

Not familiar because Christopher knew her.

Familiar because he had seen that same look before.

In old photographs.

In the faces of people who had been betrayed.

“Who are you?”” Christopher asked.

The woman tightened her grip on the leather bag in her hand.

“My name is Clara Bennett.””

Emily stepped backward.

“No…”

Christopher turned toward her.

“You know her?””

Emily’s lips trembled.

“Yes.””

Vivian crossed her arms.

“How convenient.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vivian smiled coldly.

“First a hidden letter. Then a fake dead man. Now a mysterious woman appears claiming your father erased her.””

Christopher looked at Vivian.

“You sound less surprised than you should be.””

Her expression shifted.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Christopher noticed.

Again.

“You know something about Clara.””

Vivian laughed.

“That’s impossible.””

Clara looked at Vivian.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But I know you.””

The room changed.

Vivian’s confidence disappeared.

“You’re lying.””

Clara stepped forward.

“I saw your father the night he died.””

Christopher’s breathing slowed.

“What?””

Clara looked at him.

“Your father didn’t die peacefully.””

Nobody spoke.

The sentence hung in the air.

Christopher felt a pressure building inside his chest.

“My father had a heart attack.””

“That’s what they told you.””

“Because it was true.””

Clara shook her head.

“No, Christopher.””

She looked at Vivian.

“Because that was the story they created.””

Vivian immediately stepped forward.

“Security.””

Two guards appeared from the hallway.

Christopher raised his hand.

“No.””

Vivian looked at him.

“You’re allowing a stranger to accuse your family inside your own home?””

Christopher’s voice was cold.

“I’m allowing someone to speak.””

Clara looked relieved.

Then she opened her leather bag.

“I brought proof.””

She removed several old documents.

Christopher recognized the handwriting before he even touched them.

His father’s.

He took the papers.

The first page was dated ten years earlier.

The same year Daniel disappeared.

His eyes moved across the words.

*Project Blackthorn.*

Christopher frowned.

“What is this?””

Clara answered.

“Your father’s investigation.””

“Into what?””

“Into Marcus Laurent.””

The name appeared again.

Every secret seemed to lead back to the same person.

Christopher looked through the pages.

There were records of financial transfers.

Photographs.

Meeting notes.

And one sentence written in his father’s handwriting:

*If anything happens to me, Christopher must never trust the Laurents.*

Christopher’s hand tightened.

Vivian noticed.

“Christopher, this is absurd.””

He looked up.

“Why?””

“Because anyone could have written those papers.””

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at the documents.

“Because Alexander Ashford wrote those after Marcus Laurent threatened him.””

Christopher froze.

“Threatened him?””

Clara nodded.

“Your father discovered Marcus was using Ashford Global’s accounts to move illegal money.””

The room went silent.

Christopher looked at Vivian.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Clara continued.

“He confronted Marcus.””

“What happened?””

Clara’s expression darkened.

“Marcus told him that powerful families don’t survive because they are innocent.””

She paused.

“They survive because they know when to sacrifice someone.””

Christopher looked toward Emily.

She was crying quietly.

“You knew.””

Emily wiped her face.

“I knew some of it.””

“How?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“Because Clara was my mother’s sister.””

Christopher stared.

“Your aunt?””

She nodded.

“I was the one who helped her escape.””

The revelation shocked him.

“You knew Clara was alive?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Emily looked at him with pain.

“I promised your father.””

Christopher walked away slowly.

The betrayal hurt differently than Vivian’s.

Emily had saved his life.

But she had also hidden a secret for years.

“Everyone around me knew something.””

His voice was quiet.

“And I knew nothing.””

Clara stepped closer.

“Your father wanted to protect you.””

Christopher turned.

“By lying to me?””

“By keeping you alive.””

The answer silenced him.

Because a part of him understood.

But another part was furious.

“Why come back now?””

Clara looked toward Vivian.

“Because I heard she was going to marry you.””

Vivian’s face hardened.

“You have no evidence against me.””

Clara looked at her.

“I have more than enough.””

She removed another photograph.

This one was newer.

Christopher took it.

His eyes narrowed.

The image showed Vivian meeting someone in a dark parking garage.

The man’s face was clear.

Richard Ashford.

Christopher’s brother.

“When was this taken?””

“Two weeks ago.””

Christopher stared at the photograph.

“No.””

Clara looked at him.

“Yes.””

“He wouldn’t.””

“He already did.””

Christopher’s mind raced.

Richard.

Vivian.

The hidden documents.

The poisoned coffee.

The letter.

Everything connected.

But he needed proof.

He needed something undeniable.

Suddenly, Vivian’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

A flash of panic crossed her face.

Christopher noticed.

“Who is it?””

“Nobody.””

“Answer it.””

She didn’t move.

“Vivian.””

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Then she answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody else could hear the voice.

But everyone could see her expression change.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What do you mean?””

A pause.

Then:

“No. That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

Christopher’s eyes narrowed.

“What wasn’t supposed to happen?””

Vivian quickly ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Christopher stepped closer.

“Who called you?””

“No one important.””

“You’re lying.””

She looked at him.

“You think you know everything now?””

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“But I know you’re scared.””

For the first time, Vivian’s mask completely broke.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Clara.

Then Emily.

Then Christopher.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

Christopher stared.

“From who?””

Vivian didn’t answer.

Instead, she whispered:

“You have no idea what your father left behind.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

A second later, an alarm began screaming.

The security guards rushed toward the windows.

“Someone cut the power!””

Christopher stood still.

Then he heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A slow creaking floorboard.

Someone was moving inside the house.

Despite the darkness, everyone looked toward the staircase.

Christopher grabbed a flashlight from the security desk.

“I’ll check.””

The guard stopped him.

“Sir, it’s dangerous.””

Christopher ignored him.

He walked up the stairs.

Each step echoed.

Behind him, he heard Clara whisper something.

“Christopher.””

He turned slightly.

“What?””

Her face was filled with fear.

“The person who broke into this house…”

She swallowed.

“May not be here to kill you.””

Christopher frowned.

“Then why?””

Clara looked toward the second floor.

“Because they’re looking for the one thing your father hid before he died.””

The hallway above was dark.

Christopher reached the top step.

Then he saw it.

A shadow moving near his father’s old office.

The door slowly opened.

Christopher raised the flashlight.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

He stepped closer.

Then a voice came from inside.

A voice he recognized.

A voice that made him stop breathing.

“Christopher…”

The flashlight shook in his hand.

Because standing inside his father’s office was someone he never expected to see.

May you like

His mother.

The woman who had been buried fifteen years ago.
