Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed
I drove to Rachel’s house before sunrise.
She opened the door in pajamas.
One look at my face told her.
“You found something.””
I held up Laura’s letter.
Her expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“She told me to ask you.””
Rachel went still.
“Ask me what?””
“What happened the night Laura died?””
She looked away.
And I knew.
She had been carrying something too.
“Rachel.””
She sat down slowly.
“I promised Laura.””
“Promised her what?””
“That I wouldn’t tell you unless I had to.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“I have to.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“She called me that night.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Before the accident.””
“What did she say?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
My hands started shaking.
“Why?””
Rachel swallowed.
“Because Vanessa had become obsessed with your family.””
I listened.
“Laura said Vanessa wanted your life.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She wanted your house. Your marriage. Your role as Emma’s mother figure.””
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel shook her head.
“It’s what Laura believed.””
“What else?””
Rachel hesitated.
“She said Vanessa had been manipulating people for years.””
My voice dropped.
“How?””
“She became close to women who had families.””
The room felt colder.
“She studied them.””
I thought about the files.
The notes.
The evidence.
“She collected information.””
Rachel nodded.
“Laura found out.””
“And then?””
“She confronted her.””
I looked down.
The messages.
Stay away from my daughter.
“Vanessa caused the accident?””
Rachel looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
That answer bothered me.
“Why don’t you know?””
“Because Laura never told me everything.””
“What did she tell you?””
Rachel’s voice cracked.
“She said if anything happened to her, I needed to protect you and Emma.””
I closed my eyes.
All these years.
I thought Laura’s death was just tragedy.
Now I wondered if someone had been waiting for the right moment.
I returned home that afternoon.
Vanessa was gone.
At first, I thought she had left.
Then I saw the note.
On the table.
*We need to talk. Alone.*
Underneath was an address.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But I needed answers.
The address led to an old apartment building across town.
Vanessa was waiting inside.
“You came.””
“Why did you bring me here?””
She looked around.
“This is where Laura and I used to meet.””
I stared at her.
“You knew her well.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Because Laura stole something from me.””
I felt disgusted.
“She was your friend.””
“She was supposed to help me.””
“With what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Becoming part of your family.””
The silence was terrifying.
“You wanted my life.””
“I wanted a chance.””
“You manipulated me.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“I loved you.””
I almost laughed.
“Love doesn’t hurt children.””
Her face twisted.
“You never saw me.””
I stared.
“What?””
“You saw Emma.””
There it was again.
The jealousy.
The obsession.
“You hated my daughter because she had my attention.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I hated that she had everything.””
“She had a father.””
“She had you.””
“Yes.””
She whispered:
“And I wanted that.””
I felt sick.
“You didn’t want a family.””
She looked at me.
“You wanted to replace one.””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
Then she pulled out a folder.
Again.
Another folder.
“I know what you’re going to do.””
I stared at it.
“What now?””
“This is the truth about Emma.””
My stomach tightened.
“More lies?””
“No.””
She pushed it toward me.
“This time, ask yourself why Laura never told you.””
I opened it.
The first page was a DNA test.
My hands froze.
The name at the top was Emma.
The second name was mine.
And the result was something I never expected.
May you like
Because the test said:
*Daniel was not Emma’s biological father.*
