Chapter 6: The File That Could Take My Daughter

I stood in my driveway holding the envelope like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Custody Evidence Against Daniel.

Four words.

Four words that turned my entire body cold.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I had spent the last twenty-four hours believing I was finally protecting my daughter.

Now Vanessa was standing in front of me with a file that suggested I was the danger.

She watched my face carefully.

She was waiting for fear.

Waiting for me to break.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Her arms crossed.

“You’ll find out.””

“You expect me to believe whatever you put in here?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I expect you to realize that courts don’t just listen to angry fathers.””

My jaw tightened.

“You’re threatening me.””

“I’m warning you.””

I looked at the house behind her.

The house where my daughter had hidden in corners.

The house where she ate scraps.

The house where two other children had just admitted they were afraid.

“You think this changes what happened?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I think it changes what people believe happened.””

Then she walked back inside.

Leaving me standing there.

Holding the evidence she claimed would destroy me.

I took the envelope straight to Michael’s office.

He was still there when I arrived.

The lights were dim.

His desk was covered in paperwork.

He looked up when he saw my face.

“What happened?””

I placed the envelope down.

“Vanessa has a file against me.””

Michael didn’t panic.

He didn’t react dramatically.

He simply opened it.

That scared me more.

Because it meant he had seen situations like this before.

He pulled out the first page.

Then another.

Then another.

Finally, he looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“You need to sit down.””

I hated those words.

People only said them when something was already broken.

I sat.

“What’s in there?””

Michael tapped the papers.

“Reports.””

“From who?””

“Doctors. Counselors. School records.””

My stomach dropped.

“She fabricated all this?””

He kept reading.

“I don’t know yet.””

The answer hurt.

“But the timing is suspicious.””

I leaned forward.

“What does it say?””

Michael turned the pages.

“It claims you are emotionally unstable.””

I almost laughed.

“Me?””

“It claims you have unresolved grief from losing Emma’s mother.””

I stared at him.

“That’s insane.””

“It also claims you use Emma to replace your late wife.””

My hands curled into fists.

“That’s disgusting.””

Michael looked at me.

“Is there anything in your history that could support this?””

“No.””

I paused.

Then remembered.

A moment from years ago.

A moment I hadn’t thought about in forever.

“I went to counseling after Emma’s mother died.””

Michael looked up.

“Voluntarily?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was falling apart.””

He nodded.

“That actually helps you.””

“But she’ll twist it.””

“She might try.””

I looked down.

“What else?””

Michael continued.

“She says you became obsessed with Emma’s safety.””

I swallowed.

“She was five years old.””

“She says you isolate her from other family members.””

“That’s not true.””

“She says you have anger problems.””

I looked away.

The slap.

The kitchen.

The silence afterward.

Michael noticed.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

He closed the file.

“Did you hit Vanessa?””

The question felt like a punch.

“Yes.””

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

I explained everything.

The trash.

The food.

The recordings.

Emma crying.

Vanessa ordering her to call her a liar.

When I finished, Michael was quiet.

Finally, he spoke.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“You cannot hide that.””

“I know.””

“The court will see it.””

“I know.””

“But context matters.””

I looked at the ceiling.

“I just lost control.””

Michael nodded.

“And Vanessa knows that.””

The room became silent.

“She pushed you.””

“Yes.””

“And now she’s using your reaction as proof you’re dangerous.””

My chest tightened.

It was the first time I realized the trap.

She hadn’t just been hurting Emma.

She had been collecting moments.

Waiting.

Preparing.

That night, I went to Rachel’s house.

Emma was asleep on the couch.

Her tiny hand was wrapped around a stuffed rabbit.

I sat beside her.

Watching her breathe.

A few weeks ago, I would have thought this was normal.

A father watching his daughter sleep.

Now I wondered how many nights she had fallen asleep afraid.

Rachel came into the room quietly.

“She finally stopped crying.””

I looked at her.

“She cried?””

Rachel nodded.

“After you left yesterday.””

My heart sank.

“What did she say?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She asked if Vanessa was going to make you leave too.””

I closed my eyes.

A child should not know that kind of fear.

“She thinks everyone leaves.””

Rachel sat beside me.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“You need to stop blaming yourself long enough to fight.””

I looked at Emma.

“I should have seen it.””

“You weren’t there.””

“I should have known.””

“People who hurt others are usually good at hiding it.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew she was right.

The next morning, Michael called.

“Daniel, I found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“I looked into the reports Vanessa submitted.””

“And?””

“They’re not fake.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

“They’re real documents.””

I stood.

“Then she was telling the truth?””

“No.””

He paused.

“They’re real documents that were altered.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

“Some pages were removed.””

My throat went dry.

“Removed?””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

Michael was quiet.

Then he said:

“About Emma’s mother.””

My entire body went still.

“What does my late wife have to do with this?””

“I don’t know yet.””

A pause.

“But someone edited these files after her death.””

I stared out the window.

“Who?””

Michael’s voice lowered.

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””

Then my phone buzzed.

A text message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

May you like

One sentence that made my blood run cold.

*Daniel, Vanessa isn’t the only person who wanted Emma gone.*
