Chapter 5: The Other Child Who Spoke

I stared at the photo until my eyes burned.

Emma.

Sleeping.

In her own room.

Someone had taken that picture while she was vulnerable.

Someone had been watching.

My first thought was Vanessa.

My second thought was Tyler and Madison.

I drove back to the house.

Vanessa opened the door before I knocked.

She looked annoyed.

Then she saw my face.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

“Who sent this?””

Her expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

I stepped inside.

“Where are Tyler and Madison?””

“They’re upstairs.””

“Call them down.””

“Why?””

“Because I asked.””

A few minutes later, they appeared.

Tyler looked uncomfortable.

Madison looked scared.

That caught my attention.

“Who took this picture?””

Nobody answered.

“Madison?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then away.

“Sweetheart,” Vanessa said softly.

“Don’t say something you’ll regret.””

My heart sank.

There it was again.

The warning.

The fear.

I stepped closer.

“Madison.””

The twelve-year-old girl whispered:

“It was me.””

Vanessa froze.

“Madison.””

“I’m sorry.””

“Go upstairs.””

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

Madison wiped her eyes.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Because Emma isn’t lying.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s face turned white.

Tyler looked at the floor.

I felt like the ground had shifted.

“What do you mean?””

Madison swallowed.

“She did things to us too.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don’t start.””

“You made me say Emma was bad.””

“Madison.””

“You made me hide her toys.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“Enough.””

Madison flinched.

And I saw it.

The same fear Emma had.

Different child.

Same fear.

I looked at Tyler.

“And you?””

He was fifteen.

Old enough to understand.

Old enough to know something was wrong.

He nodded slowly.

“She always said Emma was the reason Dad left.””

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

“That’s not true.””

Tyler looked at her.

“You said it all the time.””

I felt sick.

This wasn’t about Emma.

Emma was just the smallest person Vanessa had decided she could control.

I stepped outside and called my attorney.

But before I could finish the call, Vanessa followed me.

Her voice was low.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I turned.

“No.””

“You think those kids will thank you?””

“They’re children.””

“So is Emma.””

The words hung between us.

For the first time, Vanessa looked like she understood what she had done.

But then her expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

“You really want to know why I kept records?””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She smiled slightly.

“Because I knew one day you would come after me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What records?””

She stepped closer.

“Everything.””

A chill moved through me.

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“Every time Emma cried. Every time she acted out. Every time you chose her over me.””

“That’s not proof of anything.””

“No.””

She smiled.

“But the other file is.””

I froze.

“What other file?””

Vanessa reached into her purse.

Pulled out a sealed envelope.

And handed it to me.

“My lawyer has copies too.””

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

May you like

Underneath it were four words that made my blood run cold.

*Custody Evidence Against Daniel.*
