Chapter 7: The Truth About Emma’s Mother

I read the message again.

And again.

Vanessa isn’t the only person who wanted Emma gone.

The words burned into my mind.

My first instinct was anger.

Someone was playing games.

Someone was trying to scare me.

But then I remembered the altered documents.

The missing pages.

The references to Emma’s mother.

Someone had been hiding something for years.

I called Michael immediately.

“Did you send anyone to investigate Vanessa?””

“No.””

“Then someone else knows.””

There was silence.

“Send me the message.””

I did.

A few minutes later, he called back.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“We need to talk in person.””

I met Michael at a coffee shop near his office.

He looked exhausted.

That worried me.

He slid a folder across the table.

“I found the original report.””

I opened it.

The first page looked the same.

Emma’s name.

Her age.

The date.

Then I saw the missing section.

My hands shook.

It was a statement from a counselor.

About Emma’s mother.

About our marriage.

About the months before she died.

I read slowly.

Then I stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“Read the next page.””

I did.

The counselor had written:

“Daniel appears deeply protective of Emma. However, there are concerns regarding another family member’s resentment toward the child.””

My breathing changed.

“Another family member?””

Michael nodded.

“The original report mentions someone close to the family expressing frustration about Emma receiving attention.””

I turned the page.

The name was missing.

But underneath was a note.

“Follow-up interview recommended.””

I looked at Michael.

“Who removed this?””

“We don’t know.””

I closed my eyes.

Then something clicked.

Vanessa.

She had entered our lives shortly after Emma’s mother died.

She knew everything.

The grief.

The weakness.

The guilt.

She knew exactly where to attack.

But why?

Why hate a child?

That evening, I asked Tyler and Madison to meet me.

Not Vanessa.

Just them.

They sat across from me at Rachel’s kitchen table.

Two children carrying secrets.

“Why didn’t you tell me before?””

Tyler stared at his hands.

“Because she said you wouldn’t believe us.””

My heart hurt.

“Why would you think that?””

“Because she showed us things.””

“What things?””

Madison spoke quietly.

“Pictures.””

I looked at her.

“What pictures?””

“Pictures of Emma crying.””

My stomach tightened.

“She said Emma was unstable.””

Tyler nodded.

“She said Emma ruined your life.””

I looked at them.

“And you believed her?””

Madison shook her head.

“At first.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why?””

“Because she acted like she was helping.””

Tyler looked up.

“She would say things when you weren’t home.””

“What kind of things?””

He swallowed.

“She said you only loved Emma because you felt guilty.””

I felt sick.

Vanessa hadn’t just hurt Emma.

She had built a story around her.

A story where my daughter was the problem.

“Did she ever hurt you?””

Neither answered.

That was answer enough.

Later that night, I received another message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

An old photo.

My wife, Laura.

Emma’s mother.

Standing beside Vanessa.

I froze.

Because I had never seen it before.

I zoomed in.

They were at a hospital.

Laura was pregnant.

And Vanessa was holding her hand.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Vanessa had known Laura.

Before she knew me.

I called Michael.

“I found something.””

He answered immediately.

“What?””

“Vanessa knew my wife.””

Silence.

Then:

“Daniel, are you sure?””

I sent the photo.

A minute later, he called back.

“This changes everything.””

“How?””

“Because Vanessa didn’t enter your life by accident.””

I stared at the picture.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying you need to find out how she met Laura.””

My heart started racing.

Because suddenly, the question wasn’t why Vanessa hated Emma.

The question was:

Why did Vanessa come into our lives at all?

The next morning, I went through old boxes in the attic.

Things I hadn’t touched since Laura died.

Photos.

Letters.

Medical records.

Memories.

I found an old phone.

Laura’s old phone.

I had kept it because I couldn’t throw anything away.

I charged it.

Hours later, it turned on.

There were messages.

Hundreds.

Most were ordinary.

Then I saw one name.

Vanessa.

My hands froze.

The first message was dated three months before Laura died.

I opened it.

And read:

*“Laura, you can’t keep protecting him from the truth.””*

My heart stopped.

The next message said:

*“Emma deserves to know what happened.””*

I stared at the screen.

What happened?

Then another message appeared.

From Laura.

A reply I had never seen.

*“Please stay away from my daughter.””*

My entire body went cold.

Because Vanessa wasn’t a stranger.

She wasn’t just my wife’s friend.

She had been part of a secret.

A secret Laura was trying to protect Emma from.

And the final message from Vanessa was only six words.

*“Then I’ll make Daniel choose.””*
