Amused

Chapter 9: The Woman Who Returned

Ethan stood completely still.

The phone was silent.

But the words remained.

I’m the reason your mother died.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

Finally, Ethan turned toward Richard.

“My aunt?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Her name was Claire.””

“And she’s alive?””

Richard looked away.

“Yes.””

The answer broke something inside Ethan.

Another secret.

Another person hidden from him.

“How many people have been lying to me?””

His voice wasn’t angry anymore.

It was exhausted.

Richard looked at him.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

Richard had no answer.

Ethan laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

Sophia stepped closer.

“Ethan…”

He turned toward her.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You knew about Claire.””

Sophia shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“But you knew she existed.””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me.””

Sophia looked down.

“I was trying to find out the truth.””

“By destroying my family?””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought your father was responsible.””

“But you weren’t sure.””

Silence.

That was enough.

Ethan looked away.

Then Daniel spoke.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Claire wasn’t just your mother’s sister.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“She was the person your mother trusted most.””

Ethan frowned.

“Then why would she hurt her?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Because the answer was worse than expected.

Richard finally spoke.

“Because Claire believed Margaret betrayed her.””

Ethan stared.

“Betrayed her how?””

Richard walked toward the window.

“Your mother discovered Claire had been helping your grandfather move company money.””

Ethan froze.

“So Claire was the one?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was involved.””

Sophia looked shocked.

“But why?””

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Because she believed the Whitmore family belonged to her.””

Ethan remembered the message.

The documents.

The dead signature.

Everything connected.

“She forged my mother’s name.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“After she died?””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at the front door.

“We need to find Lily.””

Richard stepped forward.

“I know where she might be.””

Everyone turned.

Ethan stared.

“You know?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“There was an old Whitmore storage facility.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“That’s where she would go.””

“You think she kept Lily there?””

“I think she kept everything there.””

They drove through the storm.

No one spoke.

Ethan sat in the passenger seat.

Richard drove.

For the first time in years, father and son sat beside each other without anger.

Only fear.

“I’m sorry,” Richard said quietly.

Ethan looked out the window.

“For what?””

“For every time I chose protecting the family name over protecting you.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know if forgiveness was possible.

But he heard the apology.

And that mattered.

When they reached the old storage facility, the building looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rusting doors.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except someone.

They entered carefully.

The inside smelled like dust and old paper.

Then they heard something.

A child crying.

Ethan ran.

“Lily!””

He found her sitting beside a stack of boxes.

Untouched.

Safe.

But she wasn’t alone.

A woman stood behind her.

Older.

Elegant.

Cold.

Claire.

Ethan stopped.

The woman smiled.

“Hello, nephew.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Let my daughter go.””

Claire looked amused.

“You sound just like your mother.””

“My mother hated you.””

The smile disappeared.

“She misunderstood me.””

Richard entered behind Ethan.

“Claire.””

She turned.

“Richard.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You still look exactly the same.””

“And you still destroy everything you touch.””

Claire laughed.

“You always thought you were the hero.””

Daniel appeared behind them.

Claire’s expression changed.

“You.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Claire looked at all three men.

Then smiled.

“You finally figured it out.””

Ethan tightened his fists.

“Figured what out?””

Claire looked directly at him.

“That your father wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

She walked toward a table.

On it were dozens of documents.

Photos.

Records.

Evidence.

Then she placed one final paper down.

Ethan saw the name.

His own.

“What is that?””

Claire smiled.

“The document your mother was trying to hide.””

Ethan picked it up.

His face changed.

Because it wasn’t a financial record.

It wasn’t a company document.

It was a birth certificate.

And the name listed as his biological father…

Was not Richard Whitmore.
