Amused

Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Tears

The room became colder.

Ethan stared at the security monitor, unable to process what he was seeing.

His wife.

The woman he had defended moments earlier.

The woman whose tears had filled the room.

Was standing in the recording with a completely different expression.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost amused.

“Stop the video.””

Ethan’s voice was barely above a whisper.

Nobody moved.

Sophia stood frozen behind him.

Richard watched his son carefully.

For the first time that night, Ethan wasn’t looking at his father with anger.

He was looking at him with fear.

“Ethan,” Sophia said softly.

He didn’t turn around.

“Don’t.””

One word.

But it carried more pain than rage.

The video continued.

On the screen, Sophia walked through the hallway.

She glanced toward the staircase.

Then she checked her phone.

A few seconds later, she sent a message.

Ethan leaned closer.

“What is she doing?””

Richard remained silent.

The security footage wasn’t perfect.

The camera couldn’t capture the phone screen clearly.

But it showed enough.

Sophia wasn’t afraid.

She was waiting.

Then Richard appeared on the recording.

He walked downstairs carrying his briefcase.

Sophia immediately changed.

Her shoulders dropped.

Her expression shifted.

And within seconds, she began crying.

The Ethan watching the footage felt like someone had punched him.

“No…”

Sophia stepped forward.

“Ethan, please let me explain.””

He turned.

“Explain what?””

His voice cracked.

“Explain why you were smiling before you accused my father?””

Sophia’s face became pale.

“That’s not what happened.””

Richard gave a bitter laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because he finally understood.

“She thought you would never question her.””

Sophia looked at him.

“You don’t know anything.””

Richard stared back.

“Maybe I know more than you think.””

Ethan looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was broken by a small voice from the hallway.

“Dad?””

Everyone turned.

Ethan’s eight-year-old daughter, Lily, stood there holding her stuffed rabbit.

She had been watching everything.

Ethan immediately rushed toward her.

“Lily, sweetheart, why are you awake?””

The little girl looked scared.

“I heard shouting.””

Sophia quickly wiped her tears.

“Lily, go back upstairs.””

But Lily didn’t move.

She looked at Richard.

Then at Sophia.

Then she said something that made everyone freeze.

“Grandpa didn’t hurt Mommy.””

Sophia’s face changed.

“What?””

Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.

“Grandpa didn’t hurt Mommy.””

Ethan slowly crouched down.

“Lily, honey, what do you mean?””

The child looked toward the stairs.

“I saw Mommy go upstairs.””

Sophia immediately interrupted.

“Lily, you’re confused.””

But Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Her small voice trembled.

“You told me to stay in my room because you had a surprise for Daddy.””

Ethan looked up.

A cold feeling moved through his chest.

“What surprise?””

Sophia stared at Lily.

Not with sadness.

With anger.

“Lily.””

The little girl flinched.

Richard noticed.

So did Ethan.

Because a mother’s voice should never make her child look afraid.

“Don’t scare her,” Ethan said.

Sophia looked back at him.

“I’m not scaring her.””

“You just did.””

The words hung between them.

Sophia’s expression hardened.

For the first time, Ethan saw a side of her he had never seen before.

The gentle wife.

The caring mother.

The woman everyone trusted.

Was disappearing.

Sophia folded her arms.

“So now you believe your father?””

Ethan looked at the screen.

Then at Richard.

Then at his daughter.

“I believe what I can see.””

Sophia laughed quietly.

A cold, humorless sound.

“You think one video changes everything?””

Richard stepped forward.

“It changes enough.””

Sophia looked at him.

“You really think you’re innocent?””

Richard frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

For a moment, Sophia seemed ready to reveal something.

Something she had been holding onto.

Then she stopped.

She smiled.

And Ethan noticed.

She wasn’t scared anymore.

She was confident again.

“You want the truth?”” Sophia asked.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Sophia reached into her purse.

She pulled out her phone.

Then placed it on the table.

“I have proof too.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“What proof?””

Sophia looked directly at Ethan.

“Proof that your father has been lying to you for years.””

Ethan stared at the phone.

The room went silent.

Because despite everything he had just seen…

A small part of him still wondered.

What if there was something he didn’t know?

Sophia unlocked the phone.

She opened a hidden folder.

Then turned the screen toward Ethan.

His face changed.

Because the first picture wasn’t of Richard.

It was of Ethan himself.

And beneath the photo was a message:

*“He still doesn’t know what his father did.””*

Ethan slowly looked up.

“Who sent this?””

Sophia smiled faintly.

Then she whispered a name.

A name Richard hadn’t heard in twenty years.

May you like

And the moment it left her mouth, Richard’s entire body went still.

Because that person was supposed to be dead.
