Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The phone remained on the table.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody breathed.
Ethan stared at the device as if it had become something dangerous.
Because the voice coming from it belonged to a man who shouldn’t exist.
Richard slowly stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“So you remember me.””
Richard’s face tightened.
“I thought you were gone.””
“I was.””
The voice paused.
“For twenty years.””
Ethan looked at his father.
“Dad…”
Richard didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because the impossible had just happened.
His dead brother was speaking.
Sophia picked up the phone and smiled.
“You should hear this.””
Richard looked at her.
“You knew he was alive.””
“Yes.””
“And you brought him here.””
“I brought the truth here.””
Ethan looked at Sophia.
“Where is he?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, Daniel spoke.
“I’m not far.””
The lights flickered.
Everyone looked toward the windows.
Rain poured against the glass.
A car engine could be heard outside.
Richard’s face changed.
“No.””
Ethan noticed.
“What?””
Richard looked toward the front door.
“He’s here.””
A knock echoed through the house.
Three slow knocks.
Nobody moved.
Then another three.
Sophia walked toward the door.
Ethan grabbed her arm.
“Wait.””
She looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because this is insane.””
Sophia pulled away.
“No.””
Her voice was cold.
“What’s insane is that you still protect the people who hurt you.””
Richard looked at her.
“You don’t know what happened.””
She opened the door.
The man standing outside looked nothing like Ethan imagined.
He wasn’t a monster.
He wasn’t angry.
He was just old.
Older than Richard.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But his eyes were familiar.
Richard stared at him.
“Daniel.””
The man smiled sadly.
“Hello, Richard.””
Ethan felt his entire world shifting.
He looked at the two brothers.
They had the same eyes.
The same expression when they were hurt.
The same quiet sadness.
Daniel stepped inside.
His gaze moved toward Ethan.
“So this is my nephew.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“You’re really Daniel?””
The older man nodded.
“Yes.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Ethan, don’t listen to him.””
Daniel looked at his brother.
“Still controlling the story?””
Richard’s voice sharpened.
“Still pretending you’re innocent?””
The tension between them was immediate.
Twenty years of hatred filled the room.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“What happened?””
Daniel glanced at Sophia.
“She didn’t tell you?””
Ethan shook his head.
“Tell me.””
Daniel sighed.
“Your father betrayed me.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
Daniel continued.
“He took everything.””
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Did you?””
Richard’s silence returned.
That silence was becoming unbearable.
Finally, Richard spoke.
“I took control of the company.””
Daniel smiled.
“Exactly.””
“Because you nearly destroyed it.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You always say that.””
“Because it’s true.””
Sophia interrupted.
“Ethan, don’t let him manipulate you.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You’re the one who brought him here.””
Sophia became quiet.
That was the first time Ethan saw uncertainty on her face.
Daniel noticed too.
Interesting.
“So she didn’t tell you everything either.””
Ethan turned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Sophia.
“You promised me you would tell him.””
Sophia’s expression hardened.
“I said I would handle it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“This isn’t about handling.””
His eyes moved back to Ethan.
“It’s about revenge.””
The word hung in the air.
Ethan looked at Sophia.
“Revenge?””
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“You used me.””
Sophia’s face softened slightly.
“No.””
“You married me because of my father.””
“No.””
“Because of my family.””
She looked away.
Ethan felt something break.
Then Daniel said something that made everyone turn.
“She didn’t marry you because of me.””
Sophia looked at him.
“Daniel.””
But he continued.
“She married you because of your mother.””
Richard froze.
Ethan looked confused.
“My mother?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother knew the truth.””
The room became silent.
Ethan’s mother had died when he was young.
He barely remembered her.
“What truth?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
A painful expression crossed his face.
“Your father didn’t just destroy me.””
Richard whispered.
“Stop.””
“He destroyed the person who tried to expose him.””
Ethan’s heart raced.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old envelope.
“I kept this for twenty years.””
Richard’s expression changed instantly.
“No.””
Ethan noticed.
His father wasn’t angry.
He was afraid.
Daniel placed the envelope on the table.
“This belonged to your mother.””
Ethan slowly reached for it.
His fingers touched the paper.
Then Daniel said:
“Before she died, she wrote down everything she discovered about your father.””
Ethan opened his mouth.
But no words came.
Because suddenly the accusation against Richard was no longer about Daniel.
It was about Ethan’s mother.
The woman who had loved Richard.
The woman who had died believing she was safe.
Ethan opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
Only one sentence was visible.
His hands began shaking.
May you like
Because it started with:
*“Ethan, if you are reading this, it means your father failed to hide the truth…”*
