Chapter 4: The Name Buried Twenty Years Ago

The name echoed through the room like a gunshot.

“Daniel.””

Richard felt all the strength leave his body.

For a moment, he didn’t hear anything else.

Not Ethan’s confused voice.

Not Sophia’s breathing.

Not the rain tapping against the windows.

Only one name.

Daniel.

Ethan looked between them.

“Who is Daniel?””

Nobody answered.

Richard slowly lowered himself into the nearest chair.

His hand moved toward his chest.

Not because he was weak.

Because suddenly he felt twenty years of memories crashing back into him.

Sophia watched him carefully.

She noticed.

And that was when Ethan realized something.

His wife had not said the name randomly.

She had been waiting for this reaction.

“You know him,” Ethan whispered.

Richard looked up.

His eyes were filled with pain.

“Yes.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Who is he?””

Richard looked at Sophia.

“You told him?””

Sophia smiled slightly.

“I told him enough.””

Ethan turned sharply.

“Enough for what?””

Sophia walked toward the table and picked up her phone.

“For him to finally ask questions.””

Richard stared at her.

“You planned this.””

Sophia tilted her head.

“I planned for the truth to come out.””

“No,” Richard said.

“You planned for Ethan to hate me.””

The room became silent.

Because Ethan heard the certainty in his father’s voice.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Certainty.

Sophia crossed her arms.

“Maybe he should.””

Richard looked at his son.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

But Ethan stepped back.

Every emotion was fighting inside him.

Anger.

Confusion.

Betrayal.

He didn’t know who to believe anymore.

“You both keep saying there’s a truth,” Ethan said.

“But nobody is actually telling me anything.””

Richard looked down.

The old man who had always seemed impossible to break suddenly looked tired.

“Daniel Whitmore was my younger brother.””

Ethan froze.

“My uncle?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“But I never heard of him.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Because I never wanted you to.””

Sophia immediately stepped forward.

“Because Richard erased him.””

Ethan looked at his father.

“Is that true?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

And that hesitation hurt Ethan more than any confession.

“Dad?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“When you were born, Daniel was supposed to inherit the company.””

Ethan frowned.

“What company?””

“The Whitmore Group.””

The words landed heavily.

Ethan had grown up knowing his family was wealthy, but Richard had always kept him away from business.

He told him money created enemies.

He told him family mattered more.

Richard continued.

“Your grandfather built everything. But Daniel was reckless. He made dangerous decisions.””

Sophia laughed softly.

“Or maybe he challenged Richard.””

Richard ignored her.

“One night, Daniel caused a financial disaster. Millions were lost.””

Ethan looked at Sophia.

“And you know this because?””

Sophia’s eyes narrowed.

“Because Daniel was my father.””

Silence.

Ethan stared at her.

“What?””

Richard’s face changed.

He already knew.

He had known from the beginning.

“You married my son.””

Sophia smiled.

“Yes.””

Ethan stepped away.

His voice became quieter.

“My wife is Daniel Whitmore’s daughter?””

Richard nodded slowly.

Ethan looked at Sophia.

“You knew who my family was before we met.””

“Yes.””

The answer came too quickly.

No hesitation.

No apology.

Ethan felt his stomach twist.

“How long?””

Sophia looked away.

“What?””

“How long did you know?””

She remained silent.

Ethan’s voice rose.

“How long did you know I was Richard Whitmore’s son?””

Sophia finally looked back at him.

“From the beginning.””

The words destroyed something inside him.

Richard watched his son absorb the betrayal.

But then Sophia said something unexpected.

“I didn’t marry you for money.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I married you because I loved you.””

“Then why hide this?””

Sophia’s expression changed.

Because that was the question she didn’t want.

Richard saw it.

And for the first time, he understood something.

Sophia’s plan wasn’t just revenge.

It was personal.

“Tell him the rest,” Richard said.

Sophia looked at him.

“Be quiet.””

“No.””

Richard stood.

“You wanted the truth.””

His voice became stronger.

“So tell him everything.””

Sophia’s eyes became cold.

“You really want that?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“Fine.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Your father destroyed my family.””

Ethan turned toward Richard.

Richard said nothing.

Sophia continued.

“My father lost everything because of him.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“That’s not what happened.””

Sophia pointed at him.

“You ruined him.””

Richard’s voice became low.

“Daniel ruined himself.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Stop.””

Both went silent.

“I need facts.””

He looked at Sophia.

“Not accusations.””

Then he looked at Richard.

“Not secrets.””

Ethan walked toward the table.

“Show me.””

Sophia raised an eyebrow.

“Show you what?””

“The proof.””

She smiled.

“I knew you would ask.””

She opened her phone again.

Then placed several documents on the screen.

Old newspaper articles.

Financial records.

A photograph of Richard standing outside a courthouse.

Ethan stared.

“Dad…”

Richard looked at the image.

His face became pale.

Because he recognized it.

But something was wrong.

The photograph was real.

The story attached to it was not.

“This is edited,” Richard whispered.

Sophia laughed.

“You always say that.””

Richard looked at her.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Sophia leaned closer.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

Then her phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Sophia smiled.

“Speak of the devil.””

She answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through the speaker.

A man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

Richard froze.

Because he knew that voice.

The phone was on speaker.

“Did he finally tell Ethan about me?””

Richard’s hand trembled.

Ethan looked at him.

“Dad?””

The voice continued.

“Because after twenty years, I think it’s time your son knew what you did.””

Richard whispered one word.

“No.””

May you like

Sophia looked satisfied.

“Welcome back, Daniel.””
