Chapter 9: The Doctor Who Buried the Truth

Dr. Thomas Vale had died eight years earlier.

Rebecca found his obituary in a medical journal archived online. He had been a respected obstetrician, a generous donor to several hospitals, and a longtime friend of Richard Caldwell.

His funeral had been attended by hundreds.

Among the mourners were Richard and Margaret Caldwell.

Ethan stared at the photograph accompanying the obituary.

The doctor had white hair, a narrow face, and deep-set eyes. He looked nothing like Thomas Caldwell.

But he was standing beside a young woman in the photograph.

Susan Vale.

Ethan pointed at the image.

"That's Lily's mother.""

Rebecca nodded.

"And the man beside her is her father.""

Daniel sat on the edge of the desk, wincing as he shifted his injured arm.

"If Dr. Vale was Susan's father, why would Richard need him to conceal Thomas's paternity?""

Rebecca enlarged the photograph.

"Because Dr. Vale may have known who Thomas's biological father was.""

Ethan looked at the torn letter.

"Then we need his records.""

"His personal papers were donated to a university archive after his death," Rebecca said.

"But if the missing document was important enough for someone to tear it apart, we should assume someone else has already searched for it.""

Daniel stood.

"Then we go to the archive.""

Rebecca checked the time.

"It's nearly two in the morning. The archive won't open until nine.""

Ethan looked at the laptop.

Thomas had given them until sunrise.

They didn't have until nine.

He called Victor.

Victor answered on the first ring.

"Where are you?""

"Albany. We found Thomas's apartment.""

"Did you find Lily?""

"No. We found a video. Thomas is holding her somewhere else.""

Victor swore.

"What does he want?""

"The original records proving who his father was.""

There was a pause.

Then Victor said, "Ethan, I found something at the hotel.""

"What?""

"The man who left the wedding hall. Daniel Mercer. I traced him to a parking garage near Grand Central. He left his car there and got into a taxi.""

"Can you find the taxi?""

"Already did. It took him to a private medical clinic on the Upper East Side.""

Ethan frowned.

"Why would Daniel Mercer go to a clinic?""

"I don't know. But the clinic was owned by Dr. Thomas Vale before his death. It's still operating under a different name.""

Rebecca turned toward him.

"Does the clinic have archived patient records?""

Victor answered through the speaker.

"Possibly. I called a friend who works in medical compliance. She says the building was sold to a private foundation, but the original records may still be stored in the basement.""

Ethan looked at Rebecca.

"Can you get us access?""

She shook her head.

"Not legally without authorization.""

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

"Of course.""

Victor's voice sharpened.

"Don't even think about breaking in. If Thomas is trying to lure you somewhere, he may have people watching that clinic.""

Ethan stared at the dark screen.

Then an idea occurred to him.

"Victor, can you contact Daniel Mercer?""

"I can try.""

"Tell him we need to know what he found.""

Victor hesitated.

"Ethan, there's something else. I pulled the wedding footage from every camera in the ballroom. Before the ceremony, Daniel Mercer spoke to someone in the kitchen corridor.""

"Who?""

"I couldn't identify the person. They were wearing a catering uniform, and their face was hidden by a cap. But I found the audio.""

Victor sent a file.

Ethan played it.

The recording was muffled, but two voices could be heard.

Daniel Mercer's voice came first.

"Did you bring it?""

A second voice answered.

"Yes.""

"Then you know what happens if Thomas gets it.""

"I know.""

A pause.

Then Daniel said, "If Ethan sees this before he knows the truth, everything falls apart.""

The second voice replied, "Perhaps it should.""

The recording ended.

Ethan replayed it.

"Who was the second person?""

Victor said, "I don't know. But there's a clear image of their hand.""

He sent a still frame.

The person wore a gold ring shaped like a small crescent moon.

Ethan stared at the screen.

He had seen that ring before.

Margaret wore one on her right hand.

He called her immediately.

She answered after several rings.

"Ethan?""

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Did you go to the wedding with a gold crescent ring?""

Silence.

"Mother?""

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Victor found footage of someone meeting Daniel Mercer before the ceremony. They were wearing your ring.""

Margaret exhaled sharply.

"I gave that ring away years ago.""

"To whom?""

She didn't answer.

Ethan's voice hardened.

"To whom?""

"To Lily.""

He closed his eyes.

"Why?""

"Because it belonged to Susan.""

The words fell like stones.

Ethan sat down.

"You knew Susan?""

"Yes.""

"How well?""

Margaret's voice broke.

"She was my closest friend before she became Richard's lover.""

Ethan stared at the phone.

"You were friends?""

"Before everything happened.""

"Then why did you take her daughter?""

Margaret began to cry.

"Because she asked me to.""

Ethan froze.

"What?""

"Susan knew she was dying. She had a heart condition that had gone undiagnosed for years. She was terrified that Richard would take Lily and raise her in secrecy, just as he had done with the other children.""

Ethan gripped the edge of the desk.

"So she gave Lily to you?""

"She asked me to protect her. She wanted Lily to have a home, a name, and a future.""

"Then why did you hide the truth?""

"Because Richard insisted that the adoption be kept secret until Lily was old enough to understand. He said he would tell her himself.""

"And he never did.""

"No.""

Margaret's voice trembled.

"He died before he could.""

Ethan felt a bitter anger rising in his chest.

"Then why did you lie to me? Why did you let me believe you had never wanted another child?""

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Of what?""

"Of how much I loved her.""

The answer silenced him.

Margaret continued.

"I had spent years trying to give Richard the family he wanted. I couldn't have another child, and every time he looked at you, I wondered whether you were enough for him. When Susan asked me to take Lily, I thought it was a gift. A chance to be a mother again.""

Her breathing became uneven.

"But Richard made me promise never to tell anyone. He said the truth would destroy the family. I believed him.""

Ethan looked toward Daniel.

Daniel had been listening in silence.

"Does Lily know?"" Ethan asked.

Margaret whispered, "She found out six months ago.""

"And Thomas took her because he wants the records.""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell us any of this?""

"Because Thomas told me he would hurt her if I did.""

Ethan closed his eyes.

For years, Margaret had presented herself as a woman who valued family above everything.

Now he understood that she had confused secrecy with protection until she could no longer distinguish the two.

"Mother," he said quietly, "where is the missing half of Richard's letter?""

Margaret was silent.

Then she whispered, "In the place where he kept the things he feared most.""

"Where?""

"The family mausoleum.""

Ethan stood.

"Why would it be there?""

"Because Richard believed no one would search among the dead.""

The call ended.

Rebecca was already gathering her things.

"The mausoleum is in the family cemetery outside Albany. We can be there in forty minutes.""

Daniel moved toward the door.

"Then let's go.""

The Caldwell mausoleum stood on a hill overlooking a small cemetery, its stone columns silver beneath the moonlight.

A security light flickered above the entrance.

Ethan had visited the place only twice. The first time had been when his grandfather died. The second had been when Richard was buried.

He had never noticed the small metal cabinet recessed into the wall beside the main crypt.

Rebecca examined it.

"Do you have a key?""

Ethan shook his head.

Daniel reached into his pocket and produced a small brass key.

Everyone stared at him.

"Where did you get that?""

"From my adoptive father's belongings. He said it had been given to him by a man who claimed to be my grandfather.""

He inserted the key.

The cabinet opened.

Inside lay a small leather box.

Ethan lifted the lid.

There were photographs, letters, and a folded sheet of paper.

He opened the paper.

It was the missing half of Richard's letter.

The truth about Thomas's father must never be revealed. If the boy learns that Arthur survived, he will destroy everything I have built.

Ethan read the sentence twice.

Arthur.

Thomas's biological father was Arthur.

The man Richard had erased from the family.

The man Margaret had helped conceal.

Daniel looked stunned.

"Thomas is Arthur's son?""

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"That explains why Richard raised him as his own. He was trying to keep Arthur's existence buried while controlling the child who could expose him.""

Ethan stared at the letter.

His father had taken his brother's life, concealed his children, and manipulated Margaret into helping him preserve the family name.

But there was another line at the bottom.

Margaret must never know that Thomas was conceived before Arthur's disappearance. If she discovers the truth, she will realize that the child she has raised is not the son she believes him to be.

Ethan frowned.

"That doesn't make sense. Margaret knew Thomas wasn't Richard's biological son.""

Rebecca read the passage again.

"Perhaps she didn't know who his father was.""

Daniel looked toward the mausoleum entrance.

"Then why would Thomas believe Margaret was his mother?""

Ethan slowly lowered the letter.

"Because she was.""

A sound came from outside.

Gravel crunching beneath footsteps.

Rebecca turned off her flashlight.

Someone was approaching the mausoleum.

A man's voice called through the darkness.

"Ethan Caldwell.""

Thomas.

Ethan stepped toward the entrance.

"Thomas, we found the letter.""

"Then you know the truth.""

"Yes.""

"Good. Now bring it outside.""

Ethan held the paper tightly.

"Where's Lily?""

"Safe.""

"Prove it.""

A phone appeared in the doorway.

Thomas held it up.

The screen showed Lily sitting in a room, her hands no longer bound. She looked frightened but unharmed.

Ethan exhaled.

"Let her go.""

"Give me the letter.""

Ethan hesitated.

Thomas's expression darkened.

"You have no idea what that letter means.""

"I know you're Arthur's son.""

Thomas went still.

For the first time, the anger drained from his face.

Then he laughed.

A low, disbelieving sound.

"That's what he told you?""

"It's what the letter says.""

Thomas looked toward the cemetery.

"Arthur is a liar.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

Thomas stepped into the light.

His eyes were wet.

"Arthur isn't my father.""

Ethan stared at him.

Thomas raised his chin.

"My father is Richard Caldwell.""

Rebecca looked stunned.

"That's impossible. The DNA report—"

"Was falsified.""

Thomas pulled a second document from his coat.

A genetic test bearing the name of a private laboratory.

The result showed a direct paternal relationship between Thomas and Richard.

Ethan felt the ground shift beneath him.

Thomas held out his hand.

"Give me the letter.""

Ethan looked from the document to Thomas.

Then he understood.

Someone had been lying about the truth for so long that even the evidence had become another weapon.

"Thomas," he said carefully, "who gave you that DNA report?""

Thomas's face changed.

A moment of fear crossed his eyes.

Then a gunshot rang out from beyond the cemetery wall.

Thomas dropped to one knee.

Blood spread across his jacket.

Ethan rushed toward him.

But Thomas grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.

"Don't let them take Lily," he whispered.

His eyes flicked toward the trees.

A figure stood between the graves, holding a rifle.

Then the figure stepped into the light.

It was Margaret.

She lowered the weapon.

And in a voice barely louder than a whisper, she said, "I'm sorry, Thomas.""

Thomas stared at her in disbelief.

"Mother?""

Margaret began to cry.

"I told you never to trust the man who signed your father's death certificate.""

She looked at Ethan.

Then at the letter in his hand.

"Because Dr. Vale didn't just falsify Richard's records.""

Her voice broke.

"He falsified his death.""

Thomas's eyes widened.

And from somewhere beyond the cemetery gates, a car engine roared to life.

Someone was escaping.

May you like

Someone who had been dead for eleven years.

Someone who knew exactly where Lily was.
